Eris to v2.x, when?

Received an email from HTC today. Here is what was wriiten:

The update is scheduled for the first quarter of this year. Now while I can not definitively say any dates, I would expect it sometime end of January to mid February. Hopefully, this helps you.

Regards,

HTC Support

Music to my ears. Hopefully the HTC guy is well-informed and that while there's no specific date, the timeframe is somewhat accurate. Q1 ends at the end of March, right? I would be ok with a mid-Q1 release.

Hmmmm very interesting. The first update was on 12/11/09, the second was 1/08/10 and the third is set for 1/22/10. If we take each of these dates and add them together we get 41 (11+8+22). If we take this number (41) and divide it by 4, because this will be the 4th OTA update, we get 10.25. Now add 2.1 (the OS version) to that 10.25 and we get 12.35. Now, February is also the second month of the year.....month 2 and OS 2.X.

So, by my calculations we will start to see 2.1 roll out on 2/12 @ 0:35 in the morning.

Well, all that useless garbage and the fact that every other OTA has been on a Friday and 2/12 is mid month. :D
ROFL!! Excellent-can't argue with logic!

So, will there first be a maintenance patch release in preparation for the _real_ upgrade (which appears to be the case with the Mot droid)?

Sorry if this has already been answered, but when the 2.x update comes out, what will happen to the Sense UI that is also on the Eris? And will I lose the multi touch functionality in my web browsing? I hope not because I love that.

Oh and this is my first post, so Hi everyone :D

Not sure but HTC does have a new Sense titled Espresso that is supposed to work with 2 and higher.

i would say all the features we enjoy will remain and we will get additional functionality and probably some bug fixes too

I'd read that the lack of Sense working with 2.x was one of the main reasons HTC doesn't put 2.x on their phones.

Too early, I know, but all this talk about Froyo has me thinking: will Eris users be getting this one as well, maybe a good while after everyone else, but still? Will our phones be able to handle it? Will HTC even bother with our phone later on down the line?

Kind of, but not really.

You have to understand that 2.0 just came out when the Moto Droid did. Up until then 1.6 was the latest and greatest OS out there. So was Sense having trouble working on 2.0? Yes, but only because it wasn't out yet. HTC didn't start working on a version of Sense UI for 2.0 until 2.0 was released.;)

I think (and hope) we'll be okay and one of the things going for it is the volume of phones (Eris) out there, given Verizon's size.

Any links to guesstimates (or websites that track this) of sales volumes of different phones ?

...and that's just here.

Talk about blah blah blah.

Huh.

please do review my posts, there is maybe 2 or 3 in the lounge/games section, maybe 100, maybe in other sections, that leave 900+ here in the eris section helping people....

what have you done lately?

oooooooo....So is anyone really expecting the Jan22 update to be 2.x? Anyway to get it early? Or is this different because its an OS update an not just a patch? Just doing my part to get back OT.

Early? The 22nd is in 2 days. :p

I don't think 2.1 will be here this Friday. Even though my post was a joke, I really do think it will be on 2/12.

I guess I was asking the question with the pretext that I don't think the OS update will come on the 22nd. And to the second ? I updated to the software version 1.17 by DL the ROM and installing it myself , but with 2.x being a firmware upgrade will that be possible?

My personal opinion of the 2.x release will be on the 22nd. The date Jan 22nd has been around for almost 2 months now and since then there have been a few minor updates yet there wasn't any big deal about the dates surrounding the other updates. HTC has the most Android phones out there and are the manufacture who is making "The Google Phone" the Nexus One. They probably have more experience with the OS then any other company and they already have 2.x on their other phones. Since I bet a lot of there phones use similar parts, they can probably port the OS to any of their phones without much work. When it comes to Sense UI, most of it is a skin for the main page and the rest are the small apps like footprints that go along with it. They probably just needed time to make sure everything worked without a hiccup before sending it out, plus you need the carriers approval. This will probably the largest OTA update ever done on Verizon and some of the delay might be just Verizon making sure their servers are set up for the update along with having their technical staff trained to handle any problems. When HTC said that it might be from late Jan to early Feb, that could also mean that it is not rolling out to everyone at once but that the first people will get it on the 22nd and continue over the next week or so as not to overwhelm the system

Yeah, good points. We'll see what VZW and HTC have to say to my emails from yesterday. Still no response. Hopefully you're right though. While I doubt the 22nd will be the date for 2.1, the whole thing about HTC having the most experience with this stuff is very true. I hope it comes the 22nd. I don't think it will, but I hope.

If they're smart, they're going to spread any major OTA's spread out.

But, that means we're going to have to put up with "I know this guy who got the update, but I didn't." for a few days....

It's like picking someone up at the airport at the arrivals; you get some comfort knowing the plane landed and he'll make his way out soon enough. But you wanna see the plane at the gate for assurance...helps you keep patient a little longer before you tell him to sod off and get a taxi.
