Root ROOTING For Dummies

So I know this has been answered 1000 times. 1001 please! Just switched over to CM yesterday and my market won't update. Force stop wipe cache reboot...nothing. It came installed on calk so I didn't have this problem. Am I missing something?

If you backed up your Stock SENSE ROM, flash it so your back using your backup.
Wipe your device, and clear the Delvik Cache from Recovery. Then flash CyanogenMod ROM again.

Let us know if that clears you up.

Just letting everyone know, that I thank you for your active support from the New Rooters and Veterans alike. Without your total support, this thread couldn't have became as great as it has.

Over 1000 replies and over 62,000 views has made ROOTING for DUMMIES one of the most active Rooting Threads in the Forums. Once again, thank you very much.

Lets keep this EVO section alive until the bitter end!! Or at least until Google refuses to give us any more updates. :p

It would've worked I'm sure if I didn't change the name of the file thinking it was cool just to be able to do that. Ya guess what...wouldn't install. So all I have is my last calk back up from monday morning before I switched to CM. UGH anything else Matlock? Guess my fail safe is gone if my phone goes boom before July 23rd 2011.

I freeze Amazon Mp3 using titanium backup but still it shows as running on the Manage apps :(

please advise

thanks

Try remaining it to what it was before you remained it. Then flash it.
If that didn't help, you may need to download an RUU file that has root already enabled, and flash it then start from there.

Yeah, its either a bug with Titanium or Amazon.
It dissapeard when I froze it back in October. Not sure why it is not being removed. You might want to email the developer and see what's up.

Rooted yesterday with unrevoked 3.32 but I don't believe it completed successfully. I say this because I never received the "Done" message. The phone did reboot at least twice during this time and came up fine. I waited for 30 minutes to complete before closing the unrevoked window and disconnecting the USB cable. The window showed "Rebooting... "Recovery image: ClockworkMod Recovery" when I ended the process. I tried to reroot but got the following message "failed to get root, is your firmware too new?". I think this may be due to the phone being partialy rooted with the same version I am trying to reinstall. Even though S-OFF, I am unable to do a backup via NANDROID or with ROM manager. NANDROID gives me a black screen with a red triangle and an exclamation
point. When opening ROM manager I get the message "You must root your phone for ROM manager to function. Super user was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "system/xbin/su". I have listed other apps I have tried with their responses or comments.

busybox - Status: Waiting, Your phone is not rooted and will not work!

Superuser - Comment: App is listed and seems to be functioning. Not sure what this does.

Terminal emulator - # does not work. It comes back with $. ls shows several files.

Since I can not reroot my only option may be to unroot and try again. I have read over the the unroot procedure and downloaded both files. I will wait for your input before attempting to unroot. One other question. I noticed that the WI-FI MAC address is now missing. Is this normal?

Found a market 2.2.6 apk on xda and flashed it last night. All is green again no more drab gray market. Where can I grab a RRU file? Just in case.

 so how do I unroot? I couldn't figure out how to click on the show buttons in the thread above :p :D

OK I'M JOKING!!! Thank you for a very useful, well written , informative (and above all Crystal clear) thread !!

Max Kudos !!

I rooted a few months back with unrevoked 3.2 (I believe) and I live in a non-4G city. Everything works well including wireless tether, the main reason I rooted. I never flashed a custom rom, although I did upgrade to 3.70 using this method.

Yes you can do the OTA update if you've unrevoked forever..here's how! - Android Forums

So, I've been reading about how to check for WiMax keys and I'm concerned they might be gone. If I use root explorer, there is no mtd0 directory in /dev/mtd/.
I have to be in recovery to use busybox (I don't know why) but the grep command does not return anything, even the lines starting with RSA-.

I don't know when Sprint is going to bring 4G to San Diego, so it's possible I will have moved on to my next phone by the time they do, although I can't imagine that now as I really love my EVO. But I would like 4G to work if I were to visit my daughter in LA. The returns I get from ADB usually error out with 'bad pipe' or some other nuts and bolts message instead of returning the lines always shown regarding WiMax keys.

So, as long as this is a 'for dummies' thread, could someone explain in excruciating detail how to check my WiMax keys? Maybe I'm worrying for nothing.

Thanks in advance.

OK, that's a big never mind. I had been using titanium backup and although it does install busybox, the path is not added for terminal emulator to use. I re-read this thread and saw that you could install busybox from the market, so that's what I did. Then did the subsequent install from the app.
I'm pleased to report that my WiMax keys seem to be fine as I am now getting the expected result from the grep command. I hope this post can help someone avoid the worry that I had over the past several days.

Tried to unroot but can't access the unrevoked-forever-son file because the recovery option does not work (Red triangle). Since I plan on attempting root again, I should be able to run PC36IMG from SD. I would then rename PC36IMG once it boots up, is that correct?

Ok, so you have s-off. That is technically all you need. Sometimes when unrevoked doesn't complete right, you lose recovery. Download this:

http://db.tt/PEhJy41

It's a PC36IMG.zip file. Make sure it stays named that, exactly. Copy it to the root of your sdcard (by plugging the phone into your computer and mounting it as a disk drive). Turn the phone off, then turn it back on while holding the volume down button to get to hboot (I'm sure you already knew that part). It will scan for the file, and prompt you to flash it. Once that is done, you will have a working recovery image. Remember to remove or rename the PC36IMG.zip so that it doesn't prompt you every time you go to hboot.

At that point, you have two choices. You can flash the s-on tool and the PC36IMG.zip that will full unroot the phone, OR you can flash a custom ROM since those are the two pieces you need (s-off and custom recovery). Before you do any of that, though, boot up normally. You said you have the superuser app, right? What version do you have? When you open it do you see any apps listed?

Try remaining it to what it was before you remained it. Then flash it.

If you have root explorer, try mounting /system/app as rw first, then try again. If you don't have it, you can do it from the terminal. I'll get the command for you if you need it. If it's still being stubborn, you can actually remove it from /system/app (and move it to the sdcard just in case you need it). Again, if you have root explorer, you just need to mount /systema/app as rw, copy it from /system/app to the sdcard, then remove it.

Interesting! What does Z4root do that allows the use of root-only apps?

It grants you superuser permissions within your current ROM. Unlocking nand (s-off) is considered full root, and all it really does is give you write permission to /system. Calling s-off root is technically sort of a misnomer.

So basically, if one wanted to root (and keep the stock ROM and kernal) just for some root apps (screen capture, rebooting, backup, etc), then just using this app and not rooting would get what you want?

Yes, but understand your limitations.

1) From what I understand of z4root in particular, you have to go through the process every time you reboot. Not that it takes long, but just remember that.
2) It is useful for running root only apps, and that's it. Certain root only apps that require other, deeper changes do the system are all but useless. An example is setcpu.
3) You can use titanium backup to backup apps/app data, but forget full backups with nandroid backup.
4) You will not be able to fully remove any bloatware. Titanium backup *should* work in terms of freezing what you want, but that's it.

Do you know what's involved in the "process"?

Pressing a button. I can't tell you how long it takes, though. Probably seconds. I'd try it, but in the time it would take me to unroot and try, you could just go install it yourself ;). That is, unless you're just asking and have full root already.

LOL, yes I'm already rooted (stock ROM/kernal) with Unrevoked 3.21 and was thinking about un-rooting and just going back to stock. I only use 3 root apps anyway - Titanium backup, a screen capture and a reboot app. And ever since I updated my profile and PRL (after rooting), I rarely seem to get 4G service anymore, where I was getting it previously.

But I'm hesitant about un-rooting, because I didn't want to lose my apps and associated data. So with that said, is it possible to backup my apps and data with Titanium backup, un-root back to stock, and then restore my apps and data from TB using the Z4root app?
