[HOWTO] Tether natively

So if I do this...

I can connect my phone to comp USB and just click mobile broadband connect and it works? Or what?

Yup...pretty cool!

On long trips, my wife can sit in the front seat with the laptop and search the internet. Or we can turn on some Calliou videos from youtube for the kids.

I use it in public places (like the airport) to connect to my remote desktop - cause I don't want to use an unsecure network for that.

The only problem is that you cannot make calls while connected. Is there any way around this? I need to try my Google Voice # while connected...that might work?!?!

I make calls just fine, it just suspends the connection. Then when the call ends, it reconnects. This is on Windows 7, at least.

When using Remote Desktop, it closes the screen when the connection is lost. So if I have RD running and am looking at a screen with phone numbers, I lose that information as soon as I dial the first number.

It makes it difficult to do my job because I need to access information on RD while talking on the phone (sales).

1. Putting Caillou on in public SHOULD be illegal!

2. Anyone who says it is not unethical is fooling themselves. You signed an agreement NOT TO DO this. Ethically, you all know this fact and are going against what you agreed not to do.

3. I wont use it because it simply isnt that important to me. The reward doesn't outweigh the risk. FOR ME. You all have to make this call for yourselves.

4. This conversation NEEDS to be in this thread, not split. Without it, I might not have known what was in the TOS I signed and I would be ignorant to my violation.

Everyone have a wonderful day.

Nothing you can do about this. This is not a limitation of the software. You can't use voice and data connections at the same time on Verizon's (current) network.

You can on AT&T, assuming you are in their limited 3G coverage area. I'm no expert on the matter, but from what I understand you'll be able to do this in the future when Verizon transitions to LTE as well.

Really though, if this is important for your job get a dedicated broadband connection for your laptop instead of trying to use your phone. How did you do this before? I'd probably try to keep your solution above board if this is for business too.

yes, this is exactly what we used to do on older "dumb phones" (see -> Mark_Venture's Verizon Phone Info Page and read the notes about the QPST and NVM Factory hacks)
IIRC, this was 1x only, was it not? I don't remember ever getting 3G with the QPST/NVM editing stuff.

This here hack was so easy, though, I had to try it. Alas, I only got 1x with it as well.

On WinMo, this was worked around with the OS, using the Internet Sharing capability in Windows. This turned the phone into a NAT router (rather than a modem) and made all the IP traffic appear to come from the phone. WinMo 6.5 had the ability to do this using WiFi, USB or Bluetooth. Android will get it soon enough (Linux certainly already has it).

I will be curious to see what Verizon does when Froyo comes out with tethering built in, with much publicity attesting to that fact.

When it comes to tethering on VZW, short version has always been... If you read VZW's T&C's on paper (or their web site -> Terms & Conditions ) to "legally" tether with VZW phones (after EVDO phones came out) is to subscribe to their Mobile BroadBand or BroadBand Access plans. Do it any other way, including apps like PDAnet, Tether.com, etc, violates Verizon's Terms of Service (at least on paper) so can result in termination of service and/or additional fees/high bills!! In other words, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Agreed. It's in the contract, you signed it when you got the plan, and if you violate it they can (and probably sometimes do) retaliate. It's either that or data caps, though if some of these current- and next-gen phones get PC-like appetites for data, there may be data caps anyway.

I tether maybe 3-4 times a year, for emergencies. If Verizon had an occasional tethering option, I'd probably pay for it, but I can't justify spending $15 or $20 a month for that 3-4 times a year. If I were always on Verizon's internet from my laptop, I'd get an aircard anyway to keep from tying up the phone.

Does the method described in the first post work for the "Mobile Hotspot" app Verizon is rolling out?

Someone said it did but I haven't personally tested it. Seems like it uses the same usernames though so if anyone is feeling brave..

Works perfect for the USB Broadband Connect though.

Install android-wired-tether, then follow the directions here:
Issue 21 - android-wired-tether - HTC Evo 4G workaround: Two commands, can they be added to the program? - Project Hosting on Google Code

In short,
Download "GScript Lite" from the app store Create two scripts:
1) Pre-tethering, this script disables the USB Storage and ADB interface:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch 2) Post-tethering, this script enables the USB Storage and ADB interface:
echo 3 > /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch

run those pre and post
This is on a rooted phone with out having to use openvpn, a much better solution.

I'm sorry but what the hell are you talking about? lol

Yes it does. Just give the 3G Hotspot several minutes to assign an IP address to your tethered device. It took my computer about 2 minutes before I could browse the internet.

Now, the question is... Does 3G Hotspot allow Ad-hoc connections or Access Point connections?

Question about the "USB debugging" in PDAnet.
Screen pops up saying: "debugging is intended for development purposes only. It can be used to copy data between your computer and your dvice, install applications on your device without notification, and read log data."

Does this open some super secret squirrel backdoor that would allow viruses, trojans , etc access to my phone or computer?

Yeah, I'm new to all this smartphone stuff.

So if we really want to talk ethics, is it ethical for someone to knowingly violate Terms and Conditions of an agreement? (we all signed an agreement when started our service with the wireless company, or renewed to get a discount on the latest device). My answer would be no. Its unethical.

Here's an interesting angle on this: I am a former Alltel customer. I still have my Alltel plan. I have NOT signed up for a Verizon plan, despite the fact that I just got a new phone. I didn't change my plan, so there were no TOS to agree to about the data plan, etc.... because I did that with Alltel, and they didn't care about tethering.

As far as I am concerned.... I can tether if I like, and I encourage them to attempt to show me where I agreed not to do it. It would be quite entertaining to see what they do when they can't.

They might wait for your contract to expire and then dump you as a customer if you piss them off enough :)

Im in the same boat....
under my alltel plan, I was allowed to Tether....

In Verizon's eyes they don't care if 1% of their subscribers tether. Its a necessary cost to them.

Their 30$ data fee is significantly more than they need to cover the 1% of tethers. They want customers and will not cancel someones contract, especially someone who pays them on time. Use it up without fear.

As far as ethics go, how can Verizon charge us 30$ for data when it costs them 10$? and another 25$ to tether (or whatever). Business is business, don't ask don't tell> Some food for thought
