Root ROOTING For Dummies

Anyone know if it's a good idea to upgrade to OTA 3.70 from 3.30 before root?

I am sorry to ask a question that I have seen asked before but I have not found an answer. I have followed the steps completely over and over again for the past 4 hours and I always get hung up at the waiting for device screen. My antivirus is off. When I check device manager after I reboot the phone, it doesn't show a section for Android Phone. Could this be the problem. Everything else up to that point works just as described. I can't figure out what the hangup is. Thanks in advance for any help!

so Clockork not Cyanogen was the problem?

Tried to flash a new kernel and went into a constant rebooting cycle, restored to previous level using clock, now doing a backup using Amon to see if that helps, but Rom Manager won't let me download another rom without flashing Clock again? I'm confused if Amon is supposed to be better, why does it let me flash it and won't let me use it.?

You can only utilize all the features of rom manager with clockwork. The dev of clockwork is also the dev of rom manager.

So if Clockwork Mod is now being installed with Unrevolk, does that mean they have fixed the partition problems? And if you have rooted manually can you just download it off the market?

Yes I believe they did fix the partition problems. Recoveries are not in the market. The easiest way to get the latest recovery is to install rom manager (which can be found in the market) and flash the latest Clockwork.

So I have seen or heard that you are supposed to flash the ROM before the kernel, but when I did that I had a constant reboot. Now I've flashed the kernel and have been steady for about four hours, can I try flashing the ROM now? Trying Myn's version 4.

When I was previously booting it skipped the sprint 4g graphic.

So i recently rooted my evo, and flashed myn's warm twopointtwo RlS4. Everything worked fine, but now that i have the new ROM, when i go to set up my gmail account to get all of my contacts back on my phone, it tells me that i need a domain name, and if i dont have that it tells me that it failed to connect to the exchange server. Any ideas on how to fix?

nevermind, i'm dumb.

Having a little trouble.

I am using XP.

I went to install the hboot drivers and it recognized the phone as unknown device, but the drivers installed fine and showed up as Android bootable interface, so all is well there.

When I run unrEVOked and it asks for the phone(waiting for device), I plug in the phone and XP says it found a new device and wants to install drivers. If I say no I get a message ... device may not work properly and unrEVOked never recognizes the phone. Nothing happens.

Do/should I install the drivers in XP while the phone is booted normally? Will unrEVOked then recognize it?

I have never had HTC Sync installed never used it., and just wiped the phone and SC card before starting?

Everyone says follow the directions to a T, so I don't want to deviate.

Hey ya'll just wanted to congratulations to everyone who has been successful with your EVO's. Unfortunately I have not. It's showing s-off and I had backed up nandroid to the sd, I toggled the partitions around and now its just at the htc evo logo menu. Lastly it can go into the bootloader menu, but I can't seem to use anything to try to recover my evo. Any help would be appreciated.

Well if you can get into the hboot you should be able to recover. Can you access recovery?

After rooting, The HTC clock widget with weather will not work. The clock works, but it cannot find my location for the weather.... Please help. I have myn's two point two installed, but it did this even with the stock ROM, just after rooting.

Try opening maps and get a gps lock. Then try and refresh the widget.

I down loaded the unrevoked today and Hboot yesterday. From the links provided

Did I get an old version? Unrevoked says v3.3 but I downloaded on the main page that says v3.31. And the HBOOT drivers from the unrevoked modified usb driver link.

Also booting to the android area seems to act differently then described, the info above is always at the top, no need to go into the BOATLOADER mode. Also the BOATLOADER option just bring you back to the main menu.

Otherwise everything seems great. NAND backup seemed to have worked, Ive successfully installed and used apps requiring root(shootme).

This did not work... I don't understand... my Gps works... The only thing that cannot find my location is HTC weather... (haven't tried other weather apps, I want to keep this widget)

Yeah, I was able to access recovery through clockwork , but I was frustrated and tried other methods which were not helpful. It seems to update but it fails on radio-vz , everything else seems to update. then the system tells me it had failed and asks me to reboot:o

The only "problem" You might have is if you ever want to unroot and want to keep that hboot version. The OP only has a PC36IMG available down to hboot 0.97, so you'll have to get it from here:

Supersonic Shipped ROMs - xda-developers

Of course, you could probably just use the hboot 0.97 PC36IMG if you want to unroot, but I just thought I'd throw that out there :).

What exactly are you trying to do?

For now I'm just trying to get it to boot past the htc logo and not feel like I have a brick. Is there a way to start from scratch some how and just flash a custom rom in the current state?

So I'm the Android system recovery<2e> and it says E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
any tips on how to get a custom rom flashed and from where do I flash it from, because as stated before it goes into fastboot and starts loading pc36dia6.zip then says no image , loading pc36diag.nbh, no image or wrong image! loading pc36im.zip
hboot
parsing...(sd zip)
(1) boot -ok
(2) bootloader - bypassed
(3) microp - ok
(4) radio_v2 - fail-PU ( then vibrates a few times during this update
(5) recovery - ok
(6) splash1 - ok
(7) system - ok
(8) tp (blank)
(9) tp -ok
(10) userdata - ok
(11) wimax- ok
Partition update fail!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?

Then I'm at the Evo start up logo, and goes nowhere.
Please help!
