Is anyone else completely disinterested in the Atrix now?

What are you talking about?

SD cards are called Memory cards. I went ahead and differentiated them both by calling one 1GB of RAM (Random Access Memory).

It is actually Storage. Just because you call SD cards memory cards doesn't make them memory. SD cards are a form of storage just like a hard drive or CD.

No doubt about that...and I know I'm just ticked off right now at AT&T for being so freakin' greedy. But I'm seriously considering sticking with BB for now and seeing what happens with this in the next month or two. Or maybe the Droid Bionic will be come out by then and prompt me to leave AT&T. It's kind of a no-win with these carriers now though.

Not sure it's all AT&Ts fault. Are you pissed at Verizon that the Xoom is $799???

So if you get the laptop dock do you HAVE to get the tethering plan? I just wanted it for wifi. I'm not really into the phone now, I might wait and jump ship and head to big red later when my contract is up

From the stories, it sounds like you need to get the "data pro" and tethering plan in order to use the Firefox browser. :( (When its not technically tethering.)

Nope, still on deck to buy it when its' available.

Better resolution + PPI than other Android phones (read carefully before posting "but X has Y" :) ), full compliment of features (GPS, FFC, 5MP camera with LED flash, HDMI out, HSPA+), apparently terrific battery life (according to Marc), and dual core CPU on deck for future performance enhancement.

It sounds like it's going to be right line with other high[er] end phones upgrade pricing. Plus I'd like to give Motorola a try with a smartphone, since I won't be considering another Samsung (at least into the foreseeable future).

The comments about the design? It's a phone, it's a rectangular, plastic, cheap consumer device, it doesn't mean much to me and I actually have a design background. If it works well, I'm good.

I am absolutely fascinated how many people won't even consider buying this device because of the heinous pricing and contract requirements placed on the laptop dock (I'll get to the HD dock later).

Think about it... Many people have stated that because of the pricing on the docks they are now willing to go with a lesser Android phone and avoid what is arguably the most powerful and advanced Android phone on the market. I get it if you are shooting down the Atrix and waiting for other dual-core phones but some folks are willing to walk away from the power and capabilities of this phone and get a lesser phone because of dock pricing? Really?

Then of course you have the HD Dock. An item that I don't think is too far off on price when you consider all that you get with the bundle (Maybe $30 too high). The dock of course does not require that you get the tethering addition to your contract either (of course the footnote about using the full Firefox browser without tethering might kill that but we always have wifi). So really the only two stupid pricing items we have is the laptop dock and tethering requirement. Not a deal breaker here.

I for one will switch from my iPhone 3GS to the Motorola Atrix. I have little doubt that the dock pricing will come down over time. If not I'm sure I'll find a jaded or buyers remorse consumer selling the dock on craigslist or eBay for pennies on the dollar. At which point I can snatch that up too without the ridiculous tethering requirement (Wifi, ain't it grand?).

I hope the Atrix is a rousing success because I want to see an even better Atrix 2 in a couple years when I'm ready to upgrade. If consumers are smart they will let AT&T and Motorola know the insanity of the pricing on the laptop dock and not buy it leading to changes in pricing by the vendor.

Think about it... Many people have stated that because of the pricing on the docks they are now willing to go with a lesser Android phone and avoid what is arguably the most powerful and advanced Android phone on the market.

And in six months there will be a new "most powerful and advanced" phone on the market. And a new one six months after that, and so on. The question I keep asking myself is "what do I want to do with my phone in the next six months, and will the Atrix do it better than something else?"

The impracticality of the webtop (due to the tethering plan requirement) has changed the answer to that question. Will we see AT&T push out an Android update in the next six months that will really take advantage of the dual core? Not likely. Can Android apps really take advantage of a Gig of RAM in the next six months? Nope. Love the battery -- no question there, but I really only need the phone to make it from 7a to 7p on a single charge. The other specs are kinda "meh".

Let's face it, the Atrix horsepower is there to support the webtop. Without that, it's just not compelling. Sure, some folks enjoy having the "fastest" and change phones almost as often as they change underwear -- and that's cool. But for the rest of us, we gotta wonder if Atrix as a phone makes a lot of sense right now.

Not sure it's all AT&Ts fault. Are you pissed at Verizon that the Xoom is $799???

Is that price confirmed yet? With the rumors that the laptop dock for this phone was 150 and it turned out to be somewhere between 300 and 400 scares the hell out of me that the xoom could be 899 or even 999.

The early adapters tend to pay the most for things. When VCR's first came out they were expensive. Now you can get one for $50 or maybe even less. You can get a Bluray player for $100 if you look around. Sometimes, just waiting a few months can make a huge difference in what you can afford.

Yeah, I wanted the Atrix because my inner geekgirl wanted it. But the price with the laptop dock is not realistic for me at this time. Six months from now...who knows? I might even get just the phone without the dock.

Whatever choice I make, I need a new phone because the iPhone 3G is almost 3 models behind now and not able to do one of the things I really want...use Flash. And no iPhone can do that or will likely do that on the iPhone 5. Since my contract isn't up until April, I'm going to wait and see the reviews for the Atrix and Inspire.

I am still planning, I think, to pre-order the Atrix. I REALLY want that lapdock. Yes, I do think it's cool, and for me, useful. I've been using a crappy feature phone for 2 years now, I want something new and unique. I'm still trying to figure out, though why ATT says you have to the tethering plan WITH the dock. I can understand that the phone is 'hotspottable' but I don't see how the lapdock makes that any more so than without it. If the phone is capable and ATT just doesn't want people to have the ability w/o paying for it, then they should insist on the tethering plan, FOR EVERY PHONE THAT IS CAPABLE, whether you want it or not. Just because you attach the phone to a dumb terminal shouldn't mean you have to have the tethering plan.

Now, IF ATT is insisting on the tethering plan simply to get the 'reduced' bundle price BUT you can still buy the lapdock separately for full-price w/o the tethering plan, then big deal. Get the phone, then pay full price later for the dock w/o the plan (if applicable). Though I doubt this is actually the case, if you buy full-price w/o tether plan, then you'd end up saving quite a bit.

I still feel in some way I shouldn't, due to pricing, etc, but I just might, as someone else posted, get the bundle as is. I got a bonus and tax refund to spend, might as well spend it on something I want. Anything new and lust-worthy is going to be expensive. I saved $5K+ on buying the motorcycle 2 years old rather than new. I'm willing to pay the price, this time, for being an early adopter.

I know the at&t people dont want to hear it (myself included) But if this phone, docks and all were coming to VZW, I bet alot of people would feel a bit better about spending a heard earned $500 on the Atrix and the Laptop dock! I know I would. There are a few people running around screaming about the specs and how good they are, it beats everything on the market..Blah Blah!

I'm going to give some of those people a dose of reality! A PHONE IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE NETWORK IT'S RUNNING ON! Period, end of story!

Yes the phone is pure hotttnesss, it's amazingly speced out! But alot of people feel the whole sha bang is a lil much price wise! Lets wait and see how the network handles the phone, how fast it is, and how call quality is before we start justifying how much the price makes sense, and that we have a new Jesus phone on our hands. Time will tell!

What's a does of reality? Also I know it's the cool thing to bash AT&T but there are places in the country where AT&T is the best wireless carrier. Where I live I have no issues with AT&T.

It's DOSE wise guy! And who's saying it's cool to bash at&t? I'm on at&t bud! What I'm saying is, before people start going to bat so hard for something, dont you think it's wise to let it run it's course and get released first! Lemme guess, you already have a dual core phone running on at&t's NEW 4G network, and your certain the phone is awesome, and that the battery is awesome and doesnt get eatin up by that dual core right? you know all about it crushing every thing thats out and coming out right? Ease up killer, i'm just stating the obvious, when it's released we'll see if $500 can be justified, and if this new at&t 4G network is on the money!

I completely lost any remote interest I had in the Atrix when the pricing was announced. The idea of getting a phone and netbook in one is to have convenience without incurring too much cost. In fact, it should be cheaper due to shared resources.

I'm not surprised by the requirement of a tethering plan. But the cost of the dock is on par with a medium-quality full-sized laptop.

and we are STILL holding the phone hostage over the price of a add-on , the phone is only two hundred on contract, thats the same price as the Craptivate was at release, and this thing has a working GPS. The Craptivate was also $549 to purchase at release, I think Moto is being really generous. The laptop dock is ridiculous anyway, its not going to eliminate the need for ANYTHING, Motorolas biggest mistake was even making one, all it has done is give people an excuse to hate the PHONE  at this point.

The pricing dont bother me. The main reason I wanted this phone is to be able to use the dock. But im not paying for an extra plan when I dont get a signal at me house as it is and would only be using wifi.

If you can get the phone without the tethering plan I would still buy it.

Only thing I lost interest in is getting the laptop dock.....lol

If I do choose AT&T I will still be very interested in the Atrix.

What I'm saying is, before people start going to bat so hard for something, dont you think it's wise to let it run it's course and get released first! It's DUAL wise guy!

I haven't read every post in this thread, but it really confuses me.

If the two docks were never even created, it would still be a great phone for $199 on contract. That's what I paid for my Captivate seven months ago and this phone is, literally, twice the power (CPU and RAM). Not to mention the fact that Motorola has shown that they can actually write decent software for Android devices, unlike Samsung.

The way I see it, BOTH docks are overpriced but I'm not forced to buy them. Without them, I'm still happy paying the $199 for the phone. Motorola/at&t has given me additional options with the docks, but I won't be buying them. End of story. The end. Have a nice day. :)

Haha, nice catch. I wonder if there will be another adhoc edit of the original post.

Maybe it IS duel? One core insults the other core, they meet at 12 cycles, fire one instruction, last one out of the pipeline loses?

:D

That's exactly my thoughts, but I will say maybe it depends on your starting point. For Captivate owners who have none-to-mediocre GPS, no LED flash, so-so performance unless the phone is rooted/ROM'ed, this phone seems like a major upgrade.

For something coming from something like a Droid X (I realize a different carrier), maybe the peripherals were one of the really compelling "upgrades" over the DX functionality.

I can't predict the future - no wait, I can, Steelers over Packers, 27 to 20 :D - but I have reason to believe (through discussion in development channels), that we'll see OS level multi-core extensions in the very near future of Android that will be made available to the Atrix (and the other several phones on the horizon with MC CPUs).

I also think AT&T is going to re-work the policy/plan/price on the laptop dock ASAP.

Thank you, thank you. I totally agree. I wanted to do the switch from t-mobile to AT&T because of the Atrix. But the data plans for new customers suck and now the pricing of the accessories for the Atrix that are essential for the usability of the phone and the additional tethering plan...no thanks it's too much...regarding the 4G network.: I had a MyTouch4G on t-mobile. It is a fantastic phone and it is probably even more fantastic when you have 4G. I live in San Diego a "4G" area and my download speeds are around 1mbps in the areas where I live or work. Of course there are areas where I can get speeds up to 5mbps but I spend 1% of my time there. I expect the same from the AT&T network just that my friends get 2mbps on 3G in the areas that I spend 50% of my time. But nevertheless it will be spotty coverage and inconsistent speeds. The Atrix is a great phone (gadget?) but if the network sucks the phone is useless with its dual core processor and great display, except you are a gamer. A smart phone is supposed to utilize the internet and 3G/4G data and then you get crappy 2GB of data plan and have to pay extra bucks for tethering to use the accessories...and maybe it doesn't even work so well because their 4G network sucks...too many risks to change to AT&T.
I learned my lesson as you said on t-mobile but at least they were cheap. Returned my MT4G and now I have to decide: Atrix/AT&T or Thunderbolt/Verizon.

I agree that we shouldn't hold the entire phone hostage based on the price of an addon. So, back to the phone.

-potentially locked bootloader, which means Motoblur and a lack of quality custom ROMs (Cyanogen?)
-Sense and Touchwiz is hardware accelerated, whereas Motoblur is not. My Incredible's UI runs circles around my friend's X in terms of response (on stock or Cyanogen)
-It's on AT&T. I've been on both AT&T and Verizon over the past three years, and I can't see downgrading to AT&T's network without a very good reason. The Atrix isn't it.

Great phone, just not for my needs. I did strongly consider it though.

As soon as I heard that the dock requires tethering I was done. My contract is up in March. I'm going to let it run out now instead of upgrading. Need to reconsider AT&T. I feel insulted with these prices, like I dont even want to be associated with a company that thinks they can pull something like that.

My contract is up and my wifes is up in June. I am just going to hold off. I live at Lake Tahoe and our only choices are Verizon and AT&T. I am going to price Verizon again.

I thought this was going to replace my Blackberry, I have totally lost interest.

first not fair to throw out the potentials on the phone as your phone could "potentially" fall into a mud puddle and never boot again who knows .
second there is nothing to motoblur and although I agree that it is crap I feel the same abot ALL stock launchers Sense gets the big YAWWWWN, it was nice when the Dinc was released but everyones getting over it now, its been done time to move along.
third cellphone carriers can only be judged on the area of service in question I live a little upstate in NY and I have EXCELLENT coverage everywhere I go, Verizon has equally good service but My 3G is WAY faster than both of my brother in-laws who have a Dinc and a DroidX, My captivate rips them both.

On a side note this phone for the most part is not going to need a rom optimized for anything as it will have the power to plow its way through normal system processes, on top of running say, ADW with custom icons and every other thing you could throw at it. all our phones are middle weights compared to this thing. The crap that drives Android users nuts on current devices are going to become non-issue on this one.

and a fingerprint scanner :confused::confused:.

Not really! Bell is getting it in Canada. So I'm not too worried about plans or crap software.

As for Moto messing it up, I have faith in the XDA community. No phone is un-hackable.

Can't wait to get my hands on one!

Android! - I'm coming back.

Also, I hate Sense!
