Possible Fixes For Freezing/Rebooting Issue.

benalmighty

Android Enthusiast
Hello. Ive had this phone for a little less than 2 weeks now, and its sad to say not even 1 hour after I first turned it on, it reboot itself. Since then its been constantly doing it all day, everyday. I'm sure I'm not the only one facing this issue. So I've been reading posts on this forum and others.
Like this one.
The idea to return the phone has popped into my mind a few times, but I'm always one the go and in constant need of communication, the time it would take for a replace would ruin me. (plus the added chance of getting another malfunctioning phone...ugh.)

Personally, I've been scouting out fixes (kinda) for this issue.
I've found a few that other people have suggested:
1. Uninstalling everything and doing a factory restore. (did not work for me.)
2. Removing all 3rd party apps. (did not work for me.)
3. Rooting and removing Metro's crappware.
To be honest i think it made my phone worse, but worth getting rid of Easy Wi-Fi. :D
4. Rooting and flashing a rom. (Personally, I find this too risky.)
5. Updating through LG. I heard it worked for a few people.
6. Running apps that prevent or kill processes and free memory. Like "task killer" or "memory booster". (I've used both, didn't help specifically, but it was still useful)
7. Launching a different "Home". I found this just a few mins ago and I am currently testing it now. I'll let you know how that goes later. (it says its for the Optimus Black, which im assuming has the same issues, though on the bottom of the post it says it works with Optimus M too)
Here is the Link.
8. Wait for 2.3 update. (lol.)
9. SD card failure. Remove, Reboot, Format, or Replace. (wasn't my issue)
10. The dreaded return. :( (more information on that is outlined in the first link)

From what I've read or seen, it seems one "fix" may work for someone but not someone else. I hope something works. (Or at least LG tries to fix this issue.)
I would like to see what you guys think, maybe more ideas for fixes.
This thread was made to post possible fixes for the LG Optimus M freeze/reboot issue, please maintain the topic.
Good Luck with your phone. And have a nice day.

The home launcher. Didn't really help specifically, but it did prevent home screen crashes and it showed a better ui than the stock one. Nevertheless my browsers continued to crash.

So I reluctantly decided to flash a rom.
And to be honest its not very hard to do.
Back Up everything you can.
Find a rom that works for you.
And flash.
I used Joneidy's rom.
It looks spectacular compared to the stock ui.
And so far no freezes of reboots.
So I'll keep you updated on how it goes.
Have a nice day.

If you had came forward first, we would've informed you that you got a bad phone. There are Optimus phones out there with this defect. In most cases, we tell anyone within their store warranty to take it back for a replacement until they get a functional phone. For a few, a new ROM will fix it while others are stuck playing replacement hopscotch.

Well Thanks for that bit of information. For the past week I've been on forums and post. It all seems to be the same issue with different causes or effects.
A few people have even posted a few videos on youtube showing their fixes for this issue.
As for myself, I will test this rom out, I honestly hope it fixes the bug.
But if it does, I guess i have a lot of phone calls to make. Lol.
I'll remain as calm as possible and try to help out other on the way.
Anyways, thanks, and have a nice day.

One quick test is to simply open the Market and Browser at the same time without either process ending/sleeping. To do this use the Home key to return to your home screen and launch the other app instead of the back key, which exits/sleeps an app. If both run simultaneously, you're off to a good start. Next, attempt to run any of the market's higher end games. If you play Angry Birds, that will do as well.

My reboots have been as bad as one every 5 minutes, doing ANYTHING from maps to texting to web browsing.

Trying the 2.2.2 update now, if that doesn't work I'll try to get it replaced.

EDIT: Hahah...I did a factory reset and it got to the "select your language" part before rebooting :P

Corporate store it is...

Edit Edit:
Wow...I've tried like 5 times I can't get paste the language/time/account setup after a reset...without it rebooting. :(

Oh that sucks. Yeah id definitely suggest a replace for that. :(
Mine has only rebooted twice since I installed the rom.
Which I am fine with. I think the rom actually helps prevent reboots from fc's, but it can't help them all. Mostly it's just in the browsers for me.
But yeah you should contact someone. Again, the first link goes to a similar thread and I believe someone posted about possible ways of contacting Metro and Lg for replacements.
Nevertheless I hope you get a working phone soon.

I've tried everything, including custom ROM/home screen. I guess mines just worse than usual.

Luckily I still have a warranty until Christmas, so I'm going to continue to get it replaced until it doesn't have the issue anymore.

I originally had the 2.2 stock one from 2010, which worked flawlessly. When I got it replaced for an unrelated issue, the replacement was a 2.2.1 stock, and had the rebooting/freezing issue.

I put in the order for a replacement for this new one, and it'll be here this saturday. Wish me luck!

To anyone having the problem, and none of these fixes working for you, just take it to an authorized dealer and try to get it replaced. Tell them that their customer service (over the phone) told you to come in an get it replaced. They helped me with no hassle, only a $10 shipping fee. In some cases, they may ask you to go to a corporate store.

Thanks for the info. :)
Also, did they check your phone when you brought it to the store?

Fortunately, I haven't had these re-booting problems a lot of people seem to have had. I got mine on Feb 25th (2 actually, one for me and one for my wife) and they came new with 2.2. At that point, I had been reading about a lot of the phones coming with 2.2.1. I'm glad we got the 2.2 phones.

if you DON'T really care about rooting (for now) i suggest updating to 2.2.2. My phone has not lagged nor frozen since i updated

My phone has already been rooted, and mostly all the stock apps have been removed, which I am glad for that.
But what I was wondering, If I update the phone, will all the stock apps return?

yes if you update all the stock apps will come back because the update was made to fix most freezing and restarting issues and ALSO to prevent us from rooting. That's why i said if you dont care about root right now you should update. But eventually someone will find a way to root it again:D check out the other threads regarding the update, most ppl are already working on rooting

Thanks. I'll keep working with this rom for the rest of the week.
If it doesn't work, I'll try the update. And if all else fails, I'll try the return.
Have a nice day. :)

The ones from a few months ago that shipped with 2.2 on them don't seem to have this issue. It's usually on the 2.2.1 versions. And upgrading to 2.2.2 didn't fix it for me, but it's worth a shot.

I took it to the metro place and told them about the issue (I also included how I googled it and it seemed to be a common issue) and they said they've seen the problem around. Luckily I was still within my 1 year warranty, also I pay the $5/month insurance on the phone, so they replaced it no problem. (This was the second replacement for my phone)

New one hasn't had a single problem yet, and for some reason seams a bit faster than the old one, even though I haven't rooted/removed anything yet. It came with 2.2.1.

EDIT:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :( My replacement....it froze and rebooted. I don't know what to do now. I guess I can try and see if they'll give me a different phone?

I never had those problems on my 2.2.1 stock optimus. Not running stock nor after changing to teamchickeneater. I am astounded with all the people that are.

MY best guess though the cpu is failing even at stock clocks because what your describing is what occurs when we overclock the phone more then it can handle.

try upgrading to 2.2.2. (it worked for me) if that doesnt fix it, take it back and get it replaced

Mobile Support download that and follow all the directions. after it installs open the program and connect your phone (or when prompted to do so) then when it says there's an update available get update and follow all directions. DO NOT unplug the phone while updating or you might brick your phone. after everything is done the phone will reboot (no data will be lost) and it might take a bit longer than usual (this is normal). then use your phone regularly to see if it fixed the issue(s). Anything else you need to know dont be afraid to ask!

Thanks to all of you posting info, tips and suggestion.

Also, the cpu fail idea, doesnt sound too far fetched.
Like Ive tried everything; root, rom, update. Idk what to do next.

Oh but I have noticed that the phone fcs/freezes and reboots
while LG Home is running. and not while its closed.
I use Launcher Pro, so I don't need LG Home, but it starts randomly.
So Im using a automatic task manager to see if that may actually
be the case. So far, it hasn't all day. Well I think it did once, yeah,
cause it fc'ed the manager before it could close LG Home. Lol.

Im on 2.2.2, but if LG Home is the problem in my case, im wondering
why it would still free/reboot with the sense rom.

Anyways, I'll continue testing ideas. And if by any chance I find a
"fix" I'll post it. but again, there may be different fixes for each person.
So, I guess just try something, oh and remember to back up. haha. ;)
Have a nice day.

Oh also one way to test to see if you're phone is freezing/rebooting from the home screen or while you're not using it; put it on a non-default screen while you're not using it, like if you walk away while it is charging or if you are driving. If you find it on the default home screen when you use it again, chances are, it rebooted. That has happened to me like twice now, so I put my phone to sleep on the 3rd screen. Sad, right?

First Optimus M [2.2 got it on Christmas] - Service stopped working, got it replaced

Second Optimus M [2.2.1] - Freezing/rebooting as soon as I got it. Decided to take it back.

Third Optimus M [2.2.1] - Same as second one...wtf. Ordered another replacement.

^ all of this within the past month

Picking up the fourth one in a couple hours from the metro place. Wish me luck. And yeah, I've tried root, roms, upgrading, different home launcher, everything on all of them.

I absolutely love this phone! I just need one that works! I've been very unlucky with my replacements.

All of my replacements are covered with a warranty, so it's not costing me anything except a $10 shipping fee each time.

An idea though: Everytime I get it replaced, they take my old battery out and put it in the new replacement phone. What if it's an issue with the battery?

tell them you want the new battery this next replacement
Luckily the guy at the place I go is very understanding a kind, he said he would waive the $10 everytime until I get a working one. He also says he knows about the freezing/rebooting problem, and has suggested an Advanced Task Killer, but he saw I already had it installed, and it wasn't doing the trick.

I'll tell him my idea about the battery, and see if I can get another one.
