Galaxy S2 is coming to Verizon with LTE in May. ChargeDOA?

Galaxy S2 is coming to Verizon with LTE in May. Charge is now DOA IMHO. Much thinner, dual core, and a new GPU.

Thinner? Says who. It'll be branded as a GSII but it'll probably exist just like the Galaxy S series as a unique carrier handset, and bet that the LTE functionality of the Verizon model will beef it up as well.

I question the validity of this document with such a close launch to the Droid Charge. Yeah, DOA would sound about right and why would Samsung sign up to such a tight timeframe between launches? Wouldn't it be a waste of an effort for them? Something does seem right and I doubt we see the GSII in May. More likely second half 2011, probably late summer.

Didn't have to sign a NDA, so I guess I can share the fact that I got to play with both the Charge and Galaxy S2 on 3/19/2011 at a VZW store. The Samsung rep was there and showing VZW's management what was coming down the pipe. The Charge was fully functional and striking. Of course the Super AMOLED+ display is to thank for that. But the real show stopper was the Galaxy S2.

It will be LTE, with no changes to the physical phone at all. It's the same form factor as the GS2 displayed and reviewed by Engadget. The only thing the rep couldn't tell me about the GS2 was release date, but he said that based on the product, and how it fits in with their overall roadmap, he would guess late summer to fall for the GS2 release.

So the Charge isn't DOA, I think it'll have a good 5-6mo on VZW shelves before the GS2 is available.

Thanks for the info....

Any other insights on the Charge?

Is it just the basic features which have alreay mentioned....or something new software or hardware wise?

That leaked roadmap is very hard believe, especially on SGS2 and DX2, timing and 4G wise. If that's true, both Charge and even Bionic might be DOA. I'm only hoping for charge, revolution to come as shown there.
If SGS2 really comes with LTE on Verizon without compromising the slim form factor and has 4G/3G toggle switch, it will be big runaway homerun for me. But I'm not convinced yet on the validity of this rumor.

Thanks for the info. That makes total sense, late summer/Fall.

Thanks for info. I have been skeptical on LTE in SGS2 due to the thickness required for LTE radio and big battery. So did that Samsung rep just tell you that or did you see that on the phone? If Samsung somehow manged to do that along with LTE switch on it, it will be huge hit in my book. Also could you get any clue on the processor running in the Charge?

Great info. Maybe Ill get a charge on a one year contract and upgrade in 10 months. Not sure I can hold out 6 months for the s2. Did the charge have the matte finish shown in the latest pictures or was it glossy?

charge is DOA simply for the $300 price. People were complaining about $249 for the thunderbolt which other than the screen on the charge it has single core nothing special. Not to mention you probably wont get any updates with samsung.

I don't think Charge pricing will be 300 if it is single core phone. Some folks are still speculating it's because it has dual core. I think it will settle near 200 if it's dual core or around 150 if it's single core.

Did Verizon's SGS2 have any type of video output? Like the Charge, Revolution and Bionic?

Did the phone come with 16 GB built-in storage, or will VZW neuter it like they did the Fascinate (2 GB versus 16 GB on other carriers) ?

If:

1) No RFS
2) GOOD GPS
3) GOOD battery life
4) Highly moddable
5) Pre-loaded Gingerbread
6) Unlimited LTE plans available at time of SGS2 launch

I would consider this phone.

No. 1~5 in your list are given for SGS2.
No. 6 remains to be seen. But that applies to any future LTE phone on VZW, not only SGS2.

I honestly think it depends on what the final pricing is. We're kinda seeing to tiers of 4G phones here. The Thunderbolt, Revolution, and Charge all have similar stats. While, the Bionic, SG2, and iPhone 5 (maybe?) are competitors. If that $300 price tag was wrong and the Charge is actually $200 - $250 where as the higher tier phones will be at $300+, I could see the Charge having a place. Sure the SG2 is better in every way, but let's be honest, a lot of those extras won't even matter to a casual phone user. If the Charge is anywhere near as fast as the Thunderbolt, most people will be just fine with the single processor.

What processor is in the Charge again?

And I agree about Fall release at the earliest for SGS2. No way would it be before summer. It would compete with too many phones.

It's going to have HDMI out through microSD slot.

I don't think it will take until Fall to be released on VZW. Since it's launching in Korea and Europe nearly two months earlier than Galaxy S did last year, it's U.S release schedule will also be pushed ahead couple months than last year, which means early summer.

But given Verizon's history of delays, whats stated on the roadmap is not likely the schedule that will be followed.

I'm sorry but i dont think the galaxy s 2 is coming to verizon...at least no time soon.
There really is no need to release a Droid charge and then a Galaxy S 2...I can't see them releasing these two phones back to back like that.

This is not the same scenario as the Samsung Continuum and Samsung Fascinate...

Personally I think the Droid Charge will be a spring release and the Galaxy S 2 will come out later towards the time the Fascinate came out and be branded the Fascinate 2. The Fascinate came out September 2010...So that gives the charge a 5, 6 months head start....

Just like I truly doubt the Bionic will be released until June. It needs something to compete with the Evo 3D

Well considering the Charge hasn't been given a release date yet and the S2 isn't being released in Europe until May, we propably won't see the S2 until September.

It might take that long for Verizon, but I bet that AT&T-mobile will get it couple of months ahead of them as usual.

I think you meant MicroUSB.

I really hope the Bionic doesn't have the pentile matrix for the screen, otherwise it will be inferior in nearly every way, shape, and form vs. the Atrix - unless they magically somehow release it with an unencrypted bootloader. If they drop the encryption or release the keys to the dev's I will likely overlook the pentile and be lined up release date to get one. I don't see that happening though.

I do however see your scenario (fascinate 2, and WAY later) coming to pass. Knowing how Berizon is, I wouldn't be surprised one bit. Berizon needs to somehow reduce the specs or take away some functionality from the device versus a "true" Galaxy S 2 device, oh, and they need to name it something different ... and I almost forgot! They'll have to put Bing on it too. All this damage takes time, you know. Berizon typically has valid reasons for being the last carrier with the latest tech.

Yes, I meant HDMI out through Micro USB. Thanks for correction. SGS2 will have it.
Recent preview videos on SGS2 show that it's very powerful multimedia device (digicam, camcorder, video/music player, etc). The SAMOLED+ screen sharpness seems better than SAMOLED on Galaxy S. If I pass on Revolution, DX2, then SGS2 will be the only one that I will set my eye on. I also really hope that VZW doesn't spoil this phone with stuff like Bing, though Bing is not show stopper to me if the phone is excellent otherwise.

The only phone outside Verizon other than SGS2 that interests me is LG Thrill 4G (Optimus 3D) with OMAP4 processor, dual channel memory on AT&T (satan's network?). SGS2 will go to AT&T-mobile ahead of Verizon too.

Okay obviously i am missing some kind of inside joke...what does Berizon mean?
