Evo 3D 'pro' reviews

Though I didn't study each review intently, I noticed the reviews that were worse with the call quality were those based out of NY. It doesn't suprise me in the slightest that there would be call quality issues in that concrete and steel jungle, no matter what carrier/device. I think the bar was set high for this phone by all reviewers, as we have, and it didn't meet expectations for it to blow them away. Had the expectations not been so high, probably higher reviews. And most said it was worthy of being flagship status.:)

I'll keep a watch for any huge issues when I get mine (in 9 days :D), and go from there. And it truly doesn't matter if someone wants to come in and snicker at the less than stellar reviews. Let 'em get their jollies where they can. I believe this is the phone for me. If not, prolly get a EVO4G. Because Moto's a no-no, Sammy's a Whammy, and there ain't no I in phone.;)

Anyway I was supremely impressed by the evo 3d. IMO it was noticeably zippier then the motorola atrix and the LG G2x(maybe this is sense 3.0 or the extra ram i dont know but it was extremely quick).
.

I hope you are right about this, comparing it to the sensation =]

Welcome to the forums!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, they're definitely encouraging (and more in line with what I expected) than the Engadget review in particular.

Does Radioshack put demo units out before release, or do I have to wait until the 24th to set my eyes on the EVO 3D?

no problem man. Some higher volume stores will probably have demo fixtures but they wont be out until atleast launch day. I would call and check with your local store before going down.

How's it going guys, im usually just a lurker here but today I had the opportunity to play with the evo 3d for about an hour and half. Im a radioshack store manager and our sprint rep was good enough to bring the phone by for us to check out, he got his demo unit this morning so I imagine it is a final version of the phone.

Hi Pabuzalaf,

Yes, welcome to the forums! We definitely appreciate the time you took to share with us your impressions of the phone. I can't help but think of some of these popular review sites like movie critics; they like to hear themselves talk. Good to hear from someone more down to earth.

Call quality is definitely a concern; I do use my phone as a phone quite a bit for work. I'm frequently on speakerphone, and I want to be able to hear clearly as well as be heard clearly. If you get a chance to do a test on an activated phone, please do share your findings.

Much appreciated!

This is the most shady Engadget review I have ever seen. This is the only review I have seen that has said any of these negative things. Something's up with Engadget... Very Fishy -_-

I'm not really worried, I played for one for a few minutes a few weeks back and liked what I saw.

I have a feeling that a lot of these reviewers have made a bit of a career out of complaining about the state of 3D today and how it is nothing more than a gimmick. Then along comes a phone that touts 3D and they feel that if they praise it too strongly it will make them look foolish for their past claims that 3D is a gimmick that will die out quickly. So they end up piling on a little more than is fair, overcompensating a bit too much, so that they won't rate the phone too highly. It looks like they were scrambling to find other things to complain about so it wouldn't be too obvious that they were just slamming it for offering 3D.

This, along with the Evo 3D being the successor to a really iconic phone... a lot of psychological factors are coming into play here. Note that every review had to preface with how awesome the Evo 4G was. I was getting sick of reading those intro paragraphs.

Engadget review mentioned something about the cover lens having some sort of distorting effect on the pictures. As a reviewer, wouldn't the next step be to remove the cover and take a picture to make sure? If possible?

Wow, this is a big concern. I just moved to Sprint from Verizon. I got a Nexus S 4G and I don't like it... I really want to like the E3D, but if call quality sucks, I'm out. What other options do I have at this point? Perhaps I should look for a used EVO4G and wait for something else?

Perhaps an EVO4G rooted. With Sense 2.1/3.0 mix. Yeah, that's the ticket. Someone local with a "like new" EVO4G for $180... Decisions Decisions...

Thats a very interesting observation. It is true though, for some reason with this phone there is alot of psychological factors being thrown into the overall reviews, how strange. Now that you mention the Evo 4G thing they pretty much all do have some mention of it, and some mention of the Sensation as well. I almost wish for a phone that could just stand on its own. Instead there is so much repetition and bleed over from the myriad of other phones its impossible to avoid.

Big thank you to you for keeping all the reviews organized like this. Its tough when people don't seem to see the stickies or get the concept of centralizing the chatter to one area for everyones sanity. But I do appreciate the work you guys are doing to fight the flood.

That is a really good idea. I noticed the problem big time on the Phone Scoop review pictures (see my post above), it is quite troubling to me. I didn't know quite what to call it or think that the problem could lie in the materials themselves. If it really is indeed a manufacturing/materials problem does HTC owe it to us to revise their design for future builds?

After I thought about Engadget's findings I was ruminating on the idea of removing the glass/plastic and custom cutting something better and more optical if I get this phone. I dream big, question is will I follow through on it.

Doesn't make me wanna rush to get my 3vo that's for sure.

What smartphone would you want to rush out and get, then... based Solely on an Engadget review?

Personally, I cant think of one phone since the iPhone4 that Engadget has said anything really good about. If its got the half-eaten fruit sticker, Engadget always gives it an extra point or two.

Check out their review of the galaxy s2. They also compare every new phone to it.

So, what's the story on the recording in 1080p?

Engadget said NO, and several people said this is wrong.

I think Engadget is actually right. Sprint has it listed as 720p recording and up to 1080p Playback (not recording)

When they announced the phone they said 720p recording in 3D and 1080p in 2D. You can't do 1080p playback if you didn't record it in 1080p unless it's just being upscaled which is totally different than recording.

I am aware of all of that. This is directly from Sprint's specs "HD video capture at 720p and playback up to 1080p" whatever that means. My point was they stopped listing 1080p recording.

Kind of an odd thing to take off don't u think? aren't other HTC phones recording in 1080p?

The Engadget review was brutal lol... watching & reading was like watching your best friend get punched in the face over and over... I can't figure out why they contradicted the other reviews in so many areas and had such an overall negative opinion about the device.

As for recording resolution, I really could care less. My largest priority is to make phone calls on the device reliably. It's my only phone. So call quality issues do concern me... Other priorities are a large beautiful display, a fast user experience, and quick updates.

The only other issue I must admit worries me is that the cameras in the back are indeed raised. I foresee many repairs from scratches to the glass back there unless this is addressed.

Well reading through these postings, especially the one from the RS manager, Im feeling a little better after getting my heart crushed from these reviewers. Im coming from a Hero whos battery lasts less than a day and I don't have 4g as an option on it, so I really don't think I could be all that disappointed with the E3D, I just hope the 2D 5mp camera is better than my Hero's 5mp. Also on the whole topic of no 1080p recording, its not that big of a deal from a phone. I have a Kodak waterproof HD video camera thats the same size as a cell phone, I never use the 1080 resolution because any hand shake makes the video look like crap so I always use 720 and to me it still looks just as amazing, I feel like we've all grown too obsessed with numbers.

On a side note, I don't see any postings regarding what good and evo has posted about the bootloader still being locked on a freshly opened retail box. Anyone want to chime in on this-- guess it should be a new topic. http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all...-e3d-bootloader-still-locked.html#post2829452
