LG Optimus 2X / P990 Reviews and Videos

"Needless to say, I was surprised that the 2X immediately hopped onHSPA when I inserted my personal AT&T SIM. Regardless, just know that what we're reviewing here is something between the international model and what will be launched in the US."

Interesting.

So is he saying it can work on AT&T and T Mobile. I saw a clip and it had a T Mobile sim card in it.

If so....AT&T are about to get my money....

After what everyone's saying about the sluggish action of the UI, I am definitely flashing my own ROM on this thing.

I'm a bit disappointed that most of the reviews have a sting in the tail - I question LG's abilities if they can release a device for review with such major software glitches - I could be patient waiting for gingerbread, but it is a different matter for major bugfixes :(

Yes I agree. Also it seems that there's a lack of consistency in the reviews/test phones. Some reviewers say one particular feature is a potential deal breaker then another never mentions it?
I'm new to android so I don't know, were other phones prone to such inconsistencies pre release?

Android by it's very nature has always been glitchy and required tinkering with - this isn't a problem if you are geeky as long as the phone manufacturer doesn't block you through the front door. Saying that I don't remember anything as major as a crashing browser requiring a reboot with HTC phones

You just beat me to it.
Very nice extensive review. It's quite positive overall. I especially like the comment from Nvidia that counters all the whining, nay sayings that dual core is useless for android 2.2~2.3. Games and multi-media certainly seem to benefit from it.

I posted the link here before reading the review.;)

Like you say its quite positive overall.:) I feel a little happier with my choice now.
Your right there was a lot of debate about utilisation of the dual cores, I'm glad to see its been settled once and for all. A lot of peoples expectations are too high for this phone. It was never going to make people ditch their new high end device, all It could ever do was offer a "high-end" semi "future proof" upgrade when the time came. It would seem it does that with aplomb.
I can't wait to see what Gingerbread + rooting could do.

I know something hotter will be out shortly, especially with the MWC round the corner but unless whatever it is gets released by the end of March in the UK. I'm LG Optimus 2x all the way!:D:D

I really can't wait for android 2.4 which they say is optimised for dual core phones, but i don't like the preloaded apps that come with it, they really should get rid of those and give us the choice to install them instead of forcing them on us.

I know its a little off topic but how often to does android get updated? Is there a schedule? You can see by the way the releases are named, cup cake,

Because android has such a long way to go yet the updates are almost always substantial, and I'm not sure how often they happen but judging from the time i've spent reading android related news honeycomb came out relatively close to honeycomb, and the updates' first letter go up according to the alphabet ;-)

Cheers Cazman. I wonder how goggle are going to differentiate between phone ware and talblet ware. I'm sure I read honeycomb was tablet only. Any way, whilst over at T3 I found this. It looks like updates are coming out thick and fast.
Android 2.4 due for April release | T3 magazine

There have been so many complaints about the software that I really have to reconsider buying this phone. If they don't get the bugs fixed, I might just get the next dual core phone. I don't want to regret my purchase just because I couldn't wait a couple of months more.

I'm having second thoughts too, I really don't want to resort to rooting the phone and using another ROM to make it work well. I'm really looking forward to see the HTC desire 2 at MWC to see how it performs, since HTC is a very experienced company with high end Android Devices.

I'd have no problems using a custom ROM if I felt confident they will be actually developed by anyone significant. TBH I'm beginning to think why waste several months more waiting for the next great thing after the O2X (which will also most certainly have it's own bugs) when I could get the Nexus S now - this will still be a massive improvement over what I have now:confused:.
I was prepared to give it till the end of March, but any longer seems to be counter-productive as I will be putting up with an increasingly ageing phone (Hero) for so much longer than I need to. Also getting a Nexus S now will mean I will get to next upgrade time so much sooner than if I keep holding out. If the Desire 2 is coming out in April then I may be tempted to wait a little bit longer, but anything more will make me reconsider my gameplan.

Some Android phones come out and have maintenance updates come out right after launch.

The Droid X and 2 did. The X had an update to fix some issue with the web browser and some other stuff. Cant remember what it was for the Droid 2. Motorola, like LG, stated it didnt have final software on it when they sent phones out for review.

Why companies do that, I dont know...

Yep me too, I'm ashamed to say.... Maybe we should wait for post release reviews? Also the very same could happen with HTC etc? It is of course entirely possible we have hyper sensitised ourselves.

I think that in view of the number of dodgy reviews, LG seriously need to own up to the bugs and let prospective buyers know that fixes are iminent along with a software upgrade roadmap of some kind. If they don't make some kind of statement, then they stand to lose a lot of sales on launch day. Perhaps someone should email them with links to the reviews to get an answer?
