[How-To] Force the Official Android 2.2 Froyo Update for the Motrola Droid (FRG01B | Update 1 of 2)

I got back from a short vacation Monday (8/9) and found this thread about a week late. Seeing all the positive response on the first two days (8/3) I updated my droid following the excellent instructions. It went without a hitch so about six hours later I upgraded my wife's droid. Again no problems. Then I caught up in my reading and saw all the problems. Count our two phones as working fine on FRG01B after close to a week. Thank you Trident and company. :D:D:D

I'm new to this my wife and I both have the motorola droid she has received the 2.2 update from verison. The day before yesterday. I however am still waiting for it and was wondering if to receive the one from verison if I had to have the forced manual one done first. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I have successfully installed the update and put it inthe astro file for the sd card. But when I go to restart, the motorola "m" just appears and stays however long I hold down the x button...and then stays until I pop the battery. Any thoughts? Please help. Thanks.

I am guessing you mean downloaded the update.zip file rather than installed it. Until you run the update it just a file out there.

You want the root (the top level folder, not one called root or one called astro). If you have the update in the proper folder you should get an exclamation point (see the screen captures) rather than the M.

See if this helps out any.

My buddy just got the OTA, I did it manually about two weeks ago. Here are the numbers from the OTA for those who are worried they did not manually update the official release:

Android Version
2.2
Baseband version
C_01.43.01P
Kernel version
2.6.32.9-g103d848
android-build@apa26 #1
Build number
FRG01B

These numbers from the OTA matched my forced manual exactly. For what it is worth.

Im reading on this site about people having no problems but i'm getting a problem right from the start. I followed all the steps in the beginning and am to the stage of copying the file. I selected the file in the download list and hit copy. It doesnt seem to be copying though. When I hit astro up twice it goes to the screen that says root at the top. I hit Edit but it doesnt come up with a paste. Does anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?

Hi, I installed the update following the directions, but now my gps doesnt seem to work. It can not find my location. Advice?

Hi im new to this forum could someone explain rooted to me ?

I'll give you the newbie explanation (as that is what I am). It means that you have gone through the process of gaining access to the somewhat hidden system files at the "root" of your phone. You might have heard of "jail breaking" an iPhone -- it's kind of like that. Getting that root access allows you to do non-stock things with your phone. There are many threads that explain how to do it, all with major warnings that if you screw up, you may "brick" your phone (render it unusable). So, this is not for the technically unsavvy or faint of heart. But if you do it, you can do all kinds of cool things -- the one that tempts me the most is being able to use the phone as a free wifi hotspot.

The great thing about the Android OS, though, is that you can highly customize your phone even without rooting.

Thanks for the quick and painless update i couldn't wait another day however i have noticed that since going to 2.2 my battery drains twice as fast as it used to. I uninstalled task killer because apps just restart themselves anyhow but besides dolphin using 10% none of my other apps exceed 3% of battery usage(and only two of them besides my browser are on the list) so why the drastic change in battery usage?

Try a "factory reset" - many, many people here have found that it can solve a lot of the little problems that appear on phones after upgrading to 2.2. There are several threads with instructions on how to do it pretty painlessly, so I won't repeat them here.

New to the forum. Just registered mostly to say thanks to the submitter of this update and to the mod of this forum for presenting it so well and being helpful the whole way through it. I actually just found it today so Im a little late on the update. I blame work! lol But so far is has worked great. Nothing bad to report at all. I know its still early to say that but for others like me that want some reassurance from others that have done it...I figured I would post a brief reply.

Interesting experience to report -- with two main points: I noticed my phone speaker got very scratchy and annoying on Sunday. Took it into Verizon last night -- they called tech support, who asked whether I had upgraded yet to 2.2. Supposedly, they are aware of a speaker issue and said that the new update is supposed to fix it. (Point 1) I said that I had forced the update to 2.2, and that I noticed the problem AFTER the update (but not immediately after -- about 2 weeks later). The tech guy then warned me that forcing manual updates (instead of waiting for Verizon to push it to you) VOIDS THE WARRANTY. (Point 2). HOWEVER, he said that since I "apparently didn't know that," he would not enforce it, and I'm getting a new phone Thursday. (I will say that other than the warranty comment, the whole process was quite painless and fuss-free.)

I'll also note that my husband (who got his Droid 5 months after I did) got his OTA update yesterday morning, but I've received nothing OTA (perhaps because somehow they can tell I already have what they are pushing?) As others have reported, I can confirm that the info listed about his OS version is identical to what my phone reports after my manual update to 2.2 (and he got FRG01B, not FRG22). So, had I not said anything, I seriously doubt Verizon would have known I did a forced update instead of one OTA.

I know im a little late on the manual update, but Im getting tired of waiting for the Verizon OTA update. Which are the best download options for the 2.2 update for the OTA (just using the phone) and downloading from the computer to your phone?

Thanks Trident...

I followed your instructions for install, via my droid, and now I feel like I have a brand new phone. I did this yesterday around noon and everything's been super so far. I have had so many phones throughout the last twenty years, but this has been the only one I've ever truly enjoyed using.

I have had this one since around November 09. After reading the forums about Froyo, and tired of waiting on Verizon, I decided to do the update and am so glad I did. I appreciate your contributions, as well as the others in the forum, to making the process as pain free as possible.

Many thanks again..p.s.....the USB Debug box is checked too!

Help. After my installation (BTW awesome) the only noticable problem is that my music players are not recognizing my music on the sd card. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone have a solution? I am going to try and reinstall.

I just got a Motorola droid today that is running android 2.0.1, and I'm having trouble finding the update.zip file so that I can update to 2.1 and then to 2.2. Or can I just use the update.zip file for 2.2 and go straight form 2.0.1 to froyo?

So, I'm assuming you have already activated the phone and are getting service. Did you get it used? If it already is rooted than you wouldn't get an OTA update. You should have been prompted immediately after initially setting up your phone to get the 2.1 update if it is running stock.

Peter Alfonso's site has all of the official and rooted versions of Android here: Peter Alfonso

Does anyone know if the FRG01B "Master OTA" will update straight from 2.0.1? I think it might.

I got the phone used to day and I activiated it over the phone. I have been checking for updates, but it says the software is up to date. I even tried *#*#checkin#*#* to force the phone to check for updates. I tried that site earlier and tried to upgrade to 2.1 first, but during bootloader it ran like it was going to update and then failed. So I don't think the phone is rooted.

Thanks. The update worked great! Got an error message at the end while writing the image, but the phone seems to have updated to 2.2, so maybe it was nothing. We'll see how it goes.

I just did the walk through on forcing the update. I have a few issues. I only get a 1x connect and every time I reboot my phone I get a missed call notification of a call I received two days ago. Any help on this would be much appriciated, other then those two issues it seems pretty bad ass.

Thanks
