Root Unroot EVO 4G

I flashed Unrevoked Forever ROM, but I still see the Super Users Permissions icon under Applications. Is my phone really really unrooted?
 
well unrooting is a two step process.
1.you flash the unrevoked foreverson tool
2.then you install the PC36IMG file for your hboot

have you read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide? there is an unrooting section. that has very detailed instructions on how to do it. if you have any questions about unrooting please feel free to ask.

just out of curiosity, why do you want to unroot? if you accept the gingerbread ota you can't re-root your phone. there is no current exploit for the new hboot.

ok just making sure. a lot of people think that they can unroot accept the ota then re-root. but that is not possible. well the forums is here if you need additional help unrooting your phone. just ask away.
 
I am having trouble un-rooting my HTC Evo 4G (Supersonic). I tried to follow the instructions in the Rooting for Dummies for GB but somehow managed to get S-On but still have CM7 and I seem to be stuck with it. Now I can't get it to flash PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_209995_signed.zip. I did rename it to PC36IMG.zip. The HBoot acts like it is loading the zip but never prompts me to flash it. Can I go into CWM and flash it manually from there? I wiped the cache partition but should I also wipe/factory reset the phone?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try running the other ruu that is found in the guide. it is an exe file that you run on the computer. just connect the phone when it prompts you to. make sure that you have usb debugging turned on.
 
Unfortunately I don't have a computer that runs Windows. All Debian GNU/Linux or its derivatives.
I did remember that I did a backup from CWM immediately after gaining S-Off. Trying to restore that for now.
 
I had the same problem you had. Unfortunately the only thing that worked for me was the RUU.exe

What about using a public computer? At a library or something? I'm sure you could put the .exe on a flash drive and run it from there.
 
Looks like I have a bad download of PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_ 2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_209995_signed.zip. I'll try to download it again.
 
My radio version matches. Tried to use the RUU but it doesn't detect my phone. Using the USB cable that came with my Evo. Cable works for mass storage device. HTC Sync couldn't detect the phone either. I'm going to try it on another computer. Any other suggestions?

Are you trying to unroot?
 
HBoot is 6.17, RUU is RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_209995_signed

At this point, the RUU doesn't matter. HTC Sync won't recognize the phone. RUU won't work until HTC Sync can see the phone. I somehow got S-On with the unrevoked HBoot still on the phone. I have not been able to get a PC36IMG.zip downloaded correctly. Somehow the checksum never matches. I'm about to ask Sprint if they have a way to return it to stock.
 
I've tried it with and without HTC Sync installed. the RUU won't even run if HTC Sync is not installed. IF there was instructions to do it with adb, that might work better than these other suggestions. I'm more comfortable with the command line anyway because I don't use Windows at home anyway. The RUU (and HTC Sync) can't see that the phone is connected.
 
I finally got it. There was a step involving FASTBOOT that is included in other methods of un-rooting. Once I included that I was able to successfully un-root. The RUU I used was not the most recent so I had to get an OTA update after these steps to bring me current. Here are the steps that worked for me.

1. Download RUU for the correct radio (baseband) version
2. Boot to the bootloader
3. Select FASTBOOT and press the power button
4. Use the USB cable to connect the phone to the computer and wait for the phone to show FASTBOOT USB
5. Run the RUU

oh how i long for the eng bootloader like you have. it would make a lot of things easier. thanx for posting this info. not sure if many of us still haave the older hboot like that.
