Root Obsidian beta released

Ok, about to restore my nandroid. When the bugs are squashed, this ROM will be awesome...

My thoughts exactly Fab. Running this ROM is rather sad in a way because its so blazing fast it shows you what this device is truely capable of. Then it pisses you off that Moto locked down the bootloader like they did, because when you look at it, the bugs may never get worked out of it, we just don't know.

Things over at Ultimate Droid were really heating up in the DX section because RC3 was rumored to be dropping any second, and there were supposed to be some major bug fixes in it. Well seconds turned into minutes, which turned into hours, which turned into days... then things got real dead, real quick. It seemed as though BlackDroid had run into some sort of road block he just couldn't get around, so he dropped it. We didn't get any sort of update about it except to say he had gotten ahold of gingerbread and was working on a ROM using it.

If UltimateDroid or Obsidian ever work the GPS and video/camera bugs out, that will be an extraordinary day indeed!

This is pretty awesome. I bet a lot of you guys don't remember the ol' 2.0 rotary lock ;)

Just saw it yesterday on the just released Fascinate AOSP.:D Which oddly has the same major bugs as this ROM (not knocking it just saying)
Haven't flashed an X ROM in some time but I love the Fascinates AOSP so this is probably just as good. dnloading now

I notice there is an Audio option. Does it have a legit Equalizer? I've been dying for one since I use my phone for audio extensively.

Well installed but I have no apps or even a market app. So how do I get crap on this phone? How do you access recovery to restore my backup when I'm done playing? I do not have a reboot recovery option.

whats the latest spf and rsdlite file for kernel 2.6.32.9 ?
or tell me how to get market on this phone so I can download some apps ?

You can flash back and forth between Obsidian and another ROM

Here's how:

1) If you are in obsidian you need to make a backup. Use the power menu to reboot->recovery.

2) Backup as if you are creating a nandroid for any other ROM.

3) Flash your nandroid from ApeX, Fission, GummyJAR, Tranq, RubiX, stock etc.

4) To get back to your obsidian backup, you cannot simply flash the nandroid.
you must wipe data/cache and flash the obsidian-2.0.0-update.zip, THEN flash your obsidian nandroid made in step 2

This is because obsidian requires a modified /preinstall partition to hijack the boot process. A clockwork recovery backup does not back this up, so simply flashing the nandroid without flashing the stock obsidian-2.0.0-update.zip file will put you into a boot loop.

Hope this was clear. See this thread on XDA forums post 27 for more info.

EDIT: Looks like it doesn't matter anymore. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10172817#post10172817

Obsidian 2.0.1 fixes this issue and plays nicer with the recovery backup process. No need to flash the update.zip before going back to obsidian.

Piiman, the gapps download was a separate file. It has all the proprietary Google apps in it.

Install it from the built-in clockwork, which you hold down power, reboot, then hit recovery.

thats the problem Fab I can't get to the built in recovery. I have no reboot recovery option when long pressing and when I hold home and power I just get the old moto recovery. Is there another? :(

Oh wait! I just picked up the phone and it said "this will reboot your phone" and had the recovery option. lol I thought I had turned it off an hour ago. Never mind! Iz good now

Huh, that's really strange.

I guess you can bootstrap recovery and see if that will reboot into recovery for you. Beware that it will most likely overwrite Obsidian's hijacking process, so that will never boot up again.

Meaning, you'll want to get whatever you want done in recovery when you first boot into it.

If that doesn't work, then SBF may be the only way out.

Thanks for the detailed reply. But I had a small problem loading it and thought I may have had a messed up install and looking for another way to restore

I'd still like to know the latest sbf file I need if I bork this thing.

2.3.320 is the latest I believe. the .340 is the same bootloader but I think there is just a system only SBF for it. Are you currently on the OTA or .320 leak?

If you are on the OTA you need the .340 system only SBF. Team Blackhat app has it.

With all the serious bugs currently, (no GPS, no camera), why would we (as of this release) prefer this ROM to GummyJAR? It looks like GummyJAR has all the speed and most of the benefits of Obsidian without the giant bugs....

I can see this work paying off big time, and a whole new wave of ROMs that circumvent the Moto boot process entirely AFTER the bugs are worked out... but as of right now are there any major benefits to outweigh the major bugs?

OTA? lol I haven't taken an OTA ever. Can't trust'em:D I did the .320 leak
this is the current full spf I have VRZ_MB810_2.3.32_1FF_01. I waited to do the leak until this was released so isn't it the one I need? my bootloader is 30.04

It's Beta build. No one is telling you to use it.

.320 is fine. That's what I am on. That looks like the correct file name. 30.04 is the bootloader for .32 and .34.

Quick question. If/when they fix the bugs would this mean we won't have to wait on motorola for say gingerbread or future android OS updates?

Yeah I am very interested in trying this ROM. I love the gingerbread look, but I really would love to go back to the aosp look.

2.0.1 is a huge improvement for me. whatever process was draining battery and hogging cpu has been fixed.

I'm using GummyJar until the kinks have been ironed out as well. Still as fast as it is, it can't touch the real deal. Yes indeed, why would you choose this ROM over the likes of GummyJar or Apex, which are both fast... AND work properly?

The answer is obviously you wouldn't... YET! They've put up the beta up to give us a taste of what's on the horizon. And personally, this is the most excited I've been over the DX since it was on its way to my house in the mail! When these ROMs are complete you won't be sticking with GummyJar or Rubix or any of them other guys... cuz they'll be basing their ROMs on this bad boy. It's just way too good.

And don't worry about hurting Fab's feelings, hell he himself said he's switching over once it's complete. Ain't that a big enough hint for ya?

It does have a ton more audio options. Ill try to remember to post a screen in a few minutes
