NO lie i swear, i met this guy today that had a DX, so naturally i asked if he got the most recent update he was like uhh no. how do you do that? so as he handed me his phone i went to system update and noticed his DX was still running 1.1 sumthing

i just stopped and was like how long have you had this? A couple of months, how people can have this phone without being a "tech" of sorts idk given im not the most advanced person but DAMN...

ok story done you may thank me now
not sure what for but it works

that makes no sense since the DX never had a 1.anything on it. it was shipped from day one with 2.1....
not saying your lying, just wondering if he had something (ROM or build.prop edit) that makes it read 1.whatever

The same thing happened to me, yesterday. I saw a guy with a DX in the gym. He was still on 2.1. I updated his phone for him. I didn't bother going into rooting. ;) I did recommend AF to him, though.

That's why this site is so important. I can do most novice things and some things a little more advanced, but these smart phones are getting so advanced. Updating is usually pretty easy though. That guy needs to keep up a little better if he wants the most out of his phone.

To be honest, if you buy a device, and are completely happy with everything it does, who cares if you never update it? Not everyone is into the whole 'keeping up with the Joneses'. If they are as completely non-tech oriented as you're saying they are, then the updates probably hold nothing of value for them. Flash? They'd probably have no clue what do even do with it. Improved gaming? Why would they care. Smoother UI? Doubtful they use the UI enough to notice.

Some people truely believe if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Exactly my point, if I would have thought about it i would have taken a picture with my phone.

No i don't mean 2.1 i meant 1.1 i have no clue how it was there or where he bought his phone from.... I am pretty sure he didn't have Root since A. the update went off without a hitch and installed (it was a very long line at the post office) B. he didn't even know how to update his phone.

So maybe my thoughts originally were that he bought the phone from another person that possible had rooted or something and they went back to a 1.1 OS

I wish that i had a better explination or at least had more time with his phone to figure out how in the hell it was on his phone but just like you guys/ girls i am like WTF and clueless...

Edit: Sorry i did forget to mention he come join AF and learn how to do stuff on his phone.

Also i do remember him having the older style "box type" arrow for the link to the apps if that sheds any light on this.

He truly was but you are right he was happy with it. Even after i explained the updates and what not he was still just content... as opposed to me the second i got Flash i was online playing games...

Even stranger, Verizon pushes out those updates, and after a while, it must install. You don't have the option of not installing after a few dialog boxes pop up.

Very curious.

my friend had an update request on his droid 2 for over a month... it downloaded it but every time it asked him to install it (once a day he said) he press no (or not now or whatever)

I'm still voting that it somehow had a build.prop edit on the phone... he may not have done it but someone did... like I said, the droid X never had 1.anything on it (unless maybe it was a testers phone from before the phone was released)
they were shipped out on the release day with 2.1

Yep, he definitely has something modifying his build.prop, whether it's a simple edit or someone installing something custom on his phone.

It is literally impossible for him to have an official 1.x build because 1.x was never made for this device. It just wasn't.

Well, the people here are here to learn more about their phones. The people out there don't know much about their phones. When I help them, they are grateful.

Exactly I don't know how it was there. But you would think if he knew how to do anything he wouldn't have let me update his stuff and jack it up for him.

This is why I posted this, I'm just at awe at how it was there

I called Verizon TS and asked them what would happen if I didn't update. I didn't want the Madden bloatware. I was told you could refuse the update for about a week and then it would install itself.

After a while, it doesn't give you the option anymore, it becomes a mandatory install and does it in the background. The casual user has no control to not install the update. I don't think the update lasted a month, but it may have. Don't know exactly what the time was, or when Verizon forces them, but they do.

Yep. Although I think you can keep postponing the update for longer than a week.

If you root, you can just remove the updater APK and it won't update for you anymore.

So pretty much what is your guy's thoughts? I was smokin crack or the owner b4 him did something with the phone?

It was defiantly at least a month. just sayin

I think it would have had to have been the previous owner if the guy didnt seem to be "tech savy"
ok maybe not HAD TO HAVE been... but its my thought.
unless you smoke crack... then yeah id say you were smokin crack :D
