Former iPhone users.. are you pleased?

I've had the Evo for two months. I picked up my wife's iphone to view an email she wanted me to see. I was struggling to move around the ui because I had forgotten its workflow since I left iphone for android. Funny how someone might consider something best when they might really mean familiar.

I don't have an evo, but I have a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant). I think there are many things that are better than IOS. My biggest issue is the connectivity between my computer and the phone.

The thing that Android can not compare with the iPhone is this integration. It is so easy. Plug it in an BAM! All my music choices, podcasts, photos, etc.

Now, on my Mac, I can only see my music which I don't care about as much. I really want to be able to just plug and sync my pod casts. Having my phone communicate with my computer so it knows which ones have been listened to, and the new ones are then automatically downloaded. It seems double twist is the best that can be done, and it is not that good.....

That and I can't see any paid apps as I am in China....

The need to plug it in is a con (for me, at least).

One thing I do like about the Evo--there are others--is the voice mail on the phone without needing to dial into it. Thats a plus. Still learning and still playing. Trying to find battery work arounds though my Evo did last longer yesterday on stand by almost 12 hrs on and 76% with little appmarket searching and checking website and one phone call. More playing around with customization.

As to the response about my post about Iphone being the first, thanks I either didn't realize or wasn't paying attention to palm and their touch screens. I didn't see alot of them, I saw a lot of Blackberrys though, they were almost a status symbol. So we can credit Apple and Steve Jobs with making the smartphone as in Iphone more for the masses.

The Evo is a learning curve definitely, though the deal breaker for me concerning the I phone was the battery not being able to be replaced, if the phone dies, you have to buy a whole new one, if the battery dies in any of the other non Iphones, you can replace them.

To those coming from Iphone to Droid, its a change for you, as it is for anyone coming from non smartphones or regular cells to a smartphone, you have one advantage you basically know what to expect from a smartphone, I do not other than phone books and maybe music media, I'm still seeing it like a child sees an amusement park as something wondrous and adventurous. Battery life does suck, as my little rant could sit three or four days before dying, but on heavy days it would show in battery consumption. I can get another battery and charger. I know Iphone users complain about battery consumption as well and even have a battery operated charger they carry with them or some carry with them. Samsung Galaxy users are also complaining about battery consumption and I'm sure the Droid X people as well. Its one of those things and getting a second or better battery isn't a bad thing.

I actually like the fact that I no longer have to use iTunes. Podcasts are all being posted in RSS and can be easily added to Listen. I have all my podcasts automatically downloading (on 3G) and are marked as listened vs. not listened.

This sort of topic can get heated, but let's all stay collegial on this, mmmk? Let's stay to the subject, not each other.

Personally, I can understand the frustrations.

The thing about Android - in my opinion only - is that it takes a bit more customization and little more investigation before you go from good phone to superphone.

That's its downside.

The big upside with Android is that so many customizations are possible that you can really end up with a phone that just does more (or seems to) much more easily. Except the iTunes integration - you have to go some add-ons for that.

To me that's the upside (in bold). I think it's more the time invested that may be the downside.

My frustration is with iTunes more than anything else. Does anyone else have issues with that hog? I have a quad core 3.6 Ghz processor 4 gb of RAM and I still have issues with iTunes. It runs slow to me and is clunky. I can't stand it. Give me all of the components to iTunes individually and I'm happy. Bundled together it just doesn't work for me. I have heard from Mac users that iTunes is integrated with Macs very well (as it should be) but I seem to experience issues with Windows.

I switched from iPhone to EVO two days ago and here are some features that I am missing. Maybe there is a way to get these but I just don't know enough about Android to figure these out.

c) The phone part leaves out much. In iPhone I could access contacts, call history, favorite contacts and voice mail all from one page. In EVO, I still cannot figure out how to create a short list of favorite contacts and then go to that list to dial that number from within the phone.

I hope I interpeted this correctly....

1. From the home screen, press "People".
2. Once in People, Tap the 2nd icon from the left "Groups"
3. Click on "Favorites".
4. Add contacts to that group.
5. Press return until you get back the home screen.
6. Swype to an empty screen
7. Long press, and add widget
9. Scroll down until you see "People"
10. Tap on "People"
11. Choose your widget.
12. Then choose your group.
13. Choose your location on the empty screen.
14. After your favorties are displayed, then tap one of
them to choose your default action for that contact.
( I personally choose "View")

I hope this helps

Yep - once upon a dim time, iTunes wasn't such a bad install for Windows - I used to use it on both platforms but switched to just Mac for iTunes and media.

I looked at what a friend of mine was having to put up with fairly recently in Windows nowadays - totally unacceptable bloated install. :-P

iTunes is just essentially an XML browser using the QuickTime engine to do the heavy lifting.

did you miss in each one where I showed you options....
backup...sprite, appbrain
calendar...jorte,
speed dial...via the menu in the dialer along with one touch dialing as well
voicemail...sorry, not integrated into the dialer. keep a shortcut on your homescreen.
remote server problems...try a different browser: dolphin HD and see if that helps.
battery life: smaller removable battery, larger screen, somewhat to be expected with more things accessing the net. keep active things to a minimum and try juice defender to help along with waiting for the 2.2 update to help further.

A couple questions. I checked out Sprite, mybackup (non pro), and also appbrain, but it seems like none of them totally backs up your phone. They backup some settings and apps without data (i.e. game saves). I found out that if you root, you can then backup everything and also create nandroid backups. Is there a way to do this without root? On the iPhone, even without jailbreaking, you could basically create nandroid backups which backs up every little detail of your phone.

1 more question. Using Dolphin HD, when I zoom (either double tap or pinch) and the text reflows, the screen always jumps and I lose my reading place. I notice that this doesn't happen on other android devices. Is there a fix for this?

yep, around 85% pleased. been using an iPhone 3G and 3GS before. my only gripe is the app market. there aren't enough of the good games on the market, and what's worse, paid apps are not available in my country. but overall, i'm still impressed and am not going back to the iPhone cult.

My wife went back to the iPhone just because of that.

Mostly pleased. The EVO is a lot faster than my iPhone 3G, but for us Mac owners there is no way to do a full backup. Also it is easier to delete email on the iPhone, and I can't figure out how to move email to a folder once it has been read. Angry Birds doesn't work on the EVO. Where is the 'killer apps' list?

All in all tho, I'll keep the EVO :)

Hi there! I had an iPhone 3G for two years, and just switched to the EVO last week, and so far, LOVING it. It's snappier than the iPhone, and I loooove how much more customizable it is. I'm still getting used to much of it, and the battery life seems even worse, but so far so awesome. :)

Check out the battery thread for some great tips on how to improve battery life. In actuality it can have much better battery life than iProducts if you do a few things. It helped me a whole lot!

Yeah, I just went through that this morning so it's too soon to tell if any of the changes stuck, but I hope they did. I'm sure just turning off Google Talk alone will help, but I also did that conditioning thing as well.

While you can get very good battery life on the EVO, I wouldn't say it's better than the iPhone's. Rooted and underclocked, people are getting 60 hours of battery life if you basically almost not use the phone. Technically, with 1% drain per hour, you should be able to idle for 4 days assuming you literally just leave your EVO sitting on your desk. On my old iPhone 3GS (with a smaller battery than the iPhone4), I could get 1% drain per 2-3 hours depending on signal reception right out of the box without jail breaking. After jailbreaking and underclocking, it was slightly better but not by a lot. My battery could last over 3 days, but that's with me actually using apps, browsing, and taking phone calls. It's also with 3G, Wifi, and GPS on full time, although Push was set off. I never had the chance to just let it sit there without doing anything to see how long idling could really last. I'd always hit the charger whenever my phone hits 50%.

I'm in charge of keeping my wife's iphone working. I plugged it in to accept the new update that helps to fix all the issues iOs4 broke. I couldn't believe itune 10 download 10 is over 350 megs. Wow.

Something I realized awhile back, rebooting your Evo automatically turns on 4g, the biggest battery drain for me. I keep 4g off until I need it.

ITunes is absolutely horrible. I do almost everything wirelessly on my Evo including file transfers, and I having to run back to mama everytime I want to add an mp3 is time consuming and frustrating. Apple basically makes it so annoying to add media to your device that most users just end up buying everything (which I'm sure is according to plan).

I love the fact that I can attach my phone and transfer files to it like a thumb drive. I've always wanted an mp3 player that worked this way. Sony? nope, they forced me to convert my mp3s to some BS proprietary format and use their special software tool and special memory card. bloat. itunes? more bloat. Not to mention it likes to delete songs here and there and pretend nothing happened. Even songs legally bought from the itunes store. To this day, Apple denies there was ever a problem, despite tons of complaints all over the intertubes. Enough with companies telling me how I should use my electronics.

And yeah, now I have my phone set up with sshd, so I can wirelessly transfer files to it via WinSCP. Doesn't get better than that :)

Hey guys, had an evo when it fist came out; canceled my contract with sprint due to the poor battery life on the evo. Went with the iphone 4, after 4 phone exchanges; poor reception issues and 95% of my calls being dropped I finally had it.
I went to radioshack yesterday and got me a brand new EVO and back to sprint. This time I'm not going back, I have already cancelled my contract with ATT and plan on staying around here to chat and get some help with the EVO. couldn't be happier with the coverage from sprint, anyone else outhere dumped the mighty I4 for the EVO? ;)
