There's a new setting that has something to do with purging memory. Can anyone offer a good explanation of it and when we might want to enable it?

Not 100% sure, but see this: Allow Purging of Assets? - CyanogenMod Forum

yes, it is a great way to increase the amount of free memory the phone has. i would highly recommend it especially for the droid with low memory. we have been having memory problems and this feature really helped.

OK, finally loaded 2.5 today (so I'm sure 2.6 will be out any minute). So far, so good. It seems to have fixed the problem I was having with my Exchange e-mail not synchronizing.

So it is written; so it is done.

2.6 is out with some bugfixes, plus a major one for the Eris - no more force close when double-tapping within the camera app.

I haven't installed it - I'll probably hold out until CM7 is official at this point, unless something really improves.

I need some help. I'm running GSB 2.4 and I'm experiencing lag when going back to the homescreen from apps and the drawer. Im at 710 with smartass governor. I was using LP but it was so bad I switched to open home and its still pretty bad. TIA.

EDIT:
Compache RAM 18%
JIT on
VM heap size 24m

Go into (from whichever home you are using) settings->CyanogenMod settings->Performance and choose Lock home in memory - the restart the phone. This will help whichever home app you are using.

NVM. it's back to not syncing.

Yeah. I have the same problem every so often. Rebooting helps (for a while) but it eventually stops syncing again.

There is a program that's supposed to fix the problem and I'm getting close to trying it. It's called TouchDown. It's a little pricey as far as apps go ($19.99 with a 30 day free trial) so I just keep hoping CyanogenMod fixes it.

You added that other stuff after the EDIT after I answered. It doesn't have much affect on the home app. It's the lock home in memory that's key. (There is a similar setting in LP - menu->Preferences->Advanced settings->Memory usage settings->Prevent force closes, but I don't think that one is as necessary.)

2.7 was just released. It has an sdcard read/write speed tweak, and some speed improvements. Since I flashed 2.6 last night, the question is can I resist flashing 2.7 tonight. Hmmmm....

Where is this setting at?

It's not a setting - it's a script that is cooked into the ROM, that improves the speed of reading and writing to and from the SD card, but changing the size of the cache used.

See this post: xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM][4/7/2011] GSB v2.7 | GingerBread 2.3.3 [CM7.0.0 RC4 NIGHTLY] which references this post: [Script][CWM] Increase Read Cache for better SD Card access - xda-developers

Anyway, there is nothing to do - it's just a speed improvement built-in to the ROM. It should make apps that access data on the SD card (the camera, the Gallery apps) get data much, much faster.

I gave in. I was just going to flash over 2.6, but something went wrong doing that, so I just did a clean install. Almost finished setting things back up now. Also, I'm trying Go Launcher in place of LauncherPro just to give it a try.

Hey, doogald... read that thread and after installing xtrSense, I'm tempted to try GSB 2.7 on my wife's phone. How stable are you finding it? Obviously xtr is rock solid, but I've put CM7 on an incredible I bought off of Craigslist and I'm seriously digging it. I miss a few of the sense widgets, but CM7 is really slick.

Also, how much faster would you say GSB 2.7 is over xtrSense overall (not just SD but in all areas)
