Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Hi all, I'm a newbie so bear with me. After reading so many forums when the update was first released, I was afraid to update my Evo 4G. So i deliberately waited to see if there were any issues. I did come across a small group of HTC EVO 4G owners who never rooted their phone, say they did a factory reset first, downloaded the update, then another factory reset and never experienced any voicemail notification issues or any other problems. I was still sceptic so on June 11th I did what they did and so far by the grace of God, knock-on-wood, I've had no issues either. Things are working fine. I noticed some of you mentioned something about the PRL and Hardware version. My PRL is 01115 and Hardware is 0004, not sure if this has anything to do with the recent issues but I hope I was able to help solve any curiosity as to the whole factory reset suggestion. I want to say thank you to everyone on this site who has ever posted advice to fellow EVO users. @EarlyMon, you are very informative, you seem to know your stuff, thank you. I've read previous posts by you b4 I joined when I had my first EVO (I was robbed for my first Evo on the bus, SMH, crazy right? Dummy didn't realize it's a Sprint phone and not easy to just change a SIM card lol)but anyway your advice given about little issues I had was very helpful thank you. Hope I was able to help anyone having issues.

It's interesting that you mention not having any of the issues that have been mentioned. I didn't end up hard resetting and aside from the app issues (e.g. netflix and pandora) mentioned, I haven't had any of the phone related issues either.

My main concern now is actually if HTC/Sprint's fixes will cause phones that didn't have issues, to now has issues, when they release the new update. We'll have to wait and see.

Go to settings and press the search button. A text box should come up at the top. Type any letter and all your setting will show up. Another hidden one is the power saver function. You can customize it.

You guys that say you have no issues, does your compass work? Try google Sky.
How about voice functions, search, etc? Those are the only two I ever had and I didn't do anything special.

I updated my phone yesterday and noticed that now the battery will overheat at random times (I first noticed it while playing a game and again while it was sitting idle on my hip). Has anyone else experienced this?

Compass works fine. voice calling works fine, so I'm assuming choice search is ok.

EVO was working fine other than the app icons in folders deal. Now when I update apps or install new ones then go back to my homescreen, it goes to the white loading screen with green HTC. Awesome. Already did a factory reset after update.

I have also noticed my phone getting hotter than normal, though it has only been during moderate use. It hasn't happened during idle... yet.

I just checked out my compass. It cannot find east or north no matter which was it is facing. I opened up the digital compass and see that I can only go from about 217 degrees up to 290, with nothing over or under that range.

Scratch the above. I can find north and east now. Not in a normal way we all expect though. It almost seems (after some googling) that the compass has turned into a "dip compass". This type of compass moves its needle vertically, not horizontally. So if I hold my phone with the power button end up, it will show North.

Ok, I keep finding out new information. At least on my phone, if I open up the compass, click menu --> settings --> uncheck the box next to "Display True North" and your compass should work normal.

Not on mine :(

Not matter what settings I change in the compass app or Google Sky, relating to Sensor type, damping or update, True North etc., The compass refuses to act like a compass! If I hold the phone flat, the dial shakes and judders all over the place and doesn't point anywhere. If I hold it vertically so the power button is uppermost, then it always puts South upwards and doesn't move when I rotate.

If it's not a software issue, it's a big coincidence that my sensor died the same time as the update was applied, along with everyone else's sensor!

This is a very long thread so I hope this hasn't been mentioned already. Why would there be such a difference in the update for the EVO vs the EVO Shift? I have held both in my hands and it looks like the Shift got the better update. I thought it would be the same. anyone have an explanation?

@drexappeal, Stay outta my head. I was wondering the same thing too. I hope we don't experience any issues with the so called tweaked update. I'll just do my research and see if those that didn't have an issue before I followed what they did, are now having one after the latest update. I'll let you guys know.

Well I wish I knew how.

Before using Sky (especially), open catch.com Compass (free, Market), and calibrate it by sweeping parallel to the ground in a figure 8 - large as your arm can conveniently do it. Try to stay smooth in the motion, not fast or slow. When it's calibrated, the phone will vibrate in your hand. Back out, go to Sky - everything should stabilize at that point.

Maps can do well once moving. If just sitting stationary, perform same process with compass.

Hope this helps.

Yeah maps work OK, no luck with the compass or sky still though, compass gives the excessive magnetic interference error every time you open it or change a setting, and it plain does not move at all, regardless of calibration routine. Same behavior before I did a hard reset, same now. It's a bummer.

Try pulling your battery for 60 seconds.

Please don't be offended - but not in close proximity to any very large bits of metal or other EM interference when you try that, I presume.

After that, try to uninstall and re-install compass.

I would really like to know the same thing.. My wife has the Evo 4G and I have the Evo Shift - the Shift Gingerbread update is amazing! 10 times better than the Gingerbread update for the Evo 4G.. What the heck?

Installed GB now I cannot pick up my router thats only set to broadcast wireless N. If I switch to broadcast B & G the wireless works fine except for the fact it has less range.
