Root Quick Guide to the rooted stock 2.3 ROM

In the past, I've simply taking to installing and then doing a factory reset. I'll let you know how that works out for me - on stock roms, it seemed to remove guesswork.

Scudder, novox77 is correct - a nandroid is a time machine. It takes you forward or back on everything except nvm, radios, bootloader and recovery. No other wiping worries on nandroid restores in my experience.

I have run into issues on more than one occasion of problems on a restore WITHOUT wiping. It seems that if cache is not backup up(Amon Ra optional) and is not wiped prior to a restore it can(doesn't mean will) mess with the restore depending on what you are coming from and going to. The issues I have had were going from AOSP to Sense or the other way around. I have talked to others with the same issue but it does not seem to be a common issue. It might just be something with Amon RA as CWM backups up everything in default where Amon does not.

that makes sense. Rather than create specific instructions based on what recovery image you use or what images you choose to back up, just wipe everything. It explains the redundancy. And IMO, rebuilding from scratch is worth the effort to ensure a perfectly clean build. removes all the variables.

This is my understanding (I may be wrong):

Nandroids are images of the entire partition, including empty space. Which means that when you restore a nandroid, it overwrites the entire partition, leaving nothing behind. The partitions that the NANDroid backs up include the areas you normally wipe: data, cache, and dalvik. Therefore, you shouldn't need to do a wipe before you restore a Nandroid.

When you install a new ROM, you typically only replace /boot (kernel) and /system (OS). Which is why data, cache, and dalvik need to be cleared. A format-all will also wipe /boot and /system, but this part is extraneous, since the new ROM will flash over these partitions, which effectively wipes them anyway.

I always understood it was unnecessary to wipe before restoring a nandroid. I never have wiped and I've never ran into an issue;) This is using AmonRa v2.3 for the EVO and ClockworkMod for the Hero.

But I'm sure it wouldn't hurt but I've also read many more having issues wiping before restoring than not wiping so........to each their own:D

I can't seem to find where the camera fix attachment is. Would you be able to post it again please?

Welcome to the forums!

Go to the first link in the OP above, to the XDA site to download the rom.

Scroll to bottom of first post there - look for GB Camera Fix zip file link.

This is what my screen says, i just flashed the radio i think.. here goes..

FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

Can you guys confirm that i got the correct radios? even though i dont know what they are for.

What does updating the radios do? It seems like the first step only updates the kernel, but the second step will update the radios...

So why doesn't the first step come with the radio updates and what are the pros/cons of upgrading the radios or not? I would like to flash to 2.3 (currently on 2.2 stock ROM, rooted with unrevoked), but I don't know what benefits, if any, there are to flashing only the kernel and not the radios.

Thanks!

i was using my phone for a couple days with no problems at all.. the rom comes wiht the kernal.. not the radios..

I realize that. My question is what does upgrading the radios actually do?

yea.. i would like to know that also.. but i think i did it.. not certain.. dont know how to tell.. i think hboot just did it.. so..

anyone know what is the camera fix for?

only thing i notice is that its kinda fuzzy..

Not sure about the camera fix, but the radios help with reception and in turn battery life. Some have seen increases in 3g/4g speeds while others have seen better signal strength for cell calls. Depends on the area you are in and your current signal strength.

It is not necessary to flash them as some are running the rooted 2.3 rom with the older radios(2.15.00.11.19)

Understood, thanks as always! I guess my hang up/concern was reverting from 2.3 to 2.2 I thought, for some reason, that the nandroid backup wouldn't be "enough" to revert back to 2.2...?? I don't know, just sat weird for me but NOW I'm straight with your, novox77 and cdadams1223's comments...thanks all!

Humor me...I'm, first and foremost, trying to LEARN :) ...but also, in the process, trying to save myself some work if I can do so...

Here's what I do:

1) Wipe all/Format all (whatever it says)
2) Wipe Cache
3) Wipe Dalvik Cache
4) Flash Calkulin's Format All
5) Flash ROM

But I also read the OP which said:

Flashing the ROM
Most of what you'll be doing will be done through recovery. So play around with the menus in the recovery image to see what options are there. Start off by doing a NANDroid backup. Since this is a quick guide, I will assume you know how, or can find out how. Next, wipe dalvik-cache. You don't need to wipe data or cache. Now you are ready to flash the ROM. The ROM contains the stock OS (w/ superuser) and stock kernel. All of this is done from the recovery image.

When the flashing is done, you can reboot and see if it worked. Take a quick look to see if your data, apps, homescreens are still there. They should be. If you like what you see, you can stop here. Having the most updated radios is not essential for upgrading to this ROM. If you want to flash radios, keep reading.

I'm rooted, obviously, but I'm running STOCK froyo 2.2...I have NEVER flashed ANY custom ROM. So for my particular circumstance (and other people with the same rooted-but-still-stock-froyo situation) do I really have to do a wipe all/format all and/or a Calkulin's wipe or a Vr_superwipe?? It appears from the OP that I can simply: (1) nand backup (2) wipe dalvik ONLY (no need to wipe data or cache) and (3) flash the ROM!!

The reason I'm asking what may seem like I'm being LAZY with flashing is NOT because I want to get myself in trouble with a half-ass ROM flash where I didn't wipe properly but because I recently HAD TO do a factory reset, wipe EVERYTHING and start over because of some SD/other corruption and, over the past couple weeks have been incrementally restoring my nice cleaned out, wiped out phone to where it is now. I would reeeeeally rather not lose ANY data or apps to have to restore again already spending my not-too-much free time over the past couple weeks to get to where I already now... :o

THANKS!

I prefer the conservative approach when it comes to wiping. Remember, if you've done a NANDroid backup, you can F up your ROM flash to kingdom come and still recover. So... assuming you have a NANDroid backup done, wipe dalvik and flash the ROM.

Then, when you boot into the new ROM, if it's all F'd up, go back to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, and then reflash the ROM. Boot into the ROM, and see how it is. If it's still messed up, then sorry, you'll need to wipe data as well.

With my methodology, I tend to soft-brick my phone a lot, which means whenever I mess around with flashing roms, I remove my otterbox case so I can do battery pulls. If you'd rather be conservative with brick situations instead of data wipes, (which is recommended for most people), then do the full wipe.

Well, I'm off to try my non-conservative, half-ass NAND backup/wipe dalvik/flash :D ...thanks!! I'll report any problems (for the other half-assers out there! ;))

THANKS!

What is a good battery saver kernel for this new rom? I installed netarchy kernel, is that okay?

Edit: I flashed the netarchy kernel and everything was going fine but all of the sudden I tried to take a picture and my screen was all white??? Are there certain kernels I can or cannot use with this rom? What is a good recommended Kernel for this rom, especially for battery life savings.?

I flashed the other kernels provided on the same page as the new rom and that fixed the camera issues but now I can't overclock or under clock my cpu. I need a better kernel...

I don't believe they have custom kernels for this rom yet. I would look for them soon, but there are none that I am aware of at this time

I noticed that Camera Fix link at the XDA link. I don't have a camera problem but have seen people asking for a fix. I was wondering what people have been experiencing to need a "camera fix"??

Heard that from some people but did not experience myself. Camera and video seems to work fine for me...

Hi, I'm new to the forums, but have been reading them for awhile...

I would appreciate any help I could get, and I've been reading numerous threads and forum posts from a few other sites, and nothing I've come across applies to my situation (not that I've been able to find that is).

So here's my situation:

Had 2.2 previously rooted. The only reason why I rooted was to get the Wireless Tether app to work. And it did under 2.2, everything was fine. Then for some reason, I updated to 2.3.3 thinking that I'd be able to get everything working again.

This is where I'm having problems:

I've downloaded: supersonic_4.22.651.2_odexed_060511-signed.zip

I'm trying to get into recovery, and when I first rooted my phone, I do recall being able to get into recovery, performing nandroid backups, etc.

However, now when I try to get back into recovery, it ends up taking me to a black screen with a phone, with a red triangle and exclamation mark. I've tried pressing the red exclamation mark (and everywhere else) to have it launch the clockwork mod, but nothing works, I finally have to pull the battery in order to get out of the screen.

Here's the output for the VOLDOWN+POWER screen:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.16.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.05.02

Any suggestions on what exactly it is I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well the issue now for you is that you accepted the 2.3.3 ota. so now you have hboot 2.16 and no custom recovery. do you have s-off? if you do you might be able to try and use a ruu to downgrade you to 2.2 then try rooting using unrevoked. i have heard somebody on xda (i think) that that worked for them. if you have s-on, then you will have to wait for a new exploit to be found which could be a while.

D'oh!

Yeah, HBOOT-2.16.0001 to be precise, and, luckily, yes, I have S-OFF

Allright, I'll try searching for the post on XDA. Hopefully, I'll be able to find it

if you have s-on, then you will have to wait for a new exploit to be found which could be a while.
Hmm. I was thinking, is there an easier way to get SU working again without flashing the entire ROM?

Thanks for your reply!
