Root How to install ICARUS 1.1 by Isaacj87

Thank you DearlyMon! :D

Is there any way you can get me a little 'mac user section' to add to the original step by step. And what step in the instructions do you think it is that is screwing up the flash on a mac? Is it the download of the CWM and ICARUS zips?

I dont know diddly about macs. LOL

;)

Hey twstde! (love the variation of twisted LOL) Welcome to the Ascend forums! :)

Happy to read you got it going without any probs. Just for the record do you have Cricket or MetroPCS? It helps us to troubleshoot when we know these things.

Congrats! Oh...and try Barnacle from the market for your tethering. Everyone says it works great! :)
Hey Jazziette,
I have Cricket on my Ascend.
thanks for the welcome!

I read all the posts in this thread before attempting to fladh and got all but a2sd working. If you had not posted the thread to begin with I wouldnt have ever known 1.1 existed and if you werent so helpful to everyone else I wouldnt have managed to do this.

I ran into issues with the A2SD after installing Icarus 1.1. I had to use ADB to enable A2SD and also to move the Dalvik Cache to the SD Card. Once I moved the Dalvik Cache there is very limited space taken from my internal memory. After installing 500MB of apps I have only lost 15MB of internal space. I recommend using ADB to check and see in A2SD is enabled and all settings are correct if you notice internal memory decreasing when installing apps. All the apps you install should be going to the A2SD partition.

I had some similar problems getting a2sd to work too. But EVERYONE has to manually set up the Dalvik cache to SD. It's the way it was written.

Jazzy I do think that putting the information you gave me about a2sd on it's own thread would be a great idea. :D And put a link to it on one of the first posts here.

WOOT WOOT! it worked just fine now.
i think it got corrupted the first time. the zip was .1mb short on the computer i d/ld it to the first time and i didnt notice. stupid mac automatically unzipping my stuff.

again.... WOOT! and thanks jazz and rain and all the helpful ascenders out there.

Glad you got it working Toke. :D

OK first and foremost. Ty to Issac, Jazzie and everyone else involved in this ongoing forum of cheap smartphone dilemmas. I cant say how well this has gone as far as instructions and the details from everyone. I, like most others here, have been lurking in the forums and have done all the mods and steps and everything is great! I can also say that 1.1 does have the apps2sd preloaded and you can verify this with an app called Link2sd. It will show you which app has been installed to the partition on your sdcard and also give you the ability to move it and the data app cache to the sdcard via linking apps2sd. Also you can see the amount of space apps2sd uses with another app called Drive Watch. Both of which are available in the apps market for free.

But MMS is still not working, send or receive. I have verified that the (Cricket) APN settings are correct as well  and have also done the pull the battery out for 10 seconds and pull the sd card  then rebooting the phone method.

I also do not have 3G data for Market or Browsing without wifi. A little issue because i do travel and that worked fine before the Icarus update. Both I can deal without until i can replace my m860 with something better, ie: incredible or something of newer equivalent.

All things aside, it would be nice to be able to have the picture message ability until then. So with that being said, everything else is flawless! If you have not done this to your m860 and are considering it i highly recommend. Zero lag, I repeat zero lag people. these issues are small in comparison of what you gain with this rom from Icarus. Seems some people are hit and miss with their phones on the MMS and 3G data issue.

Thanks again to all who helped make this happen! :)

On another note..cant wait to see Isaac's new CM6 for the ascend..

Toke...you know you have to d/ld the free version of TiBu first and then get the pro version. Hope that's all that's wrong! :)

Yeah, i made a thread on that a few days ago. Figured my problem. Had to factory reset and reboot w/o SD. Still can't use a2sd. Looking up on adb now but I'm an arborist, not a code monkey. Might take a couple days.

Hey Jazz I tried to Put Icarus 1.1 back on my Huawei Ascend phone for the last 2 Hours now and both times i Did it when the Droid guy came up loading that all it did. I waited the first time for it to come on for 45 min then Redid it and still the same thing the droid guy did not stop loading. Finally I decided to Put Froyo 2.2 back on and it came up fast and great No MMS but its on Now if I just Dont get it saying No UIM Card again I will be ok lol

Yeah Andy, I agree that we need to have a link in the OP that directs those with a2SD probs to get the help they need. I'll be working on that today and will have it up and running within a couple of hours. Trying to squeeze my playtime here in between some other commitments here for now. LOL

Hi ʞunɟ024! And welcome to the Ascend Forum! We're really happy to have you with us. Thanks for the tip on links2sd from the market. I will be checking that out today. :)

I'm sorry you are still having issues with mms and this is the first I have heard of this with Cricket. Are you sure you have all the settings correct and that you have Cricket ticked? Please try this for me. Go to >menu >settings >wireless and networks >mobile networks > >access point names. Make sure that Cricket is checked!

If you still have probs dial *228 and send and then wait for your phone to activate. This will not affect ICARUS.

Also, check to make sure you have data turned on.

Please let me know if you get these probs fixed as there should be no mms probs with Cricket.

:)

I'll be making a new thread with the a2sd fix on it and linking to it here in the original posts. Sorry you're still having probs, Toke.

Thank you Dearly! LOL This should be very useful for mac users. :)

That's fabulous, Ascend! Hope you don't get the UIM error again. And maybe there will be an MMS fix out for the bootlet 2.2 soon. Hope so anyway. I wonder what's faster. ICARUS or the 2.2. Thanks so much for the update! Good info! :)

  • Use root explorer and put the Mms.apk on your SD card.
  • Use root explorer and move it to /system/app (make sure it's set to R/W) and reboot.

After you replace the original Mms.apk - Don't try to install it, just reboot!

Jazz...

I have tried the *228 activate code as well. Did not work. I have also checked the APN settings again and are all correct as well. I even tried to create a new APN and it doesn't save it. I cant change or modify the existing cricket settings either. Data is turned on as well. This does have me a little baffled. I did all the flash steps from z4root thru cwm and onto the icarus rom and followed them to the letter. Any help with this at all would be great. I have exhausted all i know i can do.

I want to THANK EVERYONE for these instructions and the questions, it made it extremely easy to install, with it being my first time trying this out it went smoothly. But the only problem is its not sending picture messages and I use it a lot and I did the changing the Apn settings but it still doesn't send :(!!! besides that everything is GOOD!!!

Hello. :) First post.
Another lurker unmasking themselves!

Got my Ascend a week ago and was completely ignorant about the capabilities of an Andriod phone. That is, until I ran across all the wonderful people here at Andriodforums! I started with z4root and Titanium Backup to streamline a bit and ended up taking the Icarus 1.1 plunge two days ago. It really is a fantastic thing! All praise to Isaacj87 for the wonderful ROM! Thanks to Jazz (and others?) for organizing the instructions so efficiently a noob like me could figure it out and to all those with who posted insightful questions, answers and suggestions. Everyone involved really did a tremendous job.

My experience:
Install went smooth as silk, just follow carefully the instructions. Had to do the mms fix cuz I'm MetroPCS, very simple and has worked perfectly, including picture mms. Wondered about apps2sd functioning properly but a memory check before and after installing an app, plus the great tools suggested by ʞunɟ024 above have confirmed that yes, it is.
OVERALL just awesome; faster phone, longer battery life, nice lookin color scheme.

MY ICARUS 1.1 QUESTIONS: (forgive me if these are noobish...or have been answered elsewhere...I looked)

I am running Titanium Backup. Will this interfere with my Clockwork Mod backup and ability to do a restore?

Seeing how Icarus is so fast, is it at all beneficial on the Ascend to run SetCPU? (Other than for the ability to profile my CPU processes.)

Is it advised to continue cleaning cache as I did pre-Icarus? (Cache Cleaner NG, Cache Mate. Unnecessarily redundant?)

Upon the review of many posts, I junked Juice Defender. Is anyone running a battery saving type app and what has your result been? (I'm using nothing with no complaints about battery life, but you know, the grass is greener.)

Has anyone run a launcher other than LauncherPro with Icarus? Results?

As I did before Icarus (z4rooted), I froze the Android keyboard for Better Keyboard. So far so good. Can I also freeze the Icarus stock music player and go with PowerAMP only?

UNREALTED: I also have a Motorola Droid 1 FRG83D (2.2.1? - don't have the phone with me) and would like to set it up with a custom ROM. I've searched Androidforums only briefly (possibly incorrectly) but haven't seen any post with instructions as user-friendly or performance as universally hailed as on the Icarus 1.1 post here. Any instructional links or ROM suggestions would be great.

Once again, thanks to all those who facilitated the creation of my "NEW" phone!

Any and all answers are appreciated!

Andrew.

trying to do the font changer but it keeps telling me nand is enable...what is that and how can i change it and if not i there another way to change the font???

Thank you DearlyMon! :D

Is there any way you can get me a little 'mac user section' to add to the original step by step. And what step in the instructions do you think it is that is screwing up the flash on a mac? Is it the download of the CWM and ICARUS zips?

I dont know diddly about macs. LOL

;)

Macs like to unzip and/or touch anything they can download.

With Windows, the zips seem goofy unless one has zip7 installed, so Windows leaves them alone. Macs are based on BSD unix - Android is a Linux (unix) - so unless told otherswise, the standard Mac browser used to access the zip for download will tinker with it - because it can.

As time permits, I'll detail these Icarus instructions and provide a side-line for Mac users without access to any Win/PC to get them home free. If I get late, please PM me to re-ignite on this matter.

With just the fewest tweaks, any action requiring adb and zips on a WinPC are easily translated onto a Mac.

Well I just installed Icarus 1.1 and so far it seems awesome (although I haven't played around with it that much as of yet).

There is an error in the directions though.

I repeat from the directions:

3) Connect the phone to the computer via USB and make sure the drivers are installed. Turn the phone off and wait until the battery screen comes out after the Huawei logo then press and hold Volume DOWN, End Key, and Power Button You should see the Huawei logo. Leave the phone like that and move on to the computer.

I couldn't get this to work until AFTER disconnecting the phone from the computer. So after you do the first part "Connect the phone to the computer via USB and make sure the drivers are installed." you should then disconnected the phone and turn it off. then do the trick to turn it back on (as it says by holding the three different buttons) and then plug it back into the USB.

Also I have cricKet and the data was set to MetroPCS so I had to go in and change that and it wouldn't let me sign into Google until I did that (well it offered to go Wi-Fi but that wasn't an option).

To change that I had to hit the MENU key (next to the trackball) then SETTINGS then WIRELESS & NETWORKS then MOBILE NETWORKS then ACCESS POINT NAMES and that is where you can select Cricket or MetroPCS (again I had to do this as it defaulted to MetroPCS but I'm on Cricket).

Otherwise it all went pretty smoothly :)

what. Is. ADB?

It's the Android Debug Bridge.

It gives a path/way for people with a computer (Windows/Mac/Linux) to access the phone the way a developer would.

Originally intended for developers, adb has become the darling of all Android rooting communities.

You get to via the Android SDK (Software Development Kit) and you download it here - Android SDK | Android Developers and see also - Android Debug Bridge | Android Developers

Many rooting communities develop mirror downloads of adb so that you have just what you need for rooting your phone. I started with one of those and it worked out just fine.

Just installed Icarus 1.1 and so far I'm lovin it. Install went smoothly...
Only thing is all of my contacts were saved to my phone and I didn't save them so they're gone... If I use the restore through CWM can i get them back???

MMS works...

not sure if i formatted my SD card right. I thought I followed everything but I'm not seeing the 2nd partiton. I tried Link2sd but it's not finding the 2nd partiton. When it starts i get a notification saying
warning
It seems that you applied App2sd, please uninstall and revert to original. Otherwise you cannot create link with Lin2sd.

Did I not create the 2nd partition successfully? Can i format sd card again to fix it?

The only hiccup I remember during Icarus install was at the step: Wipe dalvik cache
I remember seeing some type of error (something not found, I think)
But everything completed so I kept going and everything else went smoothly...
Could that be the issue?

I'm seriously debating restoring through CWM (to hopefully retrieve my contacts, if they were saved there) then reinstalling Icarus again...

Any suggestions?

UPDATE:
Through Titanium backup I am seeing the other partition.
SD card(a2sd) 239 MB (225 MB free)

So this is where my apps should be installing too, right? Can I make this partition bigger? Whats the max? I only have a 2GB card so what would be optimum size?
