Official Motorola Atrix Review Thread!!

There is no special SIM card but there is a new feature code for HSPA+ that does need to be enabled. If this wasn't during the review, that would explain a lot. Guess we just have to be patient and hope for the best.

Edit: Actually I apologize for the misinformation. My brother just called me and said they received their new 4g SIM cards and was told to hand them out for customers purchasing the Inspire or the Atrix. He says there is no indication that it is a 4g card, but it is a different color than the other SIM cards. It is also a normal sized card, not the microSIMs that are in the iPhone 4s. Finally he said an interesting thing is the 4g phones will work on 3g cards, you just may not get the faster HSPA+ speeds.

So what you might be saying is that the Atrix reviewers might have had regular 3G Sim cards which might explain the slow data speeds ?

Couldn't really say for sure. I'm just saying that there are indeed 4g SIM cards. I would think AT&T would've sent the review phones with these new cards but who knows. Would be a good question to ask a reviewer to check though.

AT&T had this to say when I asked yesterday about the lackluster speeds the reviewers were seeing:
@ATTChrisF
Chris F
@smknipe no special sim required for HSPA+. As always we are reluctant to comment on 3rd party reviews.

If your contact has seen these special sim cards, then it just seems that AT&T has no clue about how this roll-out is transpiring...

My contact is my brother who works for AT&T. He called me today to tell me that his boss gave him these new 4g SIM cards to give out to customers who purchase the Inspire or the Atrix. His manager also told him that he was told the phones will still work with the normal 3g SIM cards as long as the correct data plan is enabled on the customer's plan (HSPA+ I'm assuming). It could just be that who you spoke with was unaware of this because until today my brother told me that there is definitely not a special SIM card, and he was very surprised with today's delivery to say the least.

I have an Inspire. When I got the phone, I was told that it uses a regular 3g sim card for HSPA+ speeds.

From what I have read so far, the HSPA+ speeds will not be seen until March 1 at the earliest. I have also read that the 4G cards are not necessary for HSPA+, but will be necessary for LTE phones.

I don't know if this is correct or not as it seems there is a lot of conflicting information out there right now...

I can't really say for sure either. This is what my brother was told but that doesn't mean his manager knows or understands everything involved either. That is very interesting though because he was told to give it to customers who purchase either phone. Thanks for the info, i'll let him know and see what he can find out because I think we would all like a definite answer.

Well he can 'test' it out on an Inspire demo. Put an 'old' sim card and see what's the speed test for it is and put the 4G sim card and see the speed test. If the 4G is getting better speed, then that answers the question.

If this is true there will be no swapping between the iPhone an atrix. I was planning on doing this with my micro sim card adapter.

Good idea actually... I might try to bug my local store to try that too...

Actually though, if the back haul isn't in place yet, the cards won't make a difference :/ ...

Possibly there are new SIMs that are just marked differently. They did this when 3G was new. The old SIMs worked fine but weren't as flashy as those marked '3G'.

Is there a phone of comparable size? I have a blackberry bold 9000 and have always enjoyed the large form factor. As a noob to the world of Android is the 4" Atrix a good size for a fella with large hands?

I agree, this would be a good test. Currently my brother's store only has an Inspire dummy phone, not an actual device. I have asked him to try this when he gets an Inspire in and he said he will try to. My brother's store is not exactly in a big area so they do not get as much merchandise as other locations. He shows he will be getting an (1) Inspire and (1) Atrix but doesn't know when.

The Captivate on AT&T has a 4 inch screen.

Thank you for the post! Great read while in school :D

Thought my decision to go Atrix and Android couldn't get more sure.. but it certainly does. Selling the iPhone 4 Friday, prepaying for the Atrix Sunday! Hope AT&T works with me and lets me borrow a phone in the meantime.

I'm glad someone else keeps up with android news while in school too! xD

I'm soo excited this coming out this Tuesday (Monday if you preordered)!!

Yeah, it looks like the Atrix is a tiny bit thicker (0.2mm), not quite as wide (close), but a bit shorter. I find the Captivate just about the perfect size, big enough to feel comfortable while using it, but not so big it doesn't fit well into a pocket (jacket, jeans, etc.)

I guess I have average sized hands[?] for my height/size (I'm about 6-1").

I'm coming from a Bold 9000 also so I "may" have the same feelings you may have. This will be my first Android. I got tired of waiting for RIM to put out a decent device and wanted something new to play with.

The slower speeds are because HSUPA is disabled and HSPA+ isn't live yet
