Root "Superuser Permissions" app versus "Superuser" app?

So, I have the app "Superuser Permissions" BUT I don't see it in the Market as even existing. Also, I have been more seeing people mentioning "Superuser" app recently - like OMJ. Well, when you search "Superuser Permissions" in the Market they show the app "Superuser" and not "Superuser Permissions".. what's up with that?

So, I tried to download "Superuser", but I get a Failed Installation app.

That is interesting. I just have the Superuser.apk that comes with the roms.

is the icon for your superuser permissions app a ninja or a skull and crossbones?
 
I rooted before you, so I suspect the process was different. But frankly, I cannot recall how I got "Superuser Permissions" and why it is not in the Market. I wonder if it just died off and "Superuser" is not the defacto SU app. also odd I cannot DL it without it failing to install. odd

looks like a Ninja.. kind of.. not sure WTF that is.. something in a black outfit and looks like he is holding an AR15 rifle actually - some odd red dot and a green single eye? it is certainly NOT that "Superuser" skull and cross bones.

Superuser v2.2 su v2.2-ef is what is says in the app itself

the reason it wont update is cause you are on an old version from before the market updates started.

Flash this in recovery it will give you the newer one that can be updated

is it the same maker, just newer app version or a totally different app? is it any better and is the other one just now defunct?
 
flashed, downloaded Superuser, but still get "Installation Unsuccessful"

EDIT: well I went into my apps and sure enough, it is the Superuser app now. but why does the Market not show it as being installed? Also, next to a few icons it says "UNKNOWN" as the name, and not ROm Manager or TitBU or Root Explorer?

well the update.zip gave you superuser the market had nothing to do with that. Try clearing data on both the market and your superuser app. Then try updating from the market again.

if you clear data on the Market, do you loose all the settings I made by going thru each app and unchecking "allow automatic updating" 1 by 1 by 1

this makes me nervous

Never knew that happened when clearing market data. Easy fix though is to backup your apps before hand and then use titanium to fix the market links. You probably would lose the checkmark for auto updating of each app

superuser has to be in /system to work. Its a lot different than other root apps because it gives permission to all the other root apps.
 
Thanks for this thread. It helped me update my SuperUser Permissions app to avoid a conflict I was having with LEDs Hack and Rockplayer. Cheers!
 
-download the "update.zip" file to your SD card
-boot into recovery (can be done in ROM Manager) or reboot and hold power + X at startup
-once you reboot into recovery you can install that "update.zip" file from your SD card
-reboot phone
 
"Root" can be obtained by (now) various means, albiet those means are all temporary. Whether it's via an attack on the sql (expliod), or overloading adb (rageagainstthecage); these two giving us (temporary) root via adb shell, or using MotoCache1's custom .sbf file to flash SPRecovery and therefore grant temporary root via the recovery system: All those methods only give us temporary 'root' access. 'Root' access is the ability to be able to write to the /system partition on our phones.

As we know, permanent 'root' access is obtained by pushing the 'su' binary to the system and setting the proper permissions. However, if we just left it at that, any app we download to our phone could possibly call 'su' and therefore have root access to our phone without our knowledge.

That is why pushing Superuser.apk is also part of the rooting process, and it doesn't really matter which version you have, it functions the same, but different versions have a different look/ui. What Superuser.apk does is monitor EVERY call for 'su' and therefore require permission for said call. As you know, permission can be granted (and remembered) or denied.

partially true. with the older version I had, and why I started this thread, it was not in the market and would not then get an update notice. So, forcing the loading of the new version got a more up to date version AND would allow for it to be seen in the market and so future updates you would be alerted to. not the case with the older version.
 
So if I have rooted my droid already through the instructions on the XDA site, do I event need to install the superuser app listed in the android market or through the instructions above?
