Froyo Over/Under

My concern is that Samsung will release Frodo without updating Kies .... Kies is supposed to be the default "flagship" connection. Up to now Kies can at best be considered an incompetent blunder.

As some of you may know I have two Captivates.

One I've left un-rooted, but have highly optimized now. It's been just great.

So I bought a second one to use as my test / mod / lab rat phone... :)

I just finished debugging my Froyo install a few days ago and it's working just fine. Yet that said, I must admit it's not that impressive of a difference over the really well sorted out Eclair 2.1 that my original is running.

Actually it's fun to have the two to compare, as otherwise it would not be so obvious that there is less speed increase with Froyo than I had expected. That proves that either my expectations were too high, or that 2.1 is better than many give it credit for.

Next Up? Gingerbread.

EWE... I never did like the taste of that stuff...

Cheers...

A lot of folks ask if GPS performance is better on froyo. Can you weigh in on that since you have 2 devices?

I'll take that bet, but I'm a couple of quatloos short. However, my friend Mr. Harabe in Nigeria will be very happy to deposit a large sum of money in your checking account if you'll just wire him your information and pay a small, reasonable customs fee.:p

whatever u say. these custom roms are far better then stock rom even for 2.1.....and ofcourse its big task to make custom rom by few people so u might get few bugs...Samsung is a huge company but still couldnt come up with a buggy free or any kind of froyo rom

so stop whining buddy and go for custom rom....atleast u will have froyo and stable rom with bugs than useless Stock rom 2.1 with bugs...

Stable? Are you kidding. I joined this forum just to back up sremick. I have been a custom rom junkie and XDA follow back when the original XDA phone came out which ultimately led to the XDA forum development.

Having customized several WinMo phones I am not at all squeamish about customizing my Captivate. But after reading the Android rom forum the bugs are just not worth it. Cutting edge is one thing. Hanging over the edge and dangling by a thread is another thing entirely. These custom roms while sounding enticing do not justify the bugs that come along for the ride.

3gandroid pretty much confirms what I have been thinking and I have read in other forums and posts on XDA. 2.2 is good but not evolutionary enough to take the alpha plunge. And lets face it. These are alpha builds we are dealing with. A beta should have minimal bugs.

When I see an Energy or Dutty Android rom I might change my mind but right now I am just going to settle with my fully functional working phone (minus buggy GPS) until the official release comes out.

Not everyone likes to run unfinished, buggy beta code on their Captivate. That's like saying Firefox 4 "is here".

As my favorite quote from The Shining move - "Words of wisdom Loyd, words of wisdom" (replace Loyd with sremick).

I do mind a limited bug list with my custom rom but XDA Android rom forum just seems like a landmine of bugs and broken features. Just for the sake of being cutting edge.

I know how it goes. When folks run the latest custom rom image people get excited and glow over how great it is. Notice how everyone either starts with how great the rom is and then dumps their laundry list of bugs or end their laundry list of bugs with "phone doesn't work but otherwise this rom is great."

I have learned the hard way to take any review of a custom rom with a grain of salt. Especially these Android roms.

FWIW - on my Evo I prefer to run a version of the stock rooted rom.

All the advantages of the manufacturer's distribution (stability, etc) - all the advantages of root.

I surely hope such an option becomes available for you all.

And dario69 - Welcome to the forums!

And will stand by this - you can't take others' word for Froyo performance. It really depends on what apps and what mix of apps you tend to run - in my experience, you can see little to no performance improvement to large performance improvements.

Overall, though, it's the subtle mix of feature enhancements and an overall "tightness" to the user experience that I enjoy most on Froyo - they add up to a better experience. I really like the updated google search tool, and I like the updated photo gallery for 2.2 (although - I don't know what gallery you're given on a Captivate, stock or custom) - but those are example improvements.

So - it's not a bad revision update at all.
