Custom Ringtones in 2.2?

Lurker
So this may sound dumb but I can't get a custom mp3 ringtone to work now that I have installed 2.2. Any hints? I can play the mp3 in the media player but there is no option to make it my ringtone

1. Is it less than 300kB? (It has to be. Use Ringdroid to crop the file.)

2. Is it in the right directory? (/mnt/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones) I don't know if this really matters, but that's where all my "custom" ringtones reside.

3. Were you able to use that same mp3 in 2.1?

I don't know if file size actually matters should you have the file in the right directory. I noticed Ringdroid throws everything into a media/audio/ringtones folder (or media/audio/notifications for notifications), so I've just moved all my ringtones there. I just checked, and one of my ringtones is 650 kb, so the file size shouldn't be an issue. After you move the mp3, just go to the contact you're looking to assign the ringtone to, go to "Ringtone", pick the "Phone Ringtone" option, and then pick the ringtone you want to use.

I haven't run into compatibility issues with any of my ringtones in the switch from 2.1 to 2.2. If all else fails, just chop the file down with Ringdroid (or just open it up, select the entire thing, and save a new copy of it using Ringdroid). Should do the trick. The advantage to this method is that you will then be able to directly assign the ringtone. The downside is that you'll have duplicate files.

I've had the phone "complain" and not allow assigning a file as a ringtone that was over 300kB. I'll have to try the "open in Ringdroid and Save" option to see if I can use a larger file.

I found that all of my custom ringtones won't work in the stock 2.2-even though they will actually play and are less than 300kb. Just have to delete them and re-create them with ringdroid. No big deal. Easier than trying to figure why the others don't work that did with 2.1

I am also having the same problem, I can not use my ringtones for my contacts, and this suck, I have to listen to the same ring tone every time different people call me, Come on Android, Please someone help me!!

Just re-do the ringtones and apply them to the contact

I too have had this problem, and I solved it. I am now able to use custom songs on my phone from the music player as incoming call ringtones. Here is how to do it. First you will need to download Astro! file manager from the market. Secondly, you will need to have your custom music placed in the downloads folder of your android device. Thirdly, open up Astro! and navigate to your music (/mnt/sdcard>download). Hold down on the selected file , tap on edit, then tap on copy. Navigate back to the root files be pressing the home icon at the top of the screen in the application. In addition to this, once you are home, find your media folder, open it then tap on audio. You should then see a folder that says notifications. Once you are here, create a new folder titled "Ringtones". Open your newly made "Ringtones" folder and hit the paste button to move your music. Now to be able to select your song for a incoming call ringtone, hold your selected file, hit edit, tap on rename, then delete the file extension .mp3 or .mpga and change it to .m4a then hit save. Finally you are done! Exit out of Astro! by hitting the home button on your phone, going into settings, clicking on sound, clicking on voice call ringtone, then select your custom song. I hope this helps you guys out (:

Hello, thanks for the tips, but I could not find this directory.

I am using a Casio commando, in the root directory using astro I do not see a "media" folder, I do see a "music" folder but it is empty with no subdirectories. Any advise?

Regards,

Odd, I have all my contacts as Google contacts on my phone, and they have always had custom ringtones work flawlessly. I have found the 300 kb file limit as well though, and it doesn't seem to matter where they are on my phone.

Thank you very, very much! I've had a Captivate since Christmas and have NEVER been able to truly figure out the whole ringtone thing until just now. Great post.

No ringtone uses the 300KB rule on the stock Froyo FW. When i had mine locked still to my carrier, i was using full size MP3's in the Notifications folder, as well as the Ringtones folder. Your folder path should be

(drive letter):\Media\Audio\Ringtones

(drive letter):\Media\Audio\Notifications

I put mine on my SD card so i wouldn't lose them. When you unplug the phone, you **may need to do a battery pull so the folders get recognized properly. If your setting up your SMS ringtone, you can go to your main Texting screen (the one with all your threads in it), hit the MENU key (far left button) and select settings, put your notification ringer to whatever you want.

hope it helps.

BTW, If you have a file that is 3MB, it will not play the whole thing, i think its max limit is 15 seconds or so.
