Root The I borked my SF support group thread

yeah, i think at some point all of us soft-brick or think we do, but the more people it happens to and see what caused it, the more likely you are to avoid it.

Welp, I took one step closer today, doing the same thing as before. You'd think I'd learn.. But then there'd be no one in the support group! Didn't actually have to Odin it, but was restoring Voodoo, it sat for 45 mins, I pulled the battery, and a reset showed the phone with pretty much everything reset - even had to set up my gmail. Odd part is that it was still rooted - reinstalling apps via Titanium Backup right now. Boy do I love backup programs.

your phone *should* stay rooted pretty much no matter what you do to it short of returning it. Even wiping/factory restore hasnt removed root from me and thats wiping data/cache/everything in every possible place.

Even if you odin you should also keep root as I believe the system you push through there is pre-rooted, although some people seem to be missing superuser once completed, but thats easy enough to get.

I always have had to re-root mine after pushing the system through Odin...

really? hmmm...all 4 times i had to odin root was still there but 3 of those times superuser wasnt. could have something to do with how voodoo screws up nandroids and stuff.

I think for a baseline id have to wipe everything from the system to see for me, but given that sk your system was probably closer to stock when doing odin, ill take your word on it :)

Well, it's working great now. Next thing on my list is to rid my phone of TW altogether now that it's possible and safe. I can't wait!!!! I would imagine not only would it help lag, but battery life also.

Well, this certainly sucks. :)

Voodoo worked great. I did notice a slightly snappier phone... just slight but nevertheless...

Tried "Dirrk_lv1200". Now in FC loop hell. Tried to Odin my way out of it following the steps here --> Odin Restore files to get you to stock - xda-developers. Didn't take. It only got me as far as the 'English/Espanol' option screen.

Going to try a restore through Odin once more.

Oh nasty ... That Odin restore should be able to bring the Fascinate back from almost anything. The Galaxy S is a surprisingly resilient phone. Are you flashing all three of those files via Odin, starting with the biggest one (the one over 300 megs)?

And it's possible to have a corrupt download file. Try re-downloading that large file again, and try downloading it not over wi-fi if possible. I know that's getting extremely paranoid, but the first time I downloaded it, it was somehow incomplete even though the web browser said it downloaded fine. I tried flashing it several times. It would get to 99% and sit there until the phone would finally time out and just shut itself off. If there's any corruption in the restore file you downloaded, even if the download completes, it can make your phone go wonko.

Play it super safe on this one. Stability is of tantamount importance on a device you may have to call 911 on some day. You gotta know it's going to work.

I had more than one stock Eris, one I tested with NO APPS INSTALLED, that had this killer dialer issue. I would click on someone's name to call them, and it would call someone else. I could even type the number in BY HAND and it would call the wrong person. It would suck to dial 911 and get the bank.

Yes, all three starting with the biggest file first. Even did the .pit file after those three.
Somehow, in between the FC's I was able to skip past all the activation screens, mount and get a copy of nandroid in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. Then I found out that I had to start over again and copy over a new update.zip for the CWM to work.

I went into CWM Recovery and did a backup and restore. It did it but I'm still getting the FC loop crap. (Man, I wish I was told to use the 'back' capacitive button to 'select' when in CWM Recovery... I'd use the home button and the screen would go blank with all the buttons lit up and I'd sit there for 15-20 minutes thinking that it was doing it's thing and to just be patient. Good God Almighty... I swear to God.. )

Don't know what I'm going to do now except to keep doing anything I can, lol

Going to try Odin again, see if that works this time. If not, I'll re-download those files and try again.

trust me, it was CWM recovery, but everything I do now has me facing the FC loop of hell at every turn... :(

Going to try it all again, starting with the nandroid recovery, wish me luck.

Hey, before doing all this, did you make sure and undo the lagfix?? You gotta do that or your Fascinate will not be happy with all the restoration attempts.

Yes, I knew I had to. I remember going through steps to get rid of Voodoo before recovering but just saw 'voodoo_kernel_0.2.zip'; saw the file and folder last time I was in CWM Recovery... If I in fact did get rid of voodoo would that not delete both of those??

This might be the problem...

I can't even do a nandroid recovery as it gives me a ''files not found'' whereas it was found and executed a couple times prior... hmm.

Ok, to remove Voodoo, is it 'disable lagfix', 'disable-lagfix' or 'disable_lagfix' and is it a file or folder or both? File or folder, do I put it in the Voodoo folder as per the dev's example?

Can someone confuse me further please? :)

Do exactly as the dev wrote in the thread and reboot the phone. You create a folder named disable_lagfix in the voodoo folder, and upon reboot it is disabled. I gotta hit the sack. That darned work you know. Good luck!

I had already created two folders in the Voodoo folder and on sd root. Apparently that did the trick. I tried another nandroid recovery and it worked.

Unborked.

Whew. :)

well, I ''think'' I'm unborked... I went through the activation without any hiccups or a single FC. Went into the market to start downloading all my old apps but it keeps telling me, "Sorry, there's not enough space to install this item". lol

30 more minutes and I'm going to bed.

So Im up for the bathroom and had to check on you. :)
Good work my friend.:D Steps 7-10 all in an hour or two. Knowing you however you're skipping step 11, as some Platinum's do. ;)
Alright now I gotta get back to sleep. Alarm in 4hrs

Uh-oh you must have the 0 internal memory problem. This may or may not help {FIXED} :) 0.00 internal storage problem - xda-developers I'd stay up and help but I really can't right now :( fighting a cold and I must get some zzzzzzzzzz

Yes, I will skip step 11. But I will go to sleep first. I will skip it when I'm awake.
