Root Rooted Apps: must have list?

bgrutter

Android Enthusiast
This may seem a bit odd, but I'm curious what apps those that have rooted would recommend. As yet, I've only installed Titanium but was considering keyboard manager.

So, any suggestions for what I should consider installing?

rom manager, wireless teether, root explorer, astro file manager, setCPU

these + titanium are the ones I use most

Thanks for the quick responses. Would you all mind adding a quick blurb for what each app does? Nothing too detailed, just sort of what primary use(s) each app has. Once a decent list is established, I'll try and patch it into the first post for future reference.

  • Titanium Backup (Free/Paid) - Create restore points (scheduled or not) to revert to a previous setup.
  • Astro File Manager (Free/Paid) - View all files both on the phone or SD card (similar to Windows Explorer)
  • etc...

Adfree- removes ads in programs.
Auto killer memory optimizer- helps the android manage its memory.
Setcpu-allows you to control your cpus frequency.

Root explorer, Adfree Android, Cache Mate, setCPU, Wireless Tether, drocap2

This above but I would add Titanium

  1. Titanium Backup (Pay for Pro, but you can get free)
  2. SetCPU (Free on XDA forums but donate because this is an awesome application)
  3. Root Explorer (Paid)
  4. ROM Manager (Get the Pro, but you can get the free version)
  5. Astro File Manager
  6. AdFree (MUST HAVE)
  7. And last but not least, ANGRY BIRDS!

  • Auto Killer - Would this be helpful in avoiding the "Low Space" warning I've gotten 5+ times. I've had to factory-reset each time. One of the reason I've rooted. Hoping I can take control of such annoyances this way.
  • SetCPU - What excatly does this do? CPU frequency? Of course I can make educated guesses at what that would accomplish (alter the speed and potential refresh of the the processor), but what does it actually do to help performance? Not questioning, just hoping to optomize my gains from such applications. No point in installing if I don't know what to do with it.
  • Root Explorer - Is this something that you guys use often? Seems like the only time I would need access to Root is when connected to my PC. Am I missing something?
  • ROM Manager - I'm assuming this allows you to swap out Roms sans-PC. Does it allow you to have multiple Roms installed so that you can check them 'side-by-side'?
  • AdFree - I believe I will be getting all over that ASAP.

Sounds like disk space, I've never seen that warning. Auto killer manages RAM memory not disk space.

Over clock and under clock, from what I've read 1.19 is as fast as anyone has pushed it, but was unstable. At stable over clocks there is not much performance boost, from what I've read.

But underclocking will give your batter life a boost. Some custom kernels claim to help battery, but I haven't seen it yet.

Root Explorer - Is this something that you guys use often?

browse the file system with root privileges on the phone.

ROM Manager - I'm assuming this allows you to swap out Roms sans-PC.

Yes, after rooting you only need a pc to transfer new roms to the phone. ROM manager just gives an easy interface for flashing roms. select the rom then it does the rebooting and flashing and done. You can also download new roms from it. It didn't' work with my phone.

AdFree - I believe I will be getting all over that ASAP:

Just remember some of the cool free apps depend on those ads to fund development, their payment is based on how many times they load.

DikcoDan what settings to you have for setCPU.? I have tried it out and have taken advice from someone on this forum but it doesn't appear to make much difference. The best I have come up with on a Quadrant reading is about 1613 with Performance setting.

Any help appreciated.

I actually stopped using it a while ago, as there wasn't enough gain to make it worth my while once the newer kernel source came out. I had OC'd to 1.15 for a while getting scores around 1700 - 1800, but there was really no noticeable real world performance improvement. Benchmarks are great for bragging rights, but are pretty useless to gauge actual performance.

ShootMe is a really nice screen cap application if your domain doesn't have to built in screen cap function (such as MIUI).

Same here. I don't use any task killers. After everything I've read more harm than good comes from them.

To the guy above the post that you're reading right now, SetCPU allows you to over and underclock. Not sure where you heard otherwise. Kernels open up the capabilities but SetCPU allows you to get there. I'll also agree that I have yet to see a Kernel that helps with battery life.

IDK how much you tool around with your phone, but Root Explorer is a must have for anyone who tweaks their Android and messes with stuff all the time. It will allow you to mount the internal file system as R/W (Read/Write) which enables you to delete, edit, copy and paste stuff.

Haven't had this issue. I always download updates from SkyRaider through ROM Manager over Wifi and it works wonderfully. Also, quick and painless way to try new ROMs without the computer and to flash Clockwork.

I have to just comment on this last one. For one, all the apps I use on my phone are Pro version. Yes, ads make money for app developers, look at Rovio (Angry Birds). They're having huge success with it. But just like ABP on FireFox on the home computers, when I am surfing the web I cannot stand ads. I can't even remember the last one I clicked on.

You said setCPU only underclocks, and doesn't overclock. This is false. There's no angle.

setCPU doesn't allow you to overclock...the kernel is what allows it, setCPU is what controls it

if you download only setCPU, it will not overclock which is what I said in my post...how is this false?

Dude "FONT INSTALLER IS AWESOME. Tons of fonts. Pick your font, hit instal, then reboot and every word in your phone will be in that font

Your post simply said,

SetCPU only allows you to underclock, not overclock

That statement is completely false.

This is a quote from the setCPU dev.

SetCPU is a CPU speed tweaking application for Android. More specifically, it allows control of certain aspects of the Linux cpufreq driver, allowing for overclocking, underclocking, or tweaking speeds and settings on many Android devices. It will work with most if not all rooted Android 1.5/1.6/2.0/2.1/2.2 builds on supported devices.

I just want to make sure that the proper information is being set here for others. The whole point of setCPU is to OC/UC the CPU.

Joe - it says Font Installer requires 'Busyboot+Root+NAND unblocked Device Required'. What is NAND and how is it unblocked?

I don't know I didn't do anything special to get it to work it worked on my rooted eris and now it works on my rooted incredible Navigating the application is a bit tricky though first you pick which font you want from the alphabet on top then you tap that white strip down on the bottom Scroll through it until you find your font Tap it then tap install fonts then reboot
