2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

It seems some sites are reporting that you can only get the update through Kies...is this true.

I'd really rather get it over OTA as it's more convient and keeps all my settings, apps, etc...

I am hearing froyo will be a kies only update, you'll probably lose everything.

I've never tried kies I do not know how to use it or what oet is. And what do you mean we will lose everything ate you saying I will lose all of my downloaded apps? Music pictures and movies?

You will lose everything not on your SD card, meaning your phone goes straight to stock and you'll have to reinstall every app, game, tool, launcher, etc...

Gonna be a pain in the butt, but I guess I'll make a list of the apps and stuff i use and just redownload them all when I get Froyo.

It's OTA meaning Over The Air, it's where a mobile carrier like AT&T in this case sends out the update directly to your phone through 3G or wifi if you're connected to a network. If the update is OTA you keep all your apps and stuff, if you have to get it through Samsung Kies, then you lose everything.

Get appbrain from the market, it really speeds that up as it keeps the list for you. Just sync before the update, then download appbrain again after the update, sign in and sync again, then it just takes you through all the permissions screens of your apps and re download and re installs them. It's pretty sweet, I wish they had it back when I was flashing new roms on my G1 every other week like two years ago...

Wow, that's gonna be awesome. Redownload and reinstall all my apps in the push of a button!

Thanks so much s.m.knipe!

Yeah it is very sweet, you still have to accept every permissions page from each app (the page that pops up after you select install in the market- where it tells you what all the app has access to), so there are multiple buttons to press, or rather the same button in succession. Also try out their "fast web installer" app (also free in the market), it lets you push apps to your phone from AppBrain Android Market - find the best Android Apps and Games, which is handy for apps that don't show up in the market for whatever reason (angry birds) for some users, or blocked apps (AT&T doesn't like the tethering apps for rooted users)...

Even if so, your update to jh7 should be limited in time sequence, and since it will most likely be through KIES (unless AT&T happily surprises me) you will probably upgrade to jh7, reboot or whatever, then upgrade to Froyo...

Well I can't even get Kies to work with my phone, so...I hope it's through OTA.

Yeah, KIES was hit or miss when I tested it at my parents house. Try putting it into debug mode, and if that doesn't work, up under the KIES menu in the top left corner try to "restore drivers" while not in debug mode...

Lastly know the KIES mini app (available from Samsung's Captivate support web page) works with the phone in debug mode.

(debug mode is under settings-> applications-> development and is a check box on/off option)

I will be owning a captivate from Rogers starting next week, however they claim they will not release froyo until early 2011. Due to not being on AT&T, the OTA will not apply to me, however does this mean that I will not be able to use kies either seeing as my region is canada? is there any other way I will be able to get froyo for the captivate when it is released?

I used Kies to update to JH7 and I didn't lose any apps, photos, music, homescreen setups or anything else, and it appears that others on this thread have also used Kies for updates without losing anything.

My phone is nor rooted or lagfixed . . . maybe it's just the modified phones that lose data on upgrades through Kies.

Telling people they will lose everything isn't factual.

I'm trying KIES mini now on my phone with debugging on, the program still just says "Please connect your mobile phone".

Update: Just got my phone to work on Kies, not the mini.

I just set touchwiz to default in home switcher and it worked, guess running Kies in Launcher Pro isn't a good idea. Haha.

Any good back up programs ya'll suggest using?

Incidentally, I used Kies Mini to upgrade to JH7 and didn't lose any apps or settings.

Yeah this was mentioned somewhere. Need to set the launcher back to Touchwiz temporarily for the updates to work.

Thanks I'm gonna have to make a list of apps and backup all of my music in the computer then. When it comes out how do I update? Do I go to menu from the home screen and click software update...or do I do something different?

You got it, just hit software update and watch your phone start dripping (or freezing) with frozen yogurt.

When it's released of course. :)

It's quite possible the froyo update will wipe our phones. I remember when my old samsung blackjack II received it's winmo update it wiped everything. BUT I hope not as the backup services provided are underwhelming. I would like to keep my app data without having to hack n' slash. Oh and my home screens the way I had them. Call me lazy but **** these are computers.

Can I say that on this forum? (From reading the rules what I gather is you can swear as long as it's not trolling or targeted at someone)

Okay, well benefits aside, I'm starting to get sick of finding apps on AppBrain that I'm interested in and finding out they're for 2.2 only. So... yeah, if we could get this update any day now that'd be fine thanks very much... =/
