this worked perfectly, thanks

did have some problems with widgets for some of the apps disappearing, but reinstalling the apps allowed them to be added again

Thanks, just did this and it worked perfectly and painlessly. Just moved most of my apps over and it saved me 10mb.

I am about to do this right now. Need some help - do you need to perfom steps 1-7 if the USB Drivers are already installed through HTC Sync??

I did this without downloading the drivers as I thought I already had them through HTC sync which was already in my computer. I got the two $. But apps are still going to phone. When I typed the command lines as suggested I got lots of guff after each adb command, is this common? Please help.

It sounds like you didn't type the commands in correctly as the guff will have been the explanation for the commands. Copy and paste the commands into the command window then you can't go wrong. I also believe the commands are case sensitive so this would also stop it from working.

Steve

Thanks Steve!

Did as you said. No Guff this time round. My experience with installing after the "successful" path change as follows:

1. Happy Ball - Went straight to SD :D
2. 4teh Birds - Went to SD but data on Phone :)
3. Talking Tom - Went to phone but was able to transfer to SD. Left a huge amount on phone, about 10 mb :(
4. Raging Thunder - Went to phone and could not be moved

I am back to only having 15 mb space left. I do not want to go lower just to avoid the annoying "low space" warning.

Not impressed. Please let me know if I have done something wrong. If this is the general experience I am mad at HTC for giving me only 133 mb of space for apps. I was not aware of the issue when I bought the phone. Should have done more research. But I will not be conned again and Samsung phones are not as stingy as HTC with internal space.

just one thing
if we do a factory reset , will we have to do this again to get it to work or will it keep it as part of the system like it does with froyo ?
anyone tried it ?

you will have to do it again. But bear in mind, the process will now be much easier as the sdk is already downloaded and extracted.

So assuming you didn't move the sdk folder from the desktop (or wherever you put it) - you can now skip all the way down and start from step 10 :) It takes about a minute from there.

Im still unable to download certain apps anow and updating is failing for anything installed on the SD card.
One particular app that wont download is Alarm Clock Plus V" (free)

If anyone else can try this and see if its just me thats having problems that would be great.

Its not exclusively this app but this is one that i remeber.

Thanks

Nath

I do not get it when people say having problems with update? Does the Phone say you have an update but you are not able to update? I have had n problems yet but then again I have not had any updates!

I have a dilema that some of you may be able to help me with - I am trying to download London Tube app with install selected to 2 (SD). App gets downloaded fine directly to SD and using it is piece of cake. I can alsoe see lots of widgets that I think will be of lot of help on a day like today when transport is in absolute chaos.

I had read in this forum that if you happs widgets stored to SD, at best it will not run properly or worst it may break the phone. Now my problem is when the app is in SD I can see the widgets but it disappears as soon as I transfer the app to phone.

I know I can always change install location and change it back but is there any other solution to this??

I'm having a problem with updates as well

the apps just don't show as being on the phone, so it doesn't offer an update. when you search for the app in the market, it just gives you the option to download it, as if you didn't have it.

I have also found today that my Astrid Tasks and 3G Watchdog widgest have disappeared. The apps are still there, just the widgets.

This happened when I first carried out the process and I reinstalled them and got them back, but this morning they were gone again.

I am having the same problem. It seems like this problem only prop up recently. And its not just you n me only. Anyone got any clue on it?

I tried resetting to default install location to "0" (auto) but still failed. Even reformatting the sd card won't work.

I really appreciate your simple, concise and step by step explanation which just works! Thanks.

At first i can't get the usb_driver which comes with the android sdk working. To work around that, i simply goto the device manager in Control panel, and install the adb driver myself from the "program files/htc/htc driver/driver files/xp_x86/" directory. Presumably, this directory is setup by HTC after you run HTC sync the first time.

Hope this helps for those who have the same problems as me.

Good luck for all

I was just about to try resetting the install location but if that doesnt work either then it looks like this might be a bit of a bigger problem. The weird thing is that i will let me download some apps but not others but wont let me update any of them unless i move them back to phone memory.

I guess noone seems to have any clue why this happens.

Looks like the fix to our storage problems may not be quite as good as first hoped.

Im guessing if formatting the SD card hasnt helped then the only thing you can do is to try a factory reset.

Kinda wish i hadnt done this mod now as i at least used to be able to update even if it was eating my storage space.

Thank you William, very useful help now we have skype available which is a huge file, as is swype.

Just one point, I didn't have the proper Java stuff on the PC and had to download that first.

Secondly in your original post you say you have advanced task manager running constantly and then later near the bottom you say never run a task manager. Can you explain? I know there is a big debate over this issue.

Sorry for the second point. My fault. When I made the guide, being a Noob I though it was a good idea to use a task manager and so when I made the guide I did. But looking around the forums and online etc, I soon realised I shouldn't be using one at all. So I put at the top, never use one and forgot to take out the original bit. So thanks for alerting me - i've now updated the post.

You should never use a task killer because (and I won't go technical as I don't really understand it all to be honest) it breaks all the connections between apps and the phone etc. I suspect that was the reason my first desire broke. There is no need for it on android as the functionality is built right into the operating system unlike on iPhones. It detects which applications aren't in use etc and closes them in the background. Therefore, using a task killer breaks breaks it. Someone may want to clarify.

Hope this helps :)

Hey William!
This is an excellent guide :D
I reposted it in another forum Here
Hope you dont mind ;)

Thanks.

  1. I don't follow, that just links to the android forums page....
  2. As long as you credit it to me, don't copy and paste it under your name and take the credit please!

Alright... I took the pain to do a reset on my phone and redo the tweak. I also reformat my sd card just to be safe. So far it has been fine. So you might want to try do the same.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks so much for that was desperate as I'd nearly run out of space on my phone - keep getting carried away with all these great apps & games & Ive only had the phone for two weeks lol!
