If I intend on rooting this and using (for now) the stock rooted ROM, what does a recovery do, how do I get it/use it, and why is it good to have? I want to make this phone my own, and I'm going to be asking many questions along the way until I get it.

Actually, Comic Sans still cracks me up - I liked the last April Fool's day when Google went for it whole hog. :D

Welp - you bought the deal - I got you credit on Phandroid, and you changed your font.
I can't ask for more, honestly. :D :D

It's your fallback position to a working rom in case you bork something while rooting.

Also, the name of the component that allows you make full image backups, aka, nandroids.

OK here how about now is it easier to read now, I simply like different font, LOL

question is if someone will port/create a recovery in time for the root exploit or not.

And something tells me you're going to have to live with Sense for a while longer post-root :)

I would expect 2-4 weeks until we even get a cm port with all the work with drivers and such to be done. Remember the evo was rooted well before its official release so it had a head start. But the folks over at cm are pretty diligent

Alright, so it's just having a backup. Backup=Recovery. Note taken. :D

Also, I thought scientific progress went "Boink?"

recovery= gui that has permissions to read and or write to all aspects of the phone. you do backups through recovery and you flash roms in recovery as well as a host of other things

here is a page all about it. clockwork mod is just a type of recovery like centos is to linux
What Is ClockworkMod Recovery And How To Use It On Android [Complete Guide]

Yes you need to root to be able to flash recovery, but I will not root unless I am sure we can flash a recovery, I want to make sure even if I stay stock, that I can back up, I will worry about flashing afterwards.

Right but assume if you update to this rom via bootloader then it updates your rom with a rooted version?
no, you need an eng or unlocked bootloader to flash a recovery to flash a rom. this rom will not be signed with htc's encryption key so it will fail if you try to flash it as a pg86img.zip. you can try but it will fail.

Yes, until root details are given and Clockwork can be installed, flashing any ROM that isn't signed by HTC will fail.

They also have only uploaded the Deodexed version. I don't know how things work in HTC land, but in Motorola land, we typically woud have to flash the base ROM then flash the deodexed version over it.

the rom itself it deodoxed, its all you need to flash

Sweet, I like simplicity. Flashing Moto ROMs got to be a checklist. Flash these 3 zips, reboot, wipe the device, reboot into CWM, flash the deodexer...
