Backup and Restore New for 2.2

So here's a little tip that's part of Froyo (2.2). Backup and Restore. Apparently, if you need to do a factory reset and wipe the phone, by selecting this in your Privacy settings before the reset, your apps and settings will be restored from Google's servers to their previous state without having to do it all manually f. There's more info on the Moto Forum site here. I hope this actually does what it says it does and helps a few folks out. Anyone try this yet?
 
So it reinstalls everything you had prior to the reset? Apps, phone settings, ringtones, wallpaper, etc? Becasue if that's the case, factory resets won't be such a PITA anymore. An actually usefull Froyo feature! :)
 
Interestingly, I was running the leaked original 2.2 for a little while and eventually SBF'ed back to 2.1. Didn't really think much about the backup/restore feature.

When I decided I wanted to upgrade to 2.3.15, I went through, accepted the sync feature, and started reinstalling apps. Only, a bunch of the apps were registered as having started to download already, and my phone was acting funky. I cancelled a bunch of the downloads without thinking they had been deliberately initiated (I thought there were bugs). At one point, I hit the home button and it dropped me into Launcher Pro - which I hadn't installed at all.

After cancelling so many of the downloads and not being sure what the status of my phone was, I did a factory reset and didn't accept the sync option the next time around, just manually did everything, and then turned on sync.

Kinda wish I had waited the first time around, to see just how extensive the restore was, but it definitely was reinstalling my apps and a bunch of my settings.
 
You've got to be effing kidding me.
This will be so nice when my replacement comes on Monday.

Well it reinstalled my apps and basic setting but not wallpaper and ringtones.
 
Where is the actual RESTORE function? I clicked the backup option under privacy, and I realize that's a toggle, but I assume it'll do it's own backup upon installation. Is it through the backup assistant?

Two different things. Backup Assistant is a Verizon contact backup program on Verizon servers. The Backup and Restore in the Android OS is on Google's servers.

I said I'd update...so,

I didn't use the restore on the new phone, I decided to do a full wipe as soon as I popped the battery in. Smooth as silk today. :cool:

If it was a new phone, what was on it to wipe? :confused:

T'was a refurbed phone, it came loaded with 2.1, and had to be updated to Froyo. It also wasn't properly wiped and reset when I got it...did not boot up the 1st time with the droid setup/walk thru screens, it just turned on and went to the home page right away.
I wanted it clean, so I could muddy it up myself.:p:D

I see said the blind man. Odd that you would get it that way, but then again, nothing they do surprises me anymore. Hope your email attachments work/save properly this time around. (I still can't get my damn compass calibration menu to appear!:mad:)

I don't think so, I think it just grabs all the apps you had from the appstore similar to appbrain. Only if I remember correctly, it auto installs them. I don't think the app data was preserved though, or system apps / data. I still remember having to re-configure much of the phone but I guess some settings must have been saved. Anyone know exactly what this will and won't do?
 
Man this will be an absolute life saver if it works!!! Questions... does it back up your contacts? Because I tried doing the Verizon Back-up Assistant and it only grabbed 44 of my contacts (out of roughly 200)... so I don't know what's up with that. And the other question, what about apps like 'Keeper' and 'Notes'... does it put all the info that's contained in those apps back as well, or just the apps themselves?
 
.... third question, does that 'Factory Reset' in the privacy menu do the exact same thing as the 'Wipe Date/Factory Reset' that you find when booting in safe mode?
 
Gotta say, I've done a factory reset twice, both with these features turned on. They have done absolutely nothing. Phone back just as a new phone out of the ox. I had to reinstall all of the apps manually. YMMV, for my money this feature is worthless.
