Help Camera clicking noise, normal?

mikkk

Lurker
My phone makes clicking noise whenever I turn on the camera, is that normal? it happened after I took a picture with roidizer. I've tried uninstalling the app and messing with the sounds but the clicking noise is still there. I've had this for for about a week and I wasnt aware there was clicking noise before.

u mean the default camera app? and are u talking about the 'shutter sound' when u actually take a pic? coz thats normal. but there shoudnt be any sound when u just open the app

Nope not the shutter sound. It sounds more like a click (hardware problem?) and I noticed the lenses moving in and out as well whenever I open any camera app.

I have this also, its just the lens adjusting ready to focus from rest when your activate the camera app. Its nothing to worry about.

I don't think it's anything to do with the focus.

Mine does it too. It's a very quiet tick tick sound that I can hear before any picture appears on screen and before the phone has made any attempt to focus.

I don't know why it does it, but it just sounds like a startup sound. I certainly don't think it's anything to worry about.

oh i just held the phone to my ear just now n turned on the app n i heard it too .. a very faint sound, i didnt notice it before. lol. yeah, i guess its normal, i have it too :)

What I meant was is that it is the lens moving from its rest position to its focus position to get ready to focus. Soon that when the first image appears when you open the app is mildly in focus.

That's interesting. I know a fair bit about cameras (I own a decent DSLR) but very little about the cameras in phones and how they focus.

I had assumed (without thinking about it much) that they focussed by deforming the lens rather than moving backwards and forwards. Does it definitely work by moving the lens?

I'm not suggesting you're wrong (as I said above, this isn't my area) but the phone is so thin, there isn't much room for movement. Presumably any movement cannot be much more than a 1mm or so.

Don't know the ins and outs of camera phone focusing, but the noise is related to focusing, its normal and nothing to worry about.

This is the reply I got from samsung reps:

The camera should not be making a clicking noise unless the lens is
opening on some Samsung handsets.

Because the handset is so new we can have the handset assessed by one of
our repair agents and if they find a fault then we have have it repaired
or replaced.

:/ doesnt sound right but i dont want to be phoneless for two weeks either

I suspect that they are just wrong about this. We all seem to have the noise and I've heard a LOT of dodgy noises coming from a lot of equipment over the years and this definitely does not sound like something is wrong.

I could be wrong of course (there's a first time for everything ;)) but I'm certainly not worried about this.

As suggested by others, it's just the normal action of the lens "unparking". You can actually see it move into position if you look carefully.

Presumably any movement cannot be much more than a 1mm or so.

Given the miniscule sensor and tiny lens aperture in these things, that's all that's needed. Any focus adjustment will be minor due to the large depth-of-field. Think 10mm @ f/22 on your dSLR! :)

Trouble is I'm getting that noise when the phone is off and just sitting on the table. This can't be right??

I'm getting the clicking when opening the camera app which is normal. However, it can't be right when the phone is in standby just sitting there??

In case anyone asks, this is even if the are no running processes or applications.

Definitely doesn't sound right. Can you see if the lens is moving?

omg...thank you for making me notice something i didnt before :/

yes +1, mine does it too. now i notice it, it loud as lol.

TBH I would take the Samsung reply with a pinch of salt, I have had a couple of queries for them and they just don't seem to know what their talking about, and just read a line from their FAQ to reply, maybe their tech support needs and upgrade, or just bad translation.

I also have this noise and I don't think its anything to be worried about.

Yep, mine does it to, but i noticed something when flashed to KG5 from KF3 (i guess), well in KF3 2.3.3 when i opened stock camera app or a LED flashlight app, camera lens clicked twice, but in KG5 2.3.4 clicking only once

I get the tick tick with mine and I did notice it straight away but always knew it was a normal function of using the camera.

I'd actually be more worried if I didn't hear the tick...

And as previously confirmed the tick is the movement of the lense.

My wife has the same phone as me, but i dont think her's has the same software version. point being is that i can see the lens move when i activate the camera on her phone but there is now clicking sound.

ive checked 2 other guys phones at work, they are on different firmware and one has absolutly NO sound what so ever, and the other one is very quite, nowhere near as loud as mine.

strange. ill have to wait till another firmware update and see any difference.

EDIT = low and behold a new firmware just got released for me, no change :(. click noise is still there. (from KF4 to KH1)
