Root Just rooted, have a few kernel questions

Hey all. I am a complete noob when it comes to rooting and wanted to start by saying thanks for the great guides about this phone. A few hiccups here and there, but I did successfully get my new EVO rooted without any major problems thanks to all the posts here!

On to my questions. :D

1) I am running MikFroyo 4.5 (loving it BTW) and if I understand correctly, this is a Sense ROM. I have not updated the kernel, just the ROM. I do have to get a kernel that is a sense kernel correct? I just want something to make my battery life better and was looking at the Netarchy kernels.

2) Can I update the kernel after already running the ROM for a day or so? Read somewhere on another board that you should flash the ROM and the kernel at the same time. I rememeber the rooting for dummies sticky said to flash the ROM then the kernel, I just wanted to be safe and not break my new toy, heh.

3) SetCPU. Do I need to have a new kernel to get SetCPU to work correctly/efficiently or can I try it with the default kernel that came with phone? Just want to check before I buy it from the store.

Hopefully these are simple questions for all of you here, I am just feeling a bit overwhelmed by some of the info, but slowly taking it all in. :)

1. Mik4.5 already has a sense kernel, the stock #15 if I'm not mistaken

2. Yes, you can flash a kernel after flashing the rom or flash a kernel whenever you want. Just boot to recovery>Wipe Dalvik cache and cache> flash the kernel> reboot Since you wiped Dalvik cache, a longer reboot may ensue;)

3. More than likely you will need to flash a kernel to allow overclocking. Some roms have a built in kernel to allow oc'ing but most do not. SetCPU is well worth the price, plus it supports the awesome developer of the app;)

Just fyi, make sure you flash a sense kernel for a sense rom and flash an AOSP kernel for an AOSP rom

First and foremost, Welcome to the forum, and congrats on rooting :D! On to the answers to your questions.

1. Yes, you have to stick with a Sense based kernel. Same goes if you're running a AOSP, you have to stick w/ an AOSP based kernel.

2. You can change the kernel whenever you want AFTER you've flashed the ROM of your choosing, it doesn't matter if it's a minute AFTER or a year AFTER but it does have to be AFTER you've flashed the ROM. See, every ROM (w/ the exception of one that I've heard of not coming w/ a kernel already in it, and can't think of the name atm) comes w/ a kernel baked in (usually HTC stock kernels), and if you were to flash a custom kernel before flashing the ROM, the ROM's kernel will replace the custom one. So remember, flash the kernel AFTER the ROM.

3. No, you don't need a custom kernel to use SetCPU. However, you will be limited on what you can do using the stock kernel and will only be able to underclock. Before you can do that, you'll have to "disable perflock" (there's an option in SetCPU where you can achieve this). If you wish to overclock, yes, you will need a custom kernel that supports it.

Well, got home and tried to update the kernel. Went with the 4.3.2 netarchy-toastmod-cfs-nosbc-havs-more-universal (More Aggressive HAVS) and it flashed and booted up flawlessly!

Was going to get setCPU but got scared when I could not connect to the appstore on the phone. Tried on my computer and gave an error too. Pshew... thought I had screwed something up lol

Will take a look at the setCPU guide while I wait for the app store to come back up, thank you for the link ocnbrze.
