Root Phone shattered, need to wipe it clean!

I got my Evo about three weeks ago with insurance. I just dropped it and the screen cracked, but luckily I can still see the display. I'm not sure I totally know how to return it to completely factory condition - I've rooted it with the 2.2 root method on XDA, installed Clockwork custom recovery, and installed a netarchy-toast kernel.

I've read about something called RUU. If I flash an RUU ROM, does this take care of the custom recovery as well? Normally I would do a bunch of reading and experimenting, but I have to wipe this phone and ship it ASAP. I would really appreciate it if someone would tell me somewhat detailed instructions on how to nuke this thing back to factory and returnable condition.

i actually have similair questions.

i have the big white spot on my screen, doesn't bother me too much as i really like my phone. been debating going through the unroot process for warranty. would really not like to.. lol. its the only issue i have with the phone.

question is, can i go to sprint and just have them replace the lcd? will they notice that i'm rooted if i just load the stock boot animation or rom?

One thing I never did but I read about, was wipe my data/cache/dalvik. Should I do this before installing the RUU?

Also, will this take care of my unlocked NAND/custom recovery?
 
The phone is going back to Sprint for a shattered screen so why will u worrying about going back to stock.

Because rooting still voids your warranty.

Last question!

I was doing extensive reading and saw that doing an RUU wipe leaves something called a PRI untouched. Does that matter?
 
you're not doing a warranty replacement for factory faulty parts, but for a insurance claim. I doubt they'll check if you have root or not.
You're doing a insurance replacement, root or not won't matter.

The shattered screen does not fall under warranty,faulty parts-hardware does.How does the fact that u r rooted is gonna have an impact on the shattered screen? This is consedered physical damage and will be replaced through ur insurance which means u r gonna have to pay $100 deductible.

You're missing my point. I am paying a $100 deductible; however, as it voids Sprint's warranty, it would be wise to return the phone in stock condition just as a precaution.

I did go through the RUU process and my problem has been solved, by the way. I appreciate the support. I still don't know about the PRI situation, but I'm assuming it will be fine.

Um, I doubt it. They're not out looking for rooted users, probably wouldn't cross their mind

yeah, that's kinda what i was thinking. just wondering if they will want to exchange me a rebuilt one or actually just replace my screen.

guess i should just call or go to sprint to have it done.

99% sure they will give you a refurb.

insurance does not = Sprint Warranty, FYI.

All the insurance company cares about is getting your $100 and the phone.

hell i can buy a new screen on ebay for less then 100$

but sprint should give me one for free, manufacturers warranty yeah?

so i guess what i was asking is does sprint care about roots for warranty issues? not a big deal to flash the RUU. i was just hoping they could pop in a new lcd since everything else is good.

Ur totally right,that's all they care about. But in my past experience I've never been given a refb phone.

yeah iv had my fair share of refurbs that on day one i had to send back and get another refurb.......Gotta love Sprints contracted insurance company.
 
Ok, a reply to many posts here...

1) You must wipe since it voids the factory warranty. I am sure sprint won't fix your phone due to that.

2) If you are going to pay 100 bucks either way, call them, phone was stolen, have em replace it for 100 bucks. Keep your phone as spare parts (at least the battery is worth it). And a free 8gb micro sd. The warranty that you pay for is vs damage, theft, etc. So claim lost/stolen. You won't be able to use the chips, but at least you got a case, battery, motherboard, anything, you can also sell it for spare parts to people willing to buy for 100 bucks on craigslist to make up for difference. But note this is technically insurance fraud.

3) PRI is independent, you don't hack that one, in fact you want the latest PRI from sprint always.

4) According to the new laws/courts rooting is LEGAL. However so is dropping your phone or spilling water on it, it does void the warranty though.

Not only fraud, but a Felony.

Yes it's legal, but, it doesn't mean Sprint or the insurance company has to honor the warranty on a rooted phone.

Happens often "I lost my phone, heres 100 bucks, a week later "oh crap i found it". After selling it on craigs hard to prove. Usually reserved for when people doing this on large scale to get money from company. They won't investigate a single phone... I doubt it. Do this 100x and then they start asking questions.

Like I said, so is throwing it, spilling watter, dropping it, they state what voids the warranty, legal or not. They just can't sue you for it :) This had to do with Apple indicating that it is ILLEGAL to root because its their copyrighted code. In any case sorry for straying from the topic.


Heres one question that would be ultimately useful and good for sticky: Lets say I broke my phone (or can't even access the screen) how do I do something to hide the fact that I rooted, I am ok with using a magnet to destroy memory (if ti helps). Will a high powered magnet destroy the ROM so at least my tracks are covered? (would be so much easier if there was a HDD :) ) Edit: I know magnets won't work, but we need a way so that you DONT open the phone or make it appear like anything weird happened (other than the lack of data).
