[HOWTO] Tether natively

just followed the steps in OP post.. worked great. so now all i have to do is start the mobile 3g hotspot and run it on my phone, then connect wirelessly to my phone? i wont get charged?

In Verizon's eyes they don't care if 1% of their subscribers tether. Its a necessary cost to them.

Their 30$ data fee is significantly more than they need to cover the 1% of tethers. They want customers and will not cancel someones contract, especially someone who pays them on time. Use it up without fear.

As far as ethics go, how can Verizon charge us 30$ for data when it costs them 10$? and another 25$ to tether (or whatever). Business is business, don't ask don't tell> Some food for thought

Ethically, Verizon can charge whatever you want. There's no phone monopoly in this country so you could theoretically go to a different carrier. The data plan is just for your phone and your phone only. Ethically speaking, you signed a contract and if you tether, you're breaking that contract.

I haven't tried this, not because it's an ethical thing, but right now I don't have any use for a wireless hotspot. I can use pdanet if I really need to connect, but hardly ever use that.

Only an opinion, but I would think that the risk of getting caught is related to the bandwith you use... If your phone number is moving an enormous amount of data, you may might attract some attention. If you only use this "hacked' wifi for basic surfing and your data usage is somewhat inline with normal (or even heavy) phone users, you probably won't stand out enough to get noticed.

I think it's like the whole mp3 downloading thing a few years ago... People who you saw in the news getting caught, were uploading/downloading HUGE numbers of songs. The guy getting a couple tracks here and there isn't likely to get caught.

I heard there is a way for non root users to use this feature (without paying for it). Supposedly if you dial ##778 you get a menu. Can someone walk me through this?

I have not tethered since I signed up with Verizon (granted, that was less than a week ago), but I used to use PDAnet when I was on Sprint and never got charged for anything. I wasn't hooking up to itunes and downloading multi GB files or anything, I just used it for basic net surfing while I was camping or on the road. Even though it was a different company, the conversation was the same...will I get caught, will I be charged, will I get in trouble, etc...I don't really have the answer to any of those questions, I'm just saying that I have done it before and for me there were no consequences.

I originally just changed the DUN NAI name in the M.IP Default Profile cause that was the instructions in another thread. Then I went into this thread and saw that the Security S.IP DUN name also had to be changed. When I did that, I noticed that the signal bars were fluctuating just like they did before Froyo. I undid that change to see if that was in fact the reason for the fluctuations, and sure enough, the bars became stable again. It's no big deal, as it doesn't actually affect the dBm readings, but I just found it odd. Anyone else notice this, or is it just my phone that's doing it?

I'm gonna have to go with either coincidence or your imagination on this one. Changing the login name in your settings isn't doing anything to your signal meter.

How can you confirm that the 3g hotspot "mod" has not added the verizon service to your account?

Some have mentioned that the Verizon hotspot sign-up page comes up the you try to use the hotspot feature for the first time. If you do not see the sign-up page does that mean the "mod" worked?

One thing people haven't mentioned yet, is that with Verizon, if you have a Palm, your data plan covers wifi tethering (for the same price we're paying for OUR data). So I don't see a problem if people do it on these phones too. I don't see why just Palms get the "right" to do that for the normal price. Plus, the only reason I have a data plan is because they FORCE it on us now. So if you're already forcing me to pay $30 for data I didn't want, why would I now pay an additional amount to tether? It's just them trying to milk as much money as possible out of the consumer. And no, we don't have a choice to go anywhere else for phone service since all the main cariers now require data plans. Before people freak out though, the only time I used pdanet was to download an ethernet driver for my brother's computer so that it'd recognize his ethernet port. I doubt Verizon is woried about that 1 MB that I used.

Well, the said method of changing the DUN info is BS.. anyone tried a speedtest?? you will notice our getting a blazing speed of .... 412kbps.. WOW!!! sarcasm.. I added the hotspot feature and with ur#.dun.vzw3g.com, Im now getting 1.4Mbs. Much better. Oh well, looks like if you want TRUE RevA, then you have to leave things alone..

Hmm, it's funny you mention it.....

The only thing that doesn't make sense here is why it says the server is 200 miles away, since when I do the same test from my home connection it's less than 50 miles away. I'm assuming that whatever router I'm eventually going through is 200 miles away. But regardless, sounds like you have a shitty signal or you just tested at the wrong time of the day. Sometimes I'll get more than 1MB, sometimes it'll be under. All depends what time of the day it seems. I highly, highly doubt the DUN is making that much of a difference, since all the data is ending up on the same network anyways, or so I'd think.

well, I am in the same location, same signal. The only diff was adding the hotspot. I had the hotspot feature deactivated, I removed/deleted the DUN info and back to the 400kbps range in the same location.

I can't do this under 2.2 - I did manage to do it before the update.

Yes, I know - ROOT!!! But I won't root now until there is a simple way on stock 2.2

I've been using this ever since I got the OTA on my DInc and it works great.

Is there any way at all though for VZW to distinguish data used from this vice using your phone's data? In other words, there's no way for them to tell I'm doing this right? To them they see it as me using my phone for data?

So far on the two unrooted Froyo Incs I've played with, I can't get this hack to work with the. I change the addresses to remove the dun portion, and try to connect using the VZ hotspot app and I still get the VZ mobile page saying I need to sign up or whatever. Is this supposed to work with the stock app on an unrooted Froyo phone? Am I missing something?

i have an unrooted froyo DInc, and mine works just fine having used the instructions in the OP.

Be sure to follow the instructions EXACTLY as written. I had issues until I did. Works perfectly now.

Maybe it's something as simple as your browser's cache? Try a different browser?

Not seeing slow speeds here, this is via the 3G hotspot app and WiFi on my computer tethered using the settings in the OP...running the test on my phone browser yields similar results.
FWIW I have been tethering from time to time for years and VZW does not notice this. It is essentially the same as your phone connecting to the data network for its own purposes. I don't really believe that they can tell if its a computer or your phone, they only crack down on total volume of data...Of course if you get a thousand dollar phone bill, dont cry to me...

Also, it is definitely a violation of your contract. If verizon could or did catch you they could make you pay or cancel your service or both. Some people have had this happen with previous phones i.e. hacked touch pro 2's in the past and gotten thousand dollar vzw bills..
use at your own risk and with discretion.
