Has anyone tried the leaked 2.2 ROM along with the OTA to see if it fixes the random rebooting? I am preparing my phone for the update right now. I'll report back if it helps or not in a few days.
i was posting in this forum a month ago or so. My phone was not only rebooting, but just plain ol shutting off, requiring a battery pull to get it running again.
Since then I have received a replacement device and have not had the problem.
I dont know who does the replacements at verizon, but i never send back my defective phone, and they never charge my account for it. I think its because i activate the new one online, and not through their replacement activation screen. At any rate, this has allowed me to troubleshoot this problem to death.
I installed the2010 08 02 skyfire 2.2 rom, with the updated radio stack (2.05) on the problem phone. It took about 2 hours but eventually I got a complete powerdown requiring a battery pull to turn back on.
Before the 2.2 update, I tried removing the SD card, getting a new SD card, complete factory reset, leaving the phone in airplane mode.. in every situation the phone at some point would shut off and require a battery pull to power back on.
I have disassembled the phone to look for possible cold soldier joints or cracks in the boards and found none (I am an EE and have a lot of equipment at my disposal to do just that)
I am ruling out software as the problem as I have replaced all the software. I have not yet upgraded HBoot to the new version, Im not sure how that would cause shutdowns, but who knows at this point.
I have been with Verizon for just over 10 years now. Here some valuable information that some of you will probably shy away from due to the morality of it.
Verizon will always replace your device if it fails their tests. - Always - They will replace it 3 times per calender year, and the 4th time with will replace it with a comparable device of their choosing, but they will always yield to your decision so long as you stand by your choice and don't take no for an answer.
Verizon customer service rep managers will almost always do what they can to make you happy, and if you get one that one, just call back and talk to someone else.
When they trouble shoot your phone, simply make sure that nothing works. They arnt there with you, they cant verify anything that you are saying.
Verizon - Please power off the phone and power it back on, did this fix the problem?
you - nope, in fact it just reboot again
verizon - play, please do a factory restore
you - alright, 1 sec (go take a crap, go smoke a cig, anything) alright its done. Oh wow look at that, it reboot again
verizon - okay sir where would you like you're replacement sent too?
its seriously that easy. They dont verify your returned device does in fact have the problem you said. They dont care, at all. I got my incredible because i dropped my BB storm 2 months after i got it, and smashed the screen. i called and said i wanted a droid incredible, they said no, I said yes, they said no way no how. I asked to have my service canceled, he said "where would you like your droid incredible shipped too"
they are in business to keep you happy, and they will do just that. Some of the customer reps will be a little difficult, and if they are, call back and talk to some pushover who will do what you want.
I get my phones replaced 3 times per year for having "problems" I wait for a new model to come out that i want, and then my phone has a 4th "problem" and i either get the new phone for free, or i get it at a significant discount.
at any rate, if your incredible is rebooting, or shutting down, its defective. You need to have it replaced. Call Verizon, and make sure any test that have you do "fails". Like i said, it don't matter if you have the phone with you or not, just say "ya.. uh huh, yup, uh huh. nope that didn't work.. okay ill try that...nope didn't work.. nope didn't work either" and they will replace it.
good luck
