Evo 3D 'pro' reviews

I was able to play with an Nintendo 3DS, and I know exactly what these reviewers are complaining about. If you look at the screen straight on, the 3D effect appears almost effortlessly. But if you tilt the screen a little, suddenly you see double ghosty images on the screen, and it's disorienting, because your eyes don't know what to focus on. It can cause eye strain.

For video and images, I don't see this as a problem. But for playing games, where it might be natural to tilt the phone to control the game, that could be a problem.

Valid point. When I would try to view 3D content off of a paper I would shift my head but not the paper to view it at an angle. I can see why you are saying its hard for video game players to play a game in 3D. I just hope as you play the game more and more your eyes can keep up with the shifting of the phone. Probably not possible and I'm no eye doc.

Just curious if you are referring to a site that starts with a "C" and ends with a "NET"? :D

Haha no never. Maybe in the past but they have gotten over their love of the Mighty Fruit and are usually pretty fair. There is one, that sounds like the star Gremlin in Gremlins, that can't hide their love affair with anything i.

Well I have to get rid of my blackberry so I will be getting this. That being said and being a little paranoid about the reviews does anyone know if you order a phone online if you want to return it if you have to send it back to sprint or if you can exchange it at a Sprint store?

Based on the Evo 3D reviews, besides the call quality, camera quality, screen quality and battery life, it seems pretty solid.

Pretty awful review, and I don't mean the commentary on the Evo3D either.

No actual pics to illustrate camera quality compared to the Sensation

No attaching the Evo3D to a big screen TV with surround sound to show off the multimedia abilities. If you aren't going to do that, then what the hell is the point? You don't drive a Porsche and drive it like a Civic. Push the abilities for lord's sake.

No actual demo of video camera quality compared to the Sensation, just insisting that 8MP is better than 5MP, which everyone knows is not true.

Turning the screen nearly completely away and saying the viewing angles need work? Who looks at their phone like that? I know I don't. The only time I look at any screen like that is because I show up 20 minutes late to the move theater.

References to 3D content, or methods for getting 3D content? Zero. Is Blockbuster supported, or Netflix or anything? Who knows? Reviewer was too worried about how the buttons feel.

How do games run compared to the Tegra? Who knows? Not the reviewer? Do the games run well during HDMI mirroring? Eh, who cares. That isn't important is it?

All in all, this is a HORRIBLE review, and it seems like the reviewer wasn't interested in the device, or the actual abilities. I'll say right now, if you intend to use the Evo3D like an HTC Hero, just stick with the Hero.

If the Evo3D had the ability to replace cable boxes, or blue ray players, or a PS3 for HD video/3D video we would have no idea. This is what is most interesting about the Evo3D. It's a full on entertainment hub in your hand, which is a concept that might be too high for people that make their decisions based upon quadrant scores...

Enjoy!

Thanks. I did see that but I just didn't know if obtaining the return authorization meant that it had to be mailed back in or that you would ultimately be able to take it to a store.

And I'm sure it will be :)

I love pre-launch threads...all the energy and excitement about the new tech...all the doubt that it will measure up to the hype.

My prediction of this phone: 3D will be all the rage for a couple of weeks...battery life threads will run rampant...and when the dust settles, you'll be left with a solid dual core phone with a nice screen that most people will be pretty happy with. :)

It says to return it to the Original Point of Purchase, so purchased in Store you must return to that Store. Online must be returned directly back to them. At least this is how I read that.

Say it ain't so. This means we will have to help people with their phones because those who don't have an EVO but picks up the 3D may complain about stuff we know how to fix. Like keeping mobile data and 4G off to save battery power.

Have you guys looked at all the unanswered questions in the EVO 4G forum since we have migrated over here.

As one might reasonably expect from a highly overpopular, Apple-slanted consumer electronics blog, the ever obliging individuals at Engadget have taken great delight in senselessly demolishing the Evo 3D in their recent review (today, as of this posting).
HTC EVO 3D review -- Engadget

Some grave grievances I have with this review:

  1. They claim poorer battery life than the HTC Sensation (without sufficiently qualifying their usage, their data coverage, etc). This is obviously absurd if the 3D parallax boundary takes up on the order of a milliwat when in use, given the phone packs a larger battery and nearly identical internal (and external) specs to the latter! I am willing to bet the reviewer simply did something nasty in his settings (maybe leaving all the radios on with hotspot, etc in a poor-signal area with a phantom background app stealing CPU cycles). This review's treatment of battery life is highly unscientific and seems downright implausible.
  2. They rate the screen as being "lower in quality" (a ridiculous qualitative assessment without a smidgeon of factual grounding) to other PenTile screens or lower-res screens. "The 'display performance' still lags behind the competition" --> What is the basis of such a baffling (and inherently ridiculous) claim? What is "display performance," exactly? Who are these guys? Do they need fisher-price oversaturated colors to appease them? Have they even tried looking at text with the likes of a QVGA PenTile screen? If so, I don't get it.
  3. They criticize the camera, even though the 2D picture quality looks almost identical to that of the Sensation (after scaling). Is it really worse than the 4GVO? I seriously doubt that. Seriously. There may be other interesting opportunities that await us with a dual-camera setup, too.
  4. The 7/10 rating seems unjustified given the SGS2's score on the same website.
Am I the only one who thinks these sorts of things?

You can't return a phone purchased online - instore, they will send you a return mailing kit for the 3D and you will have to mail it back.

In my opinion the Engadget review had an overall bad tone to it. You can tell the guy doing the review really doesn't like the phone. Especially at the end when he starts comparing it to other phones while making comments like "look at that, amazing!" or "not as thin as the iPhone"... Why does he spend like 5 minutes on viewing angles? Who views their phone at a constant 45 degree angle? Sorry... watching that frustrated me.

It was a woman with a very bad haircut doing review.

How's it going guys, im usually just a lurker here but today I had the opportunity to play with the evo 3d for about an hour and half. Im a radioshack store manager and our sprint rep was good enough to bring the phone by for us to check out, he got his demo unit this morning so I imagine it is a final version of the phone. Full disclosure, I currently use and love an evo 4g, before that I used a nexus one and before that a blackberry 9000. Ive had some pretty cool phones ! :) Im definitely an Android guy and I do like HTC Sense. I wouldnt say that im a fan bot though.

Anyway I was supremely impressed by the evo 3d. IMO it was noticeably zippier then the motorola atrix and the LG G2x(maybe this is sense 3.0 or the extra ram i dont know but it was extremely quick). My co workers agreed with me. Take that as you will. The screen was very attractive the combination of Super LCD and and qhd is definitely a winner imo, especially when the brightness is turned up all the way. I dont know that i would say its better then the Iphone 4's retina display but its in the same class. It seemed to be that the screen was more vibrant then other duel core phones out there currently that ive seen(specificially the atrix and the g2x.)

The camera is in a word awesome. Atleast as good as the Iphone 4's imo. The shutter button really really enhances the cameras feel. That really cant be stated enough. Its definitely gonna please casual photographers. The 3d element was imo opinion quite enjoyable. Its definitely not forced on you which is nice, but its no gimmick. The 3d is fun addition and within 15 mins of playing with it we were making some pretty cool little 3d videos. I would say that certain "things" are more appropriate for 3d pictures then others. I dont know that a family photo is gonna be great for 3d but if you wanted to focus in on a specific object its pretty cool. Anyway if one doesnt like it its easy enough to just not use.

The spider man game was OK. Green hornet looked really good. Was very impressed with the 3d video play back. The viewing angle was limited but you know for a 4.3 inch screen im not sure what some of these reviewers were expecting. Its on par with the nintendo 3ds. I cant speak to the call quality because the unit was not activated yet and obviously 1.5 hours isnt enough to judge the battery. From what i saw though it seemed to hang in there certainly it did not discharge as poorly as the evo 4g. I suppose thats some sort of improvement. One more thing is wanna hit on. The phone looks and feels fantastic. I really did like the ridges on the back. Its a very very solid feeling phone and I was very happy with how it felt overall. No complaints on that count. The top bezel was imo very attractive. IMO alot of the more recent android phones have kind of a futuristic look to them. Thats fine alot of them look great, but i appreciate the subtle imo business like look the evo 3d has. Just my 2 cents.

Anyway I just wanted to share my thoughts. Some of these reveiws especially engadgets are almost cartoonish they're so negative. To me that specific one was not impartial. The guy just seems to have some issue with the sense UI. I play with pretty much all the smart phones atleast a little bit and came away very very impressed with the evo 3d. I dont think anyone who picks one up will be disappointed.

It is what it is, bad earpiece. Maybe you can tinker with it using DSPManger which is implemented in most rooted roms now, maybe a firmware update, maybe you shouldn't be holding the phone so close to your head anyhow! Radiation! =]

But i have yet to find any good wired headset to use with HTC devices, one from my previous blackberry works okay.

Welcome to the forums!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, they're definitely encouraging (and more in line with what I expected) than the Engadget review in particular.

Does Radioshack put demo units out before release, or do I have to wait until the 24th to set my eyes on the EVO 3D?

I completely agree. The entire review was negative from the start and it got down right ridiculous when he pulled out the other phone for "comparison" just to compliment them.
I mean, just read this:
But our biggest gripe with the EVO 3D is its terrible battery life, which is even worse than what we observed on the already lackluster EVO 4G. We're not convinced 3D is fully baked yet -- we'll wait and see how it develops beyond the initial "gee wiz" stage. Ultimately, the EVO 3D is a Sensation with a lesser camera, cheaper materials, worse battery life, and without the ability to roam worldwide. But hey, it's got 3D and the best dedicated two-stage camera button that's ever graced a phone. That's worth something, right?
Do I detect sarcasm there at the end? Sheesh...
