Root updating build number etc

I am working on a custom 2.3 based rom to use on my tablet and i was wondering how to change the build numbers etc so that it will reflect the fact it is a gingerbread rom? Sorry if im a noob at this and am missing something blatantly obvious.

If I understand this correctly your working on a Gingerbread ROM both on and for a tablet? What tablet do you have so we can direct you to the correct part of the forum for your device? This is the LG Ally section.

well its an old dell with the flip around touchscreen and if it worked i was gonna try to finish my other project of hacking the 3.0 rc4 kernel into my android rom for use on the ally so im not really sure where i belong

If it's for the Ally then this is the right place, It's beyond my limited knowledge, but there are several on here who could probably help you out. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

If you were working ona custom 2.3 rom wouldn't its build number be 2.3.x already since its a 2.3 rom.

the build number is all messed up if i used the stock 2.3 kernel that i was using as a base it works fine as soon as i inject the 3.0rc4 kernel into the rom from kernel.org i get random build numbers ranging from 2.5 to 4.0

Well you'd edit the build number in the build.prop

You can find it in /system/
