Root ROOTING For Dummies

I think this would be an appropriate time for my first post. Just finished rooting my Evo and now I can't wait to dig even deeper into what this phone can really do. Big thanks to all who actively participate in these forums (the ones dealing with rooting in particular!) and making all of this easier for the rest of us!

Also looking forward to no longer being simply a lurker...:D

Welcome to the rooted world! I hear that once you go rooted you won't ever go back. ;)

Sorry bud, I would be confused with the mac as well...Maybe try to uninstall everything and start over from scratch again. Or just root it with a Windows pc

Just use 7-zip found here. Been awhile since I rooted but don't remember needing winzip. I'll find all that out again soon, because I'm going to root my wife's phone. Just use the computer you used to root your phone.

Thanks. The process itself is painless, I think the initial jump from stock is much worse. I had one problem though, when trying to flash the unrevokedforever.zip, it failed once, then when I tried again, it froze, I had to take battery out and restart. Any ideas anyone?

I had the same problem the first time I rooted. I just restarted my phone and it went through smooth after that. As for why it would freeze, I'm not sure.

Been awhile since I rooted but I think you should be using the unrevoked3 which is called reflash_package.exe

Did you follow the guide in the OP?

I am trying to do also custom root, but somehow its not going good.Let me see how to report the error.

So I've been rooted for a while now, but haven't played around with ROMs or kernels much yet. Since i finally have a day off today, i decided i'd give it a go. Quick question before i do though. If i already know what ROM and kernel i want to try, can i flash them at the same time? Or do i need to do the ROM, let it start up, then shut it back down and do the kernel?

You can do them both in the same recovery session. ROM first then kernel.

I suggest this ROM MikFroyo, the guys in there are great help as well.

One more quick question, to do both at the same time, do i wipe, flash the rom, re-wipe, and flash the kernel? or just wipe, flash rom, then flash kernel?

So, the phone is on USB debugging and all HTC Sync software has been removed. Unrevoked 3 will not recognize the phone is connected and won't run, any ideas why before I break a computer?! lol

Wipe everything, what recovery are you using?

It wouldn't hurt to wipe everything then flash ROM and then just wipe cache/dalvik cache then flash kernel. I've never done that but it wouldn't hurt anything. Just make sure that after you flash the ROM you don't wipe everything again. Make sense?

Hey nick1313, it's good to see that you're really participating in this thread, helping others! Keep up the good work! :D

Thanks. Just paying it all back. I got a lot of support and help in here so I feel like it's my duty to try and help when I can. All the android communities are great, here and over at xda. A lot of people willing to help out. :D

Hi, I'm new to this. I've been around smart phone though. I jail broke my iphone so
I know a little. However, my problem starts with trying to unrevoked my HTC EVO 4g. I have downloaded the unrevoked modified driver and made sure it shows in my device manager as stated. I'm using Windows by the way. I then downloaded Unrevoked3 and went through turn off phone holding the power button down and the volume button at the same time then run the hboot, after, I connect my phone to my pc and click on the reflash file and it starts, but I get stuck at Installing unrevoked3 Service, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong & what I should do? Thanks.
