...Should take a pic of the Evo with it's top at the Epic's bottom and see how it looks.

I agree, I wish Engadget would have done that. And one that compares the tops of both phones.

I personally think the Epic will be a very nice phone and I am considering it as an option. I have had my EVO for a week, and I get my premier upgrade on 9/1.

I might try to talk my daughter into getting the Epic with my premier upgrade so I can check it out. Right now she thinks shes wants a BB Curve, but just because it comes in purple...:D

I'm giving my evo to a coworker and using his upgrade for the Epic. My worry is still email. I hate tock android email. IMAP folder support is very limited. The white text on black background is annoying, and I get the "load more emails" more often than I'd like. I much prefer webOS for email and texting, but Sense at least made it more bearable. I don't like K9 either and just don't understand why google doesn't do a better job integrating "all" email with the same fuctionality they give gmail.

No, that was fastest text messaging on a touchscreen only device, which was a newly created category.

Next time, YOU do the research.

I love it when someone comes in and gives a cocky answer for no reason, then gets smacked around when IOWA comes back and sets him straight :D

Way to go IOWA! :)

Looks thick to me, compared to the EVO:

That is a false and VERY misleading picture

Get a picture that has the Evo's camera side against the Epic's camera side or don't bother engadget...

However the reason for the new category is that touchscreen devices are FASTER with software like swype. Note that that time beat the fastest previous record when all device types were combined.

How is it deceiving? People can judge what their eyes see.

I'm one of the first to get the HTC Evo 4G (at Google I/O), and I've been using since then. But even I know that the Epic is a much better phone, especially hardware wise. Especially if you want to do any 3D gaming, you'll want to go with the Epic. Check out the end (5:20) of this clip to see the difference in GPU power YouTube - ‪Samsung Captivate benchmarks and graphics test‬‎

I would have liked to get an Epic 4G instead of the Evo, but since my family is migrating to AT&T, I'll be getting the Samsung Captivate.

Maybe I should call guniess then, because I cann beat that... seriously.

But I'm not denying swype is a godsend for touchscreen only phones. It is, and I even use it on my moment from time to time for quick replys.

I got a chance to fool with the tmobile version of the galaxy S..and although I know the Sprint version will be different there's no way on earth i'd trade my evo for the tmobile version.

You would have downgraded significantly. Remember you heard it here first.

I work for sprint and have gotten a chance to play with both. The Evo is a great phone and does a lot of things. But the Epic has a better screen almost makes everything look 3D. Not only that but the Voice to text option is much better on the Epic then the Evo. I know that Samsung has made some faulty phones in the past but they have step there game up. And they do the exact same things. And you can stream stuff to your TV wirelessly and w/ the Evo you need a cored to that.

I just checked out the Samsung Vibrant and Captivate reviews from engadget and I'm not impressed. I was thinking about getting the epic but considering how similar it is too the other galaxy s phones, I'm leaning back towards the Evo.
Engadget's pros:
1.Amazing display
2. Thin and sexy
3. Froyo is a promised upgrade

Engadget's cons:
1.Uninspired UI skin
2. Seems slow considering processor
3. Questionable battery life

Captivate and Vibrant Scorecard: 7/10
HTC Evo Scorecard: 9/10
Samsung Galaxy S review shootout: Captivate for AT&T and Vibrant for T-Mobile -- Engadget
According to GSMarena, Galaxy S is the best Android phone so far. And about the cons :
1. LauncherPro, simple as that.
2. Not with the newest FW.
3. "Questionable" - what does that even mean? Any real numbers? The battery life is great.

I had an EVO and while I was wowed at first...after two weeks and 2 different phones I went back to my BB (which I now can't stand) till the EPIC comes out.

I was utterly unimpressed with the video playback capabilities and I thouight the camera sucked. I'm a photographer so I know how to tweak even cell phones to get the bext images. Keep in mind, 8 mega pixels actually means more blurry images compared to a 5 (assuming they had the same software) due to increased pixel density and increased motion blur from unsteadiness.

The other thing that drove me away from EVO was that after a week, both phones started to shut down at times when trying to answer a call or load a page on the web. They would simply go dark and then go through the entire boot procedure without even touching the damn things...and I know of two others who have had the same exact issues.

Both were running 2.1 then Froyo, both were fully charged (BTW..I had no battery issues at all and never installed an APP killer even though the guys at Sprint told me it was all but mandatory)...on battery or plugged in.

Two EVO's from two different stores and similar problems. To much of a coincidence to be a coincidence to me!

Even iif the phones hadn't shut off, I thought the video playback quality was a huge joke.

Is there any such record with a hardware keyboard for texting in a phone? I would seriously consider calling guiness if you do type 50-60 WPM, I type that fast using a computer keyboard. :)

Anyone has any record of the world's fastest texting with or without a keyboard?

If both had come out on the same day, I most likely would've went with the Epic. Coming from a G1 I really miss having a physical keyboard... Swype makes things a lot more tolerable on my EVO though.

As far as benchmarks and 3d gaming... I personally don't care about that so much. My phone does what I want it to quickly and I never get bothered by its multitasking speed as I used to on my G1. The thing that bugs me most about my phone is the 30fps cap, luckily I'm rooted.

Having played with the Vibrant, I must say the screen is pretty nice. The feel of the phone however, was utter crap in my opinion. It's too light and felt like I could crush it with one hand, but this can be taken as a pro or con I guess.

If the Epic is built using the same materials to save on weight, it might actually feel too cheap to me, but it's not out yet so I can only speculate....

People look at Android's fragmentation as a pretty big problem, but look at the choices in hardware we get compared to the iPhone where all you get to choose your storage size and color... Companies constantly one-up each other and it's great. I can't wait until I'm allowed to upgrade my EVO because some crazy Androids are going to be out there....

what i want to know is what does the epic have that the evo doesn't outside of a physical keyboard

because i'm on a few waiting lists for the evo and they said by the end of the week they should be getting it in. and if the epic is a lot better then i'd rather wait. and what's with the 30 day thing

if i get an evo i can trade it in for another phone, what if the epic isn't out by then, what would i do

-MUCH better screen
-better processor (more power efficient, better rendering for gaming and HD video playback)
-better battery life (due to above and super amoled technology)

People keep saying the screen isn't big enough but in my opinion the quality more than makes up for it (plus 4" is still hella big). The phone is only .6mm thicker as well. I think the truth is that people don't like seeing a product that does things better than the one they just got so they of course will try to justify their purchase. Nothing wrong with that, but don't let it skew your decisions.

thanks, i just think it's the fact that i want a new phone so bad, i'm willing to take anything. in the heart of hearts, i know i should probably get the epic.

i just wish they would put out a release date because i really need a new phone. can i get an evo, return it in 30 days, get another phone, return it in 30 days and then get the epic (assuming the epic doesn't come out in 30 days)

Thats with an app called extreme typist. As you can see that's not even my top score.

GSMArena is reviewing US only CDMA phones now?
What? I never said Galaxy S was better than EVO, my post was just a reaction to that Engadget review. Engadget basically said that the phone sucks and slapped a 7/10 rating, while GSMA thinks it's better than Desire.

If you write a sentence like:

According to GSMarena, Galaxy S is the best Android phone so far.

...in a thread entitled Evo4G vs Epic 4G, there is a clear implication that GSMA thought the Galaxy S was better than the Evo. I was just verifying that they didn't since they are a UK based GSM phone site.
