Root ROOTING For Dummies

This is what you'll be looking for.

[ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

Also read SECTION 6: UPDATING TO THE LATEST OTA under AFTER ROOTING. It'll tell you how to FLASH the Radios you need.

In that section when you talk about downgrading, how far should I downgrade or does it matter? And what is the most likely culprit for random reboots and choppiness with internet stuff. Reason I ask is because ever since I upgraded with the combo it's been acting kind of strange. I've had the random reboots ever since I flashed the CM6 mod, but I didn't run my stock rom very long with the upgrades, so I doubt it's the CM6 mod. Figured I would start with the radio, wimax, pri, nv, and HBoot, rather than the ROM...I see the Hboot isn't down-gradable, does that matter?

Thanks.

Edit: Just saw where you said the PRI is the most likely culprit. And also saw that the combo doesn't include the Hboot, however I looked at my version and I have the latest. So I guess my main question would be how far do I downgrade or does it matter?

Can you update GB nightlys from build to build? What about from a nightly to the stable version when it comes out? This is the only thing keeping me from flashing one of these beauties. I really don't feel like setting up a new rom every day or two till the stable version is out.

Now the only reason you should be downgrading, is because of some errors or sluggishness.

If that is the case, you want to downgrade one version at a time from each of the Radios; to see if it corrects your problem.
Remember to Nand Backup before each downgrade, and reboot your device.

When you decide to use CyanogenMod7 - Nightlies, this is what you should do..

BEFORE FLASHING CM7
1) Nand Backup - Just incase something happens.
2) Factory Reset - Since you are going to a different Developer ROM, this should always be done.
3) Wipe Cache
4) Wipe Delvik Cache

FLASHING CM7
1) Download CM7 Nightly from either ROM Manager - or CyanogenMod.com
2) Download GApps - This is the Google Applications. CyanogenMod will never come with them Stock. You can download these from either ROM Manager (it will ask if you want to download them when you download the ROM) or CyanogenMod.com
3) Use either ClockworkMod 2.6.0.1 or Amon_Ra Any Version to flash the ROM and GApps. DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER TO FLASH ANYTHING. (After you flash the ROM, reboot your device, then flash the GApps. You won't be able to set up your device until AFTER the GApps are installed)

UPGRADING FROM NIGHTLY TO NIGHTLY (NO NEED TO DO A FACTORY RESET)
1) Download latest CM7 Build from ROM Manager or CyanogenMod.com (You do not need to download GApps, you have them already installed)
2) Nand Backup
3) Wipe Cache
4) Wipe Delvik Cache
5) Flash ROM
6) Reboot

Do this each time you want to upgrade to the latest Build version.

All of your settings, Apps, contacts and everything else on your device will not be altered. But there is always a chance of an error, so that is why we always do a NAND BACKUP before we flash anything.

NOTE: CyanogenMod7 Build #0 - #6 (that I have tested) do no have a working GPS, YET.
I have read that you can try and download GPS STATUS to correct it. (I have no such success yet)

1) Download GPS Status
2) Open it and press MENU
3) Click TOOLS then MANAGE A-GPS STATE
4) Click RESET then DOWNLOAD

This is supposed to correct the GPS problem with Google Navigation and Maps.

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for this excellent thread. I've had my EVO (002) since release day and kept it totally stock via OTA's. Read and re-read (and re-read some more) the instructions here and successfully rooted my phone with Unrevoked (and big thanks to those developers too!). Reviewed some of the recommended Apps and purchased Titanium Backup and ROM Manager (first purchased Apps on this device ever, who says that rooting & Open Source are evil?) and then took the next step and flashed MikFroyo 4.4.

Everything works great. In fact my 4G service (Chicago) seems much better than before - areas where I wouldn't get consistent signal now regularly work.

I'm now reviewing the various kernels to see which I want to use for the next step.

Thank you again Matlock and all the contributors to this thread.

You seriously are a guru when it comes to this!!!
Gingerbread here i come.

Do they have 4G and HDMI working yet on CM7?

Edit:
I flashed the nighty and the native wifi tethering and such is sexy i love the look of it and it saves me having to flash a different kernel if i consider downloading CPU User. btw are there any recomendations or precations i need to take i'm using HW (0004)

GPS status works!!! Thanks again Matlock.

I rooted my EVO a few days ago and I've been looking at ROM's to flash and settled on MikFroyo 4.4. So far everything is going great and I have had no problems. I ordered a 3500 mAH battery w/ door from eBay and now I am watching my battery life to see how it hold's up. I also plan to check out some other ROM's in the future.:D

Hell ya!!!

I mean... SENSE is alright.. But I want a clean unalterd version of of ASOP (not including Developer ROMs).

IDK... this is my first AOSP and I'm really missing Sense. I don't mind not having it, but there are some looks and feels about it I like better. I'm really more into Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5 theme then CM7 at this point.

GPS status works!!! Thanks again Matlock.

What do most people use GPS for? Honestly, I understand the point of traveling and all that, but can't people just read a map the old fashion way? Atleast until its fixed lol.

I just tried rooting my htc evo tonight and after I started the rooting process via unrevoked 3 I got to the part where it says, "Rebooting". However it has been idle there. I looked at the Q and A's but could only find variances of this problem.

Thanks in advance for any help

GPS is actually used a lot with Android.

Besides the odvious Maps and Navigation.. We have Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. Location based services such as Google Search, Buzz and more. Location-Based services are gathering speed now a days. Just look at all the Dating/Social/Flirting apps lol

Which Rebooting was it? Was it the first or second Reboot? If it was the first, you may need to run unrevoked again. If it the second, you can check to see if you have a couple of things..

* Open your app Drawer and see if there is an app called Super User (A guy with a mask with a gun) - If you do not have it, you need to run unrevoked again.

* Turn off your device, Hold Vol Down and Power button to boot into the Bootloader. On the Top right corner, check to see if it says S-OFF or S-ON.
If S-ON, your security is still on.
If S-OFF, your security has been disabled and you may be Rooted. Go to the Next *.

* Download Terminal Emulator. Open it.
- Type su (lowercase). This will let you know if you have ROOT and grant T.E. Super User Access.
If # shows up. Your ROOTed.
If $ shows up. You are NOT ROOTed.

So... If you have S-OFF and are showing # in terminal emulator you are ready to customize your device!!

Also an easy way to check to see if you are ROOTed is to download

WiMAX KEYS CHECKER

STEP 1: Go into the Market and download then run; WiMAX Keys Checker.

STEP 2: Click Root access? (This will check to make sure you have ROOT privileges.).
(NOTE: If you do not have ROOT access, refer to ROOTING & BACKUP - SECTION 1.)

STEP 3: Click Busybox installed? (This will verify you have Busybox installed on your device.)
(NOTE: If you do not have Busybox installed, download Busybox by Stephen (Stericon))

STEP 4: Click Check for RSA keys. (This will take a few seconds to check for WiMAX RSA Keys.)

Only step 2 is really needed to check ROOT, but you can use Step 3 and 4 as well to check for Busybox and WiMAX RSA Keys (4G).

Happy anniversary to you . .. and I hope your not sleeping in! So I am ROOTING! I'm so excited. THe unrevoked screens says : Done.
my phone is in ClockworkMod Revocery v2.6.0.1 and the reboot system now is highlighted green. It's been this way for 6 or 7 minutes. . . do I reboot and if so how? what do I push to engage this menu???

Oh my, I just figured out how to tell if people are online. . . all of the little android heads I see are grey . . . except my own. OMGoodness. Okay, I'll wait .. .

whew. glad you are here!
I found the wiki which helped me out some. I'm now at a place that says I don't have busybox installed correctly. . . but it doesn't tell me how to fix.

I found out about the busybox in a program called wimax rsa checker. It said I have root! Then stopped at busybox . . . so don't know if rsa are fine, but I'm assuming they are since 4g is on.

Found BusyBox in the market. Installing now. . . hope I don't brick anything!

Says "STATUS FAILED..." (I hate that word SO negative and final)
"failed either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount".
I did a nand backup earlier - per the tutorial. . . what should I do?

Well, so with the help of the Wiki that is pointed to in the first post, I got the troubles all figure out. Must say and great big Thanks to Matlock for the most helpful post EVER. I have been wanting to root for months, but I didn't feel sure enough until finding this forum and this post. So Matlock, you da bomb!
Now I just have to get brave to flash some ROM'S. . .
I"M ROOTED!!! WOO HOO!!!
and, I no longer feel like a novice . . . just a baby step ahead of a novice. . . or just confirmed that I can read and comprehend!

I agree here. I would say that CM6 seemed to run faster, moving from apps to apps and screens to screens. One thing I didn't like was how the contacts synced up. They didn't sync very good with facebook. I tried a program that someone suggested on the forums but it didn't work very good. Syncmypics or something like that.

Also Matlock I didn't end up downgrading my radios, just flashed myn rls5 and having had any rebooting problems, so maybe it was the cm6 mod I flashed.

On a side note this flashing of ROMs back and forth is pretty addicting, I love having different ROMs I can go back and forth to whenever I want. I think I might try another one tomorrow just to see what it's like.

Also think I am going to try out the gingerbread keyboard to see what all the hype is about it.

I have referred 3-4 people to this guide. Good stuff.:D

Careful, the ROM flashing is addicting, and amazingly easy. Just be sure to follow all the steps and read as much as you can and ask as much as you can on all the forums.
;)

So to clarify, what was your problem, and how did you correct it? So I know and can add it to the FAQ.
