why is it funny? do you view it as older tech and the Epic is newer tech and should outsell the Evo? They're both very capable phones and slates seem to have a wider appeal in general. Look at all the carriers. Slates outnumber sliders. There's nothing funny about it unless you were just trying to make a dig which you pretty much failed.

No lol.. im talking about the way the Epic people are constantly gloating on their "specs" but dont seem to realize that the average user could care less about bench tests. Its obvious that the Evo, even though older is STILL more popular.

BTW I think you tried a little too hard with that reply.

@heavychevy:
I don't think arguing quality of a product based on sales figure matters if there is hype involved. You can't deny there is a lot of hype surrounding the HTC Evo 4G, being advertised as the first 4G (though fake) phone, ever.

Its like arguing Wii is the better console because it sold more than both XBOX360 and PS3. Consumers like to buy new things to see what the hype is all about. Evo is no exception.

In terms of being solid, I feel Droid X has a better build, despite the '4G' (again FAKE) tag, but Evo probably sold better.

You may also want to read what is wrong with your argument:
Argumentum ad populum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quick snippet:
This type of argument is known by several names,[1] including appeal to the masses, appeal to belief, appeal to the majority, appeal to the people, argument by consensus, authority of the many, and bandwagon fallacy, and in Latin by the names argumentum ad populum ("appeal to the people"), argumentum ad numerum ("appeal to the number"), and consensus gentium ("agreement of the clans").

Oh please, the hype was mostly internet. Most people hadn't even heard of the EVO when it released and there wasn't a commercial for it until after release, or at least that's the first time I saw it. There was as much or more hype for the Galaxy phones (which cover several carriers) as the EVO by itself.

Actually the EVO vs the Epic is more like the 360 vs the PS3. The PS3 is the spec queen and the 360 is the one that everyone bought because it was more user friendly. The PS3 had DISMAL sales in part due to how much it cost, and fell short of the 360 in it's game diversity and online play. The part that involved the PEOPLE.

The fact that you call 4g "fake" shows what you are about. It's still FAR faster internet than anything coming out of a Droid X. I could show you my 8k+ download speeds if you like.

How is calling a fake 4G showing me what I am about? Its going in the right direction but it isn't 4G.

You know T-Mobile is starting to call their HSPA+ 4G as well, and for good reasons. If your competitors lies, might as well too to even the play level.

You can achieve similar speed on T-Mobile's HSPA+ -- but, regardless, there's nothing out there touching true 4G speed out there, or even being deploy.

The funny part about the whole '4G' drama going on is I doubt any of the carriers will sue the other for false advertisement, because if they do the money they invested into upgrading to '4G', and the money already went into advertising the fake 4g networks will be wasted.

I'm surprised you don't take into account Verizon's call quality. Overall I think Droid X is the better phone out of the two, and without the issues such as light leakage, screen separation, etc. And then there's battery life. Droid X is one of the best out there.

Well now, we aren't talking about the Droid X are we? I'd honestly take both the Evo and Epic over the Droid X. The Droid X does nothing at all for me, but that's why choices are great.

Droid X -- better processor/graphic, no issues with screens and superior battery life. I'll take Droid X over Evo any day. Out of the many issues out there, Droid X has the least possible bad scenarios on what can happens to your phone.

But issue is Verizon is the most expensive network (easily the best in NYC for voice quality) or I'll jump over in a heartbeat.

Personally, to me, comparing Evo vs Epic is super weird considering one has keyboard and the other one doesn't. My friends swear by keyboards and won't consider anything without one. But I have the Vibrant so meh, but I can see keyboard useful at times.

for me....it ended up basically being touchwiz vs sense.

touchwiz is terrible, i can't stand it. htc sense im in love with, so im going with the evo. it was a close battle, and i know i can root the phone and make it stock android but i want a phone that i love straight out of the box

Just look at the way the two ate being marketed. In the last two weeks I have seen one 15 sec commercial for the epic yet everyday I see at least 3 commercials for the EVO coming from HTC, Sprint, and now best buy is pushing the EVO. There are more ads both on tv and the internet for the EVO then even the iPhone so if anything this gives me a sense of security in the EVO because I know that it will be a number one priority when it comes to updates development and of course gingerbread when it lands.

alright alright alright....
both phones suck!!!

nah jk
I had my evo since launch day. Awesome fast phone.
Be that as it may.. I am one who gets tired of my toys
after lil bit. Wanted to try something new. The screen is what turned me onto the epic
Showing 16m colors, as my 17" Dreamcolor display on my laptop (made in colaboration for Dreamworks Studios to display most accurate color. Desktop Dreamcolor monitors display over 1 Billion colors) and I use that to my advantage when I do work in my CS5 and Adobe Lightroom 3.
**what i loved about it
HTC
sense
big ole screen
android 2.2
sex appeal
kickstand
hdmi
all touch form
HUGE DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
durable (dropped it ear height and survived magnificantly)
takes awesome pics (OK video) dual flash (albeit tooo bright in some cases)
slim
the phone worked as it was designed to
**what i do not like
tug of war with hotspot/4g I use this alot all day every day
cant have charging with notifications
studders alot, especially on 4g

I only had the epic for a few hours and haven't broke surface yet (i have not yet installed the MR let)
but so far
**what i love about it
SAMOLED!!!
super blacks and super colors
sex appeal
awesome pics (not better than evo) and video w/ sound! (even with no flash, epic hands down superior on video!)
graphics processing
Lots of camera options
great strong vibrator (;
native divx support
16gb storage card, sd card adapter; needed this!, cool headphones,
seems just as fast as my evo on android 2.2
better version of swype (maybe the settings i had on the evo version made it annoying)
dedicated camera key
quick access to vita system components through notification bar (myspace as option to feed sync)
**what i dont like
no gps update weather clock
3g speed sucks for upload (luckily I get the most excellent 4g speed at home.get anywhere from 2mbps to 13.5mbps rate. just now pulled a 9.3mbps writing this)
slow charging (drains playing on it and or while talking, during charge also, takes years to charge)
no hdtv out
moving parts (slider/keyboard, I have not and will not use the keyboard)
android 2.1

If it werent' for the GPS issue with the epic, I would be considering it as a successor to my Evo in June. Even with 5 months with the Evo, tried all sort of keyboard apps, I still like typing with a hardware keyboard. I use Docs to Go a lot at work, and I'm sure I'll be more productive with a hardware keyboard. However, my top priority is GPS accuracy where the Evo is a lot better performance in that respect.

In the end, it's the features that each one of us wants that will dictate which phone is better. A best phone out there is the phone that will provide everything it's owner wants. :)

There is nothing fake about Sprint or Tmobile or any other carrier calling their service 4g. The ITU is irrelevant, or perhaps better termed unheard of to/by consumers. Nomenclature adopted is by no means binding, nor does the use of same terms require any type of qualification. The ITU gets together and sets goals for international standardization and advancement of technology and are not a regulatory body by any means.

Its not as though any carrier is falsely advertising or obtaining some undue benefit by using the term 4g. No one bought any device expecting data rate as per the ITU definition. Virtually no-one bought any device even knowing what the ITU was or what the ITU's definition's spec was. Wimax HSPA+and LTE are significant improvements over previous implementations of mobile data, more than worthy of being called 4th generation.

While the differences between current 4g and what the ITU's has defined may be worthy of a footnote, the intent and purpose of each arent even in the same ballpark. Calling it fake and labeling it as lies is seems great but really just looks like taking a morsel of techblog and extrapolating that into a conversation as 'knowing' what '4g' is 'supposed' to be.

I agree with this. As I've said the people in the ITU need to be fired, b/c demanding a 100mbps gap between what qualifies for 3g and what qualifies for 4g is absurd.

You all are being dumb about 4G. ITU is the one that been certifying your 1g, 2g, 3g, and now suddenly they are unqualified? Way to jump on the fake 4g bandwagon.

I'm glad T-Mobile jumped into the fake 4G sausage fray. Now that HSPA+ is '4G' we can look at another angle to see how stupid the whole 4g thing is. I don't look at any of them as 4G.

Also love the bonus of "they're unheard of by consumers", therefore they are not qualify. I doubt your typical consumers know what IEEE is or what they do -- you know, the one who created your '4g' Wimax.

here is my speedtest
4g seems pretty damn real to me...

I'd love to hear your insight on that, maybe I'll learn something. Love to know what you think their impact has been here. Shoot, since their "certifications" are so important, what did they certify as 3g speed?

IMO, being peeved over the use of the term 4g is pretty dumb, especially considering the the "standards" were set by a domestically irrelevant body, and as Iowa pointed out, represent an unrealistic jump in performance.

ITU is to IEEE is what the U.N. is to NATO

Yeah, I see heavychevy's point clearly now. (inserted snide comment here, but thought better of it, consequently edited it out:D)

Yep, guess you're right. Everytime someone's network doubles in speed, whether to 1 Mbps to 2Mbps or 1bit to 2 bit, we'll increment it up by 1G. Each network with its own standard. Certainly the way to go.

And you downplay IEEE. Good lord...

So do you think a 100mbps jump makes any Sense? No it doesn't. Especially when we
are judy barely getting fiber that fast.
ITU is nuts.

Makes perfect sense to me. If you want your network to be a 4G network, invest in your infrastructure and reap the reward down the line.

Try 5. And our country won't be the first one. Most likely Japan or some other non-backward nation that will hit true 4G speed.

But you can close your eyes and claim our speed is just as good in advertisement as Japanese! Their DSL is better than our fiber optic.
