Root ROOTING For Dummies

Thank you. Will I have to mess around with adb to resolve this?

What version of su permissions do you have?

EDIT: the most current version in the market is 2.3.6.1 so if yours is different try downloading the updated version in the market and see if that does the trick

I actually have 2.5.0.4 and have no updates pending.

How do I check the su permissions?

su --version in adb shell didn't work.

Open su permissions and it will show what you have granted su privileges. You can always download the market version and that should update it. Im at a loss. Have you tried to access recovery through the bootloader?

Ah, that. Yes, su permissions confirms that ROM manager has su privileges. I downloaded the app under 3 hours ago, hasn't been an update yet. Do you reckon the latest version's broken? I checked the ROM manager forum and no feedback there so far.

Basic question, am I actually downloading anything when I'm flashing clockwork recovery? If so the server might be down or something?

Well to be honest im not sure what's going on with rom manager... lol with that said when rooting with unrevoked it should have flashed clockwork. So boot into bootloader and see if you infact do already have clockwork. If so until you get rom manager figured out you can flash roms and all the other good stuff manually (the long way which I prefer over rom manager.)

it keeps just saying waiting for device, when it comes to rooting or anything like that, i have terrible luck

Make sure you are NOT connected to unrEVOked when you open the program. Wait for it to ask for the Device then connect your EVO to the Micro USB and to the PC.

Is there a way to backup app data like in an app like a password keeper so you dont have to input EVERYTHING all over again? TIA

Download "app brain" from the market and it will sync all your apps online. Then once you flash a rom simply re download it from the market and it will re download all your apps!

EDIT: And make sure your contacts are backed up with your gmail.

Added your AppBrain trick to the thread. Nice find! (Credited)

I'm a noob to al of this: I have an EVO and really just want wifi-tether while leaving Sense and all my data as is. So if I just root using this guide, will everything stay the same except now I can use w-ifi tether? Thanks in advance!

That is correct. You will keep all your setting and data after root. And yes after you root just instal wifi tether and your good to go!

Ok, so I followed the instructions...everything went "well". Evo3 showed it was "done", but I don't have superuser privs nor can I connect via localhost with telnet.

When I'm in HBOOT, it shows s-off which I think means I'm suppose to be rooted.

So now I'm lost...I'm going to attempt it again right now but I just wanted to get this posted in case I can't get it again...so in the mean time hopefully I can find an answer if this doesn't work again.

EDIT: Did everything step by step again...and still didn't work. No superuser and no localhost connection. Just to add, I did turn off my AV...

Weird. Are you able to access recovery? And also are you on a pc or mac?

And what's the local host connection?

Where do I check for access recovery? I'm on a PC running Windows 7. I also right clicked the revoked software and ran as admin.

Someone in this thread mentioned to download telnet and try to connect to localhost and if you can, then you know you are rooted.

As for superuser permissions. I have a thing in my apps that says Superuser Permissions but when I click it, the page is blank/black. I clicked Menu > Preferences which pops up but I don't think I need to change anything since it wasn't mentioned in the thread.

And the main reason I'm posting this is because the OP says to install ROM manager, so I did:
STEP 2: Run
Open ROM Manager and click Flash Clockwork Recovery. A new APP called Super User will Pop-up. Select Remember and Allow. A Phone Model option will pop-up. Select your current Phone; HTC EVO, and a Progress Bar will start. Allow it to do its thing and say Sucessfully Flashed Clockwork Recovery. This allows you to do a NAND backup.
The underlined red does not happen and only the model option pops up; HTC Evo (CDMA). If I click that then I will receive an error saying it was unable to flash it.

Side note, not sure if this is right, but after the phone boots up without bootloader usb, under the Android phone in the device manager, the driver shows "Android Composite ADB Interface". Not sure if that is normal...or if I have to uninstall that one and install from the custom driver...

EDIT: Ok...so I got it to work. This is what I did:
Went to Superuser Permissions > Menu > Preferences
Clicked "Tap action"
Clicked "Toggle State"

Went back to Rom manager, clicked Flash recovery, and it started working. At the end of the process, it then asked if I wanted to add to superuser permissions, I clicked yes.

Ok if you have the su icon you should be rooted. But lets just confirm that first. Go to the market and download android terminal emulator. Once installed open it and type "su" (without quotes lol) and if it shows up with # you are rooted. If $ shows up you are not rooted. Once we confirm root we will move on

UPDATE:

Added a little section for ANDROID LINGO for those of us who are still not completely familiar with the Android-way.

Will look into this to see why this occurred.
