Root ROOTING For Dummies

Ok, help a newbie please....I'm trying to root (obviously) and I feel like I'm doing everything correctly, but no matter how many times I repeat Sec 2 Step 2, I keep getting stuck on "Waiting on Device" when running unrEVOked recovery...please help!
 
I rooted my phone a few days ago with the Unrevoked beta. Got S-OFF, clockwork mod recovery was auto installed also. Played around with Wifi tether. What are my next steps as far as adding a custom rom and kernals that won't kill my 4G and will also let me boost my battery life? I've been eying CM for a while looks nice.

maybe try deleting and reinstalling your hboot drivers that helped me when i was getting my comm errors on the reboot process

I'm kind of stuck. I don't know if I'm loading the hboot drivers improperly or what, but I'm following the instructions to a "T" (or so i think).

Is it being detected as an "Android Phone" in the device manager. Then a again a moot point if you're getting to the recovery install portion of the process.

I installed the driver and i opened unrevoked3 and plugged in my phone as it says now it wants to install Android Composite ADB Interface and unrevoked isn't doing anything yet. What should I do?

I follow them on twitter, shamefully i feel like a hypocrite for spending all of 2010 bashing it, but twitter is useful. I also follow unrevoked as well
 
Not currently matter of fact dinking around on my Hero I'm as new to rooting as you are, however I've done tons of reading and research before taking the dive ironically i rooted my EVO B4 i rooted my Hero i just now loaded rom manager flashed a recovery and made a nandroid back up now i'm ready to DL and install a rom. My main goal is to get a battery friendly kernal on here. It's super easy once you mess around with it. Only do what you're comfortable with though. It's highly unlikely with all the help here but don't venter out too far and brick your phone.

That's definitely comforting. I remember when I had rooted my hero, I didn't have the problems then that I've had tonight, even though the one's tonight were completely user error. haha. I'm definitely doing all the research I can to figure out what all I want to do with it. Just going to have to tinker with it I suppose. Thanks for all the info none-the-less, you've been a great help!
 
I've been reading on the XDA forums about people having issues with the new release of CM. I DL'd it and am no reluctant about instaling it on my 0004 HW version rooted EVO.
 
I've got the new 2.6.0.1 CM recovery and have used it several times already with no problems. I'm hw 0004 with 40000 partitions. People were having problems with the 3.0 series but he fixed it with the "rollback" to 2.6.0.1.
 
I am sorry to ask a question that I have seen asked before but I have not found an answer. I have followed the steps completely over and over again for the past 4 hours and I always get hung up at the waiting for device screen. My antivirus is off. When I check device manager after I reboot the phone, it doesn't show a section for Android Phone. Could this be the problem. Everything else up to that point works just as described. I can't figure out what the hangup is. Thanks in advance for any help!
 
So if Clockwork Mod is now being installed with Unrevolk, does that mean they have fixed the partition problems? And if you have rooted manually can you just download it off the market?
 
Anyone know if it's a good idea to upgrade to OTA 3.70 from 3.30 before root?
