Insurance on X. Worth it? Yes, no, opinions...

Really, really simple decision. If you can afford the purchase price of a replacement phone should you lose/crash your DX, don't buy the insurance. If you can't but could afford the deductible, buy it. IMHO, that is the only thing one should consider when making this decision.

Has anyone considered SquareTrade.com? 2 yrs - $96 (for $399 phone). 2 yrs - $144 (for $600 phone)... Whatdya think?

For guys talking about home owner's ins, to add this as a rider... can that work with Renter's ins too. I don't own a house.

Thanks.

Good question - check with your insurance agent. Different companies have different offerings, so what one doesn't offer, another one may.

I guess the bottom line is do what makes you happy. If the option is there to obtain inexpensive coverage for your $600 phone, I would jump on it. These other options (unless that's your only choice) can get very pricey just to have peace of mind.

For people who are able, $10-12 a year to cover your ass is well worth it if you can get it in with your homeowners policy.

Insurance is a suckers bet. If it weren't there wouldn't be insurance companies. On average, they make more money than they pay out.

Certainly that's the goal of every business, no? I don't know too many businesses whose goal is to break even. :p

On a phone that costs >$500 to replace, I chose to go with insurance. However, I went with squaretrade instead of Asurion. I've personally had good luck with them. FYI, Squaretrade is running a coupon for $99 for two years for the X (Which works out to ~$4.13/mo). Code: DROID45

I think it will be valid for a couple of weeks. Some discussion here:
I went with squaretrade instead of VW and Asurion

Thanks Man! You just saved me $45! I think $99 for a two-year warranty on a $600 phone is a good deal!

So then does anyone have details on exactly what square trade covers vs what asurion covers?

Also, is there any difference in how they handle claims? In other words do they both replace the phone in question themselves? Do they use new phones? Do they use the same model? Or maybe they cut a check? Is the check for a predetermined amount or does it decrease as your phone gets older?

Get the picture? :)

So, i thought some of you might like to know...

To those of you that decided to get insurance, Asurion is now offering mobile recovery at no extra cost.

You can:

-Locate your phone. It also gives you data showing you where your phone has been.

-Lock your phone. You can do a remote lock.

-Remote wipe. For those of you that have sensitive info, you can wipe your phone remotely.

-Alarm. If you just lost your phone somewhere in the couch cushions, you can set off an alarm that will sound even if your phone is on silent or vibrate.

If you havent added insurance, and you think you may want to (or if this feature has changed your mind about the $7.99 a month, you have 30 days from date of purchase to add. and, provided your phone is in like new condition, even if you bought your phone over a month ago (15th-17th), verizon will likely allow you to add.

visit www.mymobilerecovery.com to have a text with the link to download sent to your phone. at that point, you just need to install and setup, and you can manage the app from the same website.

hope some of you find this useful! i think it's a pretty sweet feature for no extra cost.

asurion now adds mobile recovery. i know there are apps out there that essentially do the same thing, but it's a pretty great value add for no extra cost. see my thread titled "mobile recovery" for more info.

downloaded and installed. works great! seems to work a little better than findmydroid or any other comparable app i've tried.

This is major info. well.. to me, anyway. :p I would love for everyone to see this, so I'm sticking this for a day or so.

Props to the OP. :)

Installed it and after a couple of hic-ups (cockpit errors) completed the setup.

Ran a test and it located my DX with no problems.

Cool.

awesome!, how are people using this and dealing with the "gps bug" at the same time though? For this to be 100% functional the gps must be on. If the gps is on my phone never sleeps after some aps access it

appreciate the sticky! i work for vzw, and i just got this info today. stores should be aware of this within the next couple days. i am interested in people's experience with this, so i can pass along any problems to the appropriate people.
so far, i find that it works really well, but i havent had any GPS issues.

I just ran it, located me after a few min, sure enough after I was "running" 100%,toggled gps and it dropped to 60% in a few min. I don't want to have to remember to toggle gps every hr this thing updates (longest update interval)

Ran both the locate and alarm tests and have had no issues with GPS or battery.

Since I was new to smart phones and bought mine on launch day I have never had battery issues. I always run with WiFi, BT and GPS enabled. I have disabled WiFi only on occasion to run some tests in various places.

Am I one of the lucky ones? (Shoot. Not enough wood to knock on... LOL.)

I always have GPS on. The phone won't use it unless something needs it. I dont' notice any more battery wear than when I had it off for the first 2 weeks I owned the phone.

+1. i havent turned it off once since i got the phone, and i regularly get 14-18 hours.

I believe the problem that some people seem to have is that once an application does use it, it doesn't stop being used, even if you've exited the application.

Okay this is probably going to sound incredibly stupid, but the thought just now hit me. What if GPS, WiFi, and/or BlueTooth are similar to that of a simple lightswitch? What if constantly turning one or more of these off and on throughout the day will actually cause more battery drain than if you were to leave them on/off the whole time? Perhaps it takes more energy for them to start from a dead stop than it does to simply continue powering them when they're already on.

I doubt there is much truth to my idea. There's probably a hell of a lot more to it than that, like software regulations, etc., but I thought it was at least worth mentioning.

I might get insurance now. I don't know if I can for sure right now but I'll see about it. The fact that this system is tied directly into Verizon, (right?) would certainly make this handy.

This definitely helps the argument to actually get insurance.
Really? There are other apps in the $5 range that do this. I doubt saving $5 would sway many people to get the insurance or not.

How do they verify if you are a TEC customer when you download/install this?
