what do you use your HDMI cable for (EVO)?

Not trying to nitpick here but... hdmi offers the highest video resolutions and highest bandidth of any video connector. The trouble most people have with it is determining whether or not their htpc is compatible with hdcp standards. The only other connector that came close to competing was firewire for video, but good luck finding a new tv with that interface.

I think he was refering to other video transport technologies that aren't really available on the consumer market yet... such as SDI, HD-SDI, Dual Link HD-SDI, etc...

I am also not sure if HDMI supports emerging high end video standards/resolutoins such as 4K.

How do you use the hdmi cable to view videos that you recorded??

Plug cable into phone and tv, then start playing the video and it will output to the tv.

Do you have to have wifi connection to view YouTube videos through HDMI?

No, it will work on 3g or 4g too, but wifi is usually faster.

Just attempted to rent a video through Blockbuster and it says, "Please note: HDMI playback is not supported at the time".

Looks like I will not use the app now. I was thinking about it but now I will wait to see how the Netflix app works. I don't think I can sit thru an entire movie on my phone.

I'm hoping the Netflix app will work as well as the PC. Their HD feed is 3800kbps at 720p. The Evo can output this fully so in theory the EVO could deliver comparable quality, that is if they don't cripple it or the EVO doesn't consistently drop frames.

The only use I can think of for the HDMI cable is to watch a video in my phone to a friends house, but then again, I think I would just bring the DVD/Blueray instead of wasting all that time and effort to rip, convert and save to my phone. :)

Can I use the cable to transfer audio to my TV when listening to Pandora, Rhapsody, or my own MP3s?

I use my hdmi cable to listen to music. I've listened to Pandora, and mp3s stored on my SD card using powerAMP and doubleTwist, both players available for download from the Market. I'm sure other players would work as well.

Audio through hdmi isn't supported so you're on your own, but for me it was as easy as getting the music playing on my phone and then plugging the hdmi cable into my phone and tv. Works fine.

Although I've had my EVO for months now and had my HDMI out for a month or 2 as well, today was the first day I actually used the thing, lol.

It was great, I thought the output would work a bit better but its great looking at videos from vacations on my bigscreen. Even better watching videos from youtube. I think its a useful feature that I'll actually use again in the future, but I do wish there were more options for it.

I saw a thread about someone wanting to output their navigation application somehow (didn't mention HDMI specifically). That got me thinking if this was something that could be done via HDMI.

No, it's not. Unfortunately, the only thing you can view through the HDMI output are videos and pictures stored on the phone, and youtube.

Pretty lame that they locked it down like that, but maybe they'll open it up in a future update.

No, you can watch ANY video on your PC on the phone and using HDMI out with VLC Stream and Convert. I watch old Mythbusters episodes every night using this and it works flawlessly.

That's pretty cool I guess but not worth the trouble to me. I have a PS3 and an Xbox 360, both of which stream any video off my computer without walking over to the tv and plugging my phone in.

I guess if you don't have any type of DLNA or networked device connected to your tv, and you don't have any way to connect your pc to your tv, then that would be a cool option.

Still though, it doesn't do what we all want (HDMI mirroring). We want to surf the web on our tv's, work on docs, and so on.

Great find though.

can you share your vlc/converter app settings please? I can get it to play the audio but not the video through hdmi.

oh wait...does vlc/the app convert .avi files to h264 or mp4 or whatever? or do I need to convert the file with handbrake first?

duh. I think I'm gonna try that

eta. yep that was the issue. ah-duh. so everybody, vlc with the above app does indeed stream your home files via hdmi. pretty awesome, and it's free. Might not have to buy subsonic after all...

there is a reported bug in the process, for anybody who tries this...apparently you have to have your wifi radio turned on, even if you are not using wireless, for the app to connect to your server. weird, but it works.
