I've noticed that if you hold down the volume down button while powering on the phone it will let you boot up in different mode. Of course being an android newb that's probably nothing new.......

hm...thats usually how you get into recovery when rooted...interesting.
I haven't rooted the phone. So it's not typical of an unaltered phone?
you set it down on a table or other surface? i did it today and it just... worked!
Settings -> Sound -> Flip for speaker (why isn't this in the "Calls" category??)

I think one of the coolest things I've found is when on a phone call flipping the phone over will turn speaker phone one.
one of my favorite features. very convenient when i need both hands free.
Crap! Seriously, is it only my phone that doesn't do this, or what?
Have you tried flipping it over face down on a table top? I don't think it works by just flipping it over in your hand. That would probably cause it to change to speaker phone when you didn't want it to.
Try the G-Sensor calibration. Maybe your calibration is off. It is unders settings>Display Settings.
I cut an old pair of headphones to make it just the tip and I plugged it in the headphone jack then go to the fm radio app and click menu to get the radio to go threw the speaker.
Mine works this way just fine.I've noticed that some idiot removed the ability to put the phone into silent or vibrate mode by simply holding down the power button.
