Root Droid X OFFICIAL Gingerbread on May 10 ?

As far as I know, the EOL date circulating comes from one single blurry photo of a leaked document months and months ago. Has anyone actually had a confirmation other than that?

So when this ota come's and we are rooted and verizon see's we did not receive it will our phone still work or do you guys think they will shut us down. I think they will just turn into ferry dust.

I was just in a VZW store trying to convince my girlfriend to upgrade to the Droid2 Global (she wants a keyboard) and when I brought up the end of life thing the people that worked there pretty much had no clue what I was talking about, and when I mentioned that the X reached EOL on 3.31 they laughed at me and said no it didn't. I wanted to punch them in the face. I just wish that I could talk to a Verizon employee, be it in the store or on the phone, that knew more than me for once. They are the most useless reps out there. I go to an autoparts store and get plenty of good information, I go to VZW store and get laughed at cause they don't know what I'm talking about. I swear they all just work there for free ipad/iphones and free voice plans...

The EOL was actually pushed back indefinitely, but the other phone they announced as having the same EOL (the Incredible maybe?) did end.

Actually, you are close on this one. The eFuse technology is designed so that those who do not receive the update will be sent a self destruct signal in which the phone's internals will completely fry, rendering your phone useless. Just make sure you SBF back and take the update when the OTA comes out.

I don't think that it "officially" has reached end of life status yet.

When I look on the Verizon Wireless web site I see the Droid X listed for sale as a new phone. Unless I'm mistaken VZW doesn't typically sell end of life phones as new. Don't know if VZW's silly URL will copy over but here's the link I get for the DX as a new phone...

and as a certified previously owned phone...

Interesting. I have always wondered if EOL meant that they are simply making no more new phones or if they shut the whole thing down. I suppose if the EOL date is when no new phones will be sold, they must cut out stock in anticipation of that date.

I understand your logic. You think that by taking the most recent OTA verizon won't assume your a modder because they assume modders don't get the most recent OTA, correct?

Well here is the problem with that logic. I have about 6 friends with android phones still on 2.1 because they are so clueless, or don't care either one. But basically I have a couple friends who have updated, and the majority is still on an old OS. So basically what I am saying is I imagine there are thousands and thousands of people who have no clue they are not on the newest OS, and thus would be in verizon's "watch list".

So if that truly is one of verizons methods to watching people it will be an epic failure.

I thought this same exact thing when I read that theory by P3Droid.

Because when I read it I remembered back to when I was playing around with my buddies OG Droid and I found an update he hadn't taken. So I asked him about it and he was like, "update? What update"?

And this guy was ALWAYS tinkering with his Droid! So I thought to myself if that guy, who messes around with his device more than at least 50% of all Android users had no clue there was an update on his phone sitting there waiting for him, then Verizon is going to have astronomical figures of users who are rooted in their databases.

I have a question. I myself am not on a contract with Verizon but for those of you that are, when you sign this "contract" with them for your phone and service, do you get a copy of said contract?

The reason I ask is because I was wondering if it states in your contract that, in a nut shell, Verizon has the right to butt f*** you by treating your phone as though it was only leased to you and you don't have the authorization to modify said phone in any way.

It would seam to me, if you bought said phone, you have the right to do whatever you want to it. Even if you got the phone at a bargain price from them. You know you paid their cost for it +. As long as you keep your service in good standing for that one or two year contract period.

I purchased my phone outright, cost me a total of $850 bucks, but the phone is mine to do with as I please. I think the time has come for you guys to start making waves for cellphone companies. Their contracts are the equivalent of you buying a car and the dealer telling you modifying the engine is a violation of your purchase agreement and they disable your car.

Verizon does not say you can't modify your phone.

They don't have to help you modify it. They don't have to warranty your modded phone. They don't have to support it. They can make it as hard for you as they want to modify it.

NOWHERE does it say you can't root, theme, install ROMs, or anything else to it. Nobody who is informed has ever said that.

Actually, no carrier says you can't do this.

They don't have to help you modify it. They don't have to warranty your modded phone. They don't have to support it. They can make it as hard for you as they want to modify it.

The implication of that statement is clear as crystal. Even their own tech support will tell you they can't help you because you voided your warranty by modifying the phone. To me, that's the same as telling you that you're not allowed to do it.

No, its no different than a car manufacturer who wont warranty a car because you did an engine mod. It is ENTIRELY reasonable for them to refuse to help a phone modder. They cannot possibly know how to fix all of the permutations of possible of mods or the implications of them.

They provide a product not just a piece of hardware. If you modify that product fine, but don't expect them to know how to fix your mods or provide any help.

Honestly I think anyone who thinks different hasn't done tech support for an IT product. You simply can't support everything.

That is the furthest thing from the truth......how could they possibly help you if you have installed software that they have no knowledge of? You cant expect Verizon to spend money and time training tech support to learn every rom out there for the phone...thats rediculous. They are just not supporting your software, and rightfully so since it is unapproved, and unsupported by them.Im glad they arent,as it would add cost to the phones and service.Bottom line is if you wanna play you gotta pay, take the time to learn how the phone works, and do the research, then if you have a problem, with the support of the android community and from your research, you should be able to restore your device,if it is a software issue....

Raw, that is perfectly reasonable. I expect that. but, cellphone companies allowing you, or not caring, to modify your phone has been an issue for the past few years. And only till recently did these companies say "ok, go ahead and mod your phone, we will void your warranty and not replace your phone should you mess it up"

In the past they were voiding your warranty AND contract. Im not saying they should honor a warranty if you did something to change the os and messed it up. All i'm saying is cell companies act as though YOUR phone is only on LEASE to you.

I guess what I'm trying to say is cellphone companies like to beat you over the head with these a$$ backward contracts. They take all YOUR hard earned money and have the nerve to tell you what you can and cannot do with YOUR phone.

I know i'm probably not articulating this very well but it's my hope you will understand where i'm trying to go with this. Yes, it's great they are now moving toward letting you mod your paid for property, but it seams to be a concept they are still trying to control. I:E a locked out bootloader.

The bottom line is they make money off the phones when you purchase them from their company. They are not losing any money if you mod your phone to your liking. They sell the phone regardless of what you do to it.

I know what you're gonna say, "it's not verizon locking the bootloader, it Moto". But you have to consider what verizon is gonna do as soon as Moto does unlock the bootloader. I personaly believe verizon WILL do something to lock it back down on you.

As I said before, the more dependent cell companies can make you on them, the more money they make. And that's how they like it. Why would they change that?

Yeah I know but if you think about it it does kinda suit the topic of the official ota release of GB. What else will they do to lock it down on you when it finally gets released.

well its legal to jailbreak (root) your phone...its protected under the DMCA now...but they have no obligation to service the device...

In the past they were voiding your warranty AND contract. Im not saying they should honor a warranty if you did something to change the os and messed it up. All i'm saying is cell companies act as though YOUR phone is only on LEASE to you.

when were they voiding contracts? ive never seen this...

you also have to remember that you're buying your phone at HIGHLY subsidized rates with contracts...somebody has to pay the added costs that you're not paying...

I guess what I'm trying to say is cellphone companies like to beat you over the head with these a$$ backward contracts. They take all YOUR hard earned money and have the nerve to tell you what you can and cannot do with YOUR phone.
you're quite missing the mark here...its similar to the whole GeoHot vs Sony PS3 hacking case that was just recently settled...frankly you own the hardware, but do not own the software which is included and you sign an EULA/ToS to use it...the companies reserve the right to change/modify/terminate your usage of the software at any point...in essence you are leasing the software from the companies...

I know i'm probably not articulating this very well but it's my hope you will understand where i'm trying to go with this. Yes, it's great they are now moving toward letting you mod your paid for property, but it seams to be a concept they are still trying to control. I:E a locked out bootloader.

the problem is that this "paid for property" does not really work that way...i paid for my car...but i can't remove the catalytic converters (legally ;)) from it...should i be able to? its my property...im even told how i can drive the car, and i have to follow someone elses rules for using the car...

my parents own a house/property, but there are TONS of restrictions as to what they can and cannot do with their home/property...

as for trying to control the process...of course they are! and nobody can blame them!

1. Motorola is attempting to protect their intellectual property
2. Verizon is trying to protect their profits...if people break their phones by messing with it and start returning them VZW looses money
3. In a sense they are also protecting people from themselves...you're taking a lot of risks with modding...if its harder to do...less people will do it..

its legal to mod your phone...but its not illegal for them to try and stop you...

The bottom line is they make money off the phones when you purchase them from their company. They are not losing any money if you mod your phone to your liking. They sell the phone regardless of what you do to it.
id really like to see some hard numbers as evidence to back up your claims about how much money they make on the phones compared to what they have to shell out to subsidize the MSRP from Moto...

You call 399 a HIGHLY subsidized rate? I paid 550 for mine outright. I wouldnt call that HIGHLY subsidized. And you're right, their in it to make money. But they went from making money to butt****ing you overnight. And you want to see proof? Do what im sure you tell others to do, search the web for the statistics. You sound like you work for verizon or something. If there were less people like you out there that defend big business they probaby wouldnt get away with half of what they do. Im sorry if that pisses you off but iys true.

And only till recently did these companies say "ok, go ahead and mod your phone, we will void your warranty and not replace your phone should you mess it up"

Please provide evidence that this has ever been a violation of the contract. I have never seen it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is cellphone companies like to beat you over the head with these a$$ backward contracts. They take all YOUR hard earned money and have the nerve to tell you what you can and cannot do with YOUR phone.

Where are they saying this? The contract does not forbid meddling with your phone in any way. What is wrong with the contract?

it seams to be a concept they are still trying to control. I:E a locked out bootloader.

Fair point, but the bootloader is designed to control proprietary code from the manufacturer as well as (which we have recently learned) ferreting out people who are using tethering outside the terms of the contract. I don't necessarily agree with the locked bootloader, but there ARE reasons for it, even if you don't agree with them.

They are not losing any money if you mod your phone to your liking. They sell the phone regardless of what you do to it.

Which is why they don't prohibit modding. Period.

I'm sooo happy with darkslide 4.2 that i have no problem waiting for GB to get ROM's. I've gone about 2 months without having to SBF, I'm so proud of my self..lol
