OK, i have a Thunderbolt. LOVE IT. battery issue and all. i can squeeze a FULL day out of it and i'm fine.

i have 3 accounts on my line, and 2 are upgradeable.
1 Data w/ unlimited LTE
2 dumb phones

if i upgrade my LTE line do i have to sign a new contract with that dumb tier stuff?

can i upgrade a dumb phone and switch it to my line?

i'm interested with the Bionic cause i'm a phone junkie and new is new!

any help?

If you have unlimited AND a smartphone, you keep the unlimited.
If you have a dumbphone, you get tiered data.
If you don't have unlimited AND any other phone, you get tiered.

New contracts are tiered.
Verizon treats 3G and LTE the same, upgrading or downgrading between G's does nothing.

Hopefully this helps you, and others.

If you get a new phone on the unlimited data line (assuming you are eligible for one, or will pay for the phone).. you will keep your unlimited data. It's a contract renewal.

If you upgrade a dumb phone line, you will have to get a new data plan.. all of which required a tiered option.

You can transfer the upgrade to your account, keep the unlimited data on your line and get a new device like the Bionic. However, whatever line the TB winds up on will be tiered data.

Basically, no matter how you slice it, you'll have one line of unlimited and the other can only be tiered.

Everyone in here is right but I just wanted to clarify a little bit.

1. Your line with the Thunderbolt is grandfathered into unlimited data. The only possible way to lose this unlimited data is to remove it off the account yourself. From that point on you will be unable to get unlimited data anymore.

2. If ANY line on your account is eligible for an upgrade, you can use that upgrade on ANY line. It will extend the contract of the eligible line, but the device can go wherever. You don't have to "switch the phone" as you put it. Just go into the store and say you want to use the dumb phone's upgrade for your line.

3. If you intend to use that Thunderbolt on one of the 2 dumb phone lines, you will need to add a data package. This package will be tiered.

Kinda just repeating what the people above me said but I like to leave no room for confusion :)

Or if the dumb phones belong to people who will continue using them.. like say my parents you can Get bionic on that line (with tiered data) transfer Bionic to primary line with unlimited data. Reactivate dumb phone on Line 2 dropping the no longer needed data plan, and then sell Thunderbolt on eBay.

Trust me, I take advantage of Mom's upgrades.

This is wrong. While the outcome will be the same, when you use an alternate upgrade you don't change the equipment on the line at all. The Dumb phone line will simply have it's contract extended and the equipment on your smart phone line will be upgraded. You do NOT need to add a data package onto the dumb phone line in order to get a smart phone with that lines upgrade. The easiest way to think of it is that if ANY of your lines are eligible for an upgrade, it can be applied to to ANY of your lines. Not sure how to simplify it any more than that... :p

Who's on first?

I don't know.

Seriously. Who's on first?

Who?

Who?!

Months ago, I was told by Verizon that my wife's contract is up in February 2012, mine in April 2012. I assumed that meant that's when WE CAN UPGRADE. They explained to me at another location just days ago that since hers is the primary line on the account, she had been eligible at the end of June!

So, do you guys think that's enough for me to convince them that we could have gotten her upgraded and on the unlimited data plan then before it was gone, because of them not telling us the whole truth, and therefore they would have to call corporate to make an exception for us?

Sorry, this isn't an answer, but my question is along the same lines.

Oh yeah, I have an original droid with unlimited, she has a dumb phone, wants an iPhone probably (dark side alert!), so that would help to know.

Worth a shot. You never know. But this late in the game, perhaps not.

I might try the same thing with our dumb phone line.

Yeah, certainly nothing to lose in that case.

Is there any way to find out the information myself in the future as far as upgrade or contract renewal dates after logging into the Verizon site or from the app on my phone?

I would think they would make more money sooner if people could check and see, therefore getting themselves all worked up to when they can spend money.

I just reported what I had to do when I upgraded my last line. I used a 3rd party vendor who added that data plan to my dumb phone line, so I had to cancel it.

Regarding upgrades:

Log into My Verizon>Upgrade Device
It will show you your phones with their upgrade date.

You can also check your upgrade date by dialing #upt on your phone (just found this)

what am i planning on doing is adding a family plan on to my account with my mom and my dad whos contract ended on tmobile in july. im not due for an upgrade till 10/12 so im gonna give my mom my Incredible and just get my dad a cheap phone no internet. then im gonna get the bionic on the other line and hopefully transfer everything over from my Incredible and keep my unlimited data plan. should work....right?
