Evo 4G vs Epic 4G

I've had a chance to play with my cousin's Samsung Galaxy (T-Mobile)... I love the screen, but the iPhone still has a better color reproduction. But as long as Samsung continue support for their phones, I might buy the Epic in a years time. :)
 
I'm more interested in the hardware of the phones than the software. If you root the galaxy s, you could have an htc sense rom installed if you want instead of touchwiz. Also, with all the different launchers in the market, software really isn't an issue. Hardware is the most important thing for me. I went to the Att store the other day and checked out the captivate because it is very similar to the Epic. The captivate's screen may not be as big as the Evo, but the samoled screen appears brighter and more vivid than the Evo. Colors seem to just pop off the screen. Also, I like the how the Evo has a larger screen but I don't like how it feels in the hand. I have trouble operating it without using 2 hands. The Captivate felt very solid and I was extremely impressed by the build quality. It felt very solid but also very light at the same time. It fit perfectly in my hand and was great for one handed use. Video playback on the captivate looked much better than it did on the Evo. The screen size difference between the two phones is very noticeable but the samoled screen on the captivate more than made up for it. Everything was so clear and vivid. The hummingbird processor in the captivate is faster than the Evo's and the GPU in the the captivate blew the Evo's away. I played Asphalt 5 on the phones side by side and it was no comparison: the Captivate won by a landslide. The Evo seemed to lag a bit during the game while the Captivate ran smoothly and clearly. I also tested the camera and camcorder on both phones. Although the Evo boasts an 8mp camera, the Captivate's still shots seemed noticeably clearer and more vibrant. The captivate's camcorder was far superior to the Evo's also. Sprint's version of the Galaxy S, the Epic, seems to be even better than the Captivate. Along with an on screen keyboard, you have the option to use the slide out hardware keyboard. In terms of design between the Epic and the Evo, I'd say the Evo wins this category. Although the epic is a great looking device also. In this day and age of rooting and modding, software isn't as much of an issue as it used to be. Many people complain about Samsung's past but they have clearly built great phones in the Galaxy S line. You really can't go wrong with the Evo or the Epic, but in my opinion, I think the Epic is the better device.

nice pics. you get a good idea that size wise it stacks up well against the evo without the keyboard adding any real bulk.

I'd like to see a photo that's straight on with a ruler rather than an angular shot.

Angular shots with no object of reference can be very misleading. Like the girl on myspace who takes the "myspace shot". Or facebook.

Either way I'm used to a little heft with my phones and I like it personally. Fits well in my large hand.
 
Even if I already hadn't got one already, I'd still get the Evo over Epic. Like others have said, I don't want a physical keyboard. It's one of the reasons I passed on the Droid and the Palm Pre.

I'd love to have a SAMOLED screen, but the 4.3" size on the Evo is a nice consolation.

I see the Epic as Sprint's answer to the Droid, like how Sprint came out with their answer to the Razer with the Samsung a900:

Slider keyboard? No thanks. Swype destroys any physical keyboard and it just adds weight and bulk. Even if its only half an inch, its still extra space I dont need. Not to mention its a Samsung, most of their phones are garbage.

Destroys? I think not. It's all a matter of personal preference.

I'd like to see someone reach 55-60+ 100% accurate wpm (consistently)with a random word base using swype like I can on my samsung moment.
 
It is amazing how some keep saying there is no need for a physical keyboard when it really is preference, yet they like to state it as fact. I just deactivated my evo and went back to the moment until the epic comes out. Just can't stand typing on the screen regardless of what keyboard I was using.

And that evo/epic pic is skewed in the evo's favor. You can see the table is angled up to the right.
 
it's a shame the Epic is so curvy and round, and what's up with that cheap looking chrome border around the keyboard? i had high hopes for the Epic but the EVO looks more professional compared to the kiddie looking Epic. Only if the Epic looked somewhat like the Captivate, then I'd consider. I really wanted to like the Epic. Just my opinion of course.
 
Here's the Sizeasy comparison of the two phones. Epic is taller and narrower. Evo is shorter and wider. Epic is a touch thicker. Makes zero sense to really bash or hate on one or the other. I liked my Evo. Just hate typing on it, plain and simple. That's why there are options.

It's kind of hard to say, because Android's blessing is also its flaw. Between HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and others, there will always be another phone out there somewhere down the line with better specs than what's currently out right now. I had the Samsung moment, and I loved it. Even people with the Motorola Droid commented on the screen on mine was better than theirs and such. Now I rock the evo, and I'm more than happy with it. Be it hardware or software if even apps, at the end of the day, your phone is what you make it. And if anything, just do your research on what may come out once its time for you to upgrade after a year. I'm sure something better than the epic will be out by then.

Do some research there buddy. Fastest text message ever was done with Swype and there are plenty of people who can type faster with it than a keyboard :rolleyes: Ironically on a Samsung phone too

I don't think that shot is misleading at all. Look at the following pic and you will see that one end of the Epic is thicker than the other. You can bet that it is the thinner end's measurement that they use in their specifications for thickness.

ooooo...aaaahhhh....the fastest text message ever. quick text messages is all swype is good for. well thought out emails, editing in word or excel. It gets annoying. And you lose the cursor keys that are really nice on the Evo's keyboard. Actually, you lose them on any replacement keyboard unless you toggle through keyboards.

And who cares if some type faster with it. Some type faster on a physical keyboard. Some type faster with the iphone keyboard. Some could give a rat's patoot about pitting one phone against another and just enjoy what suits their needs. It's all about personal preference.
 
well then don't forget the camera bump on the Evo and the inability for the phone to lay flat without the lens hitting the surface. The more inline camera and bump on the bottom alleviate that problem on the Epic.

It may just be the lens that is raised, but it affects the whole phone especially since many are getting a case specifically to combat that issue.

and again, who really cares. It's still pretty damn thin for a slider phone, more in line with the droid than their older Moment. So if people are more comfortable with a physical keyboard, it's the way to go. Hump or no hump. Is there something to really gain by slamming it because it has a hump when the Evo has an inflamed nipple for a camera?

Also, the little bump will probably feel good in the hand when using the phone in landscape.

I didn't slam anything. I posted a picture showing it looking thicker than the EVO, you said the picture was skewed/misleading. I provided an additional photo and some commentary to back up my claim that my picture is not misleading.

I did not at anytime talk negatively about the phone or its features.

You need to quit being so defensive...it warps your perception.
 
I'm just warped in general, but the dimensions aren't meaningless because of the hump. As I said, you discount the nipple camera on the Evo which might as well be a hump. Technically the Evo should be measured at the camera for thickness then. Extra nipples and humps are equal blemishes :D

Taking the pic from the bottom though does explain the thickness difference between the two. Should take a pic of the Evo with it's top at the Epic's bottom and see how it looks.
