$299 for this phone? Destined to fail.

You must be new to phones and technology in general. Of course better phones will come out later. What do you think is gonna happen after you buy a Galaxy S2? A couple of months later the Moto Dinara comes out and makes the GS2 look like a piece of junk. Couple months later and something comes out that does the same to the Dinara. It's a never ending process and has been the same for many years.

Well, looks like you have't been following IT medias very well recently. There are plenty of sources if you are willing to search yourself. You can also ask any major IT media reporters, editors about it if they also think Bionic will be the only dual core LTE this year. I can find some for you if you wish.
Also have you not heard of HTC vigor, LG revolution 2, Samsung Celox, Nexus Prime? Prime is a little uncertain, but other three are most likely coming in Fall, which means they should have been in the work several months. Time will tell on this pretty soon...

Hmm did not realize HTC Vigor was LTE.

As for Celox. I seriously doubt it is coming this year. LG revolution 2? did not know it was confirmed for 2011 and specs are confirmed as well??

From wut i've follwed, Atrix dominated first half of this year. S2 came out in the middle and it dominated so far. it isnt unreasonable to think that Droid Bionic will dominate as LTE phone for only 3 months.

Since i have 2 phone upgrades available. I am prob gonna buy Bionic and wait for a better LTE phone next year. Either way makes no matter to me since i have 2 upgrades ready now.

I said enough on it. I'll leave it for you to research. Maybe others can help as well. If I get chance later, I will post something on them.

I had all but decided on skipping this phone and waiting for prime, vigor, or gs2 but this seals it. $299 for a phone that will be surpasses by 3 phones in about a month at the same price? That is absurd. I was really excited for this phone at one point but this completely kills it. If it were $199 and had simultaneous voice/data I might still consider the bionic. As is, this phone is dead to me. I can only assume many others will feel the same.

DROID Bionic Hits Verizon MAP at $299 Starting September 8 (Updated) - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

What makes you think that the vigor, gs2 or prime will be less than $299? Also, why can't you shop around and see if you can get the phone cheaper? Just because VZW is selling it for $299 doesn't mean it'll be priced the same at all the other places.

I don't think he thought they would be cheaper. To me his thought was he didn't want to pay 299 for the Bionic now when in three months these others phones will be out for the same price.

I look at it this way, if I want a phone badly enough I will get it. If it is worth the price to me, than that will justify the purchase. I do think 299 is getting high, but that is what Verizon seems to be setting as their standard.

Sure you have every right to pass on the Bionic, it should be a great phone and heck there might be something better out real soon. There will always be something better, and sometimes it can be better to wait for a device that is better for you or that you want more, but eventually you will have to make a decision.

Bionic isn't for everyone, I think Motorola is getting this phone out a little too late personally, but I think it will still be a great phone nonetheless.

i agree with several people on here that the specs and the hype to me justifies the price both at full retail and at contract price.

I too will be willing to pay full retail for this device on ONE condition. There has to be adequate Dev support for this phone. However with that said regardless of what Android device i get next i will almost certainly be paying full retail for it.

......
LTE is not dominant yet. and not wide spread. It simply does not warrant all out R&D from every other manufacturers

LTE is now available to half of all Americans, according to the official announcement from Verizon yesterday. If the plague was as extensive as LTE is at this point, we'd all be dead within a month.

Verizon now has 4G LTE coverage for over half of Americans

I don't think that manufacturers haven't known about this widespread coverage for quite some time.

And Sanjay said that Moto is coming out with another LTE device this year.
Motorola Mobility CEO highlights upcoming products | Wireless - CNET News

I just highly doubt that with LTE now available to over 160 million people, (185 million by year's end) no other manufacturer has been working on good LTE tech this year.

That has to be it....

I live in Georgia, and the only areas here showing up are the original spots - Atlanta and Athens. And the link I posted is live at VZW's site.

Funny how they go and mention that and yet it ain't showing diddly on their own home page....

$299 for the Bionic isnt a suprise to me at all. With the Droid Charge at $299, I don't know what other people thought his device would retail for.

I think of it like this, my OG Droid has given me the most utility out of anything I've ever owned. Ive had it since release and any phone I have going forward will get just as much use or even more. So for me to pay $300 for a phone that I am going to get a heck of a lot of use out of, I'm fine with that.

Like it has been mentioned previously, if you wait for whats rumored to be just ahead you will never buy anything. The way I look at it is this: If there is no ground breaking or earth shattering news on a new phone (Vigor, Prime, Droid HD) by the time the Bionic is released, then the Bionic will be my next device. If the Vigor is going to drop 4 weeks later and has a significant increase in specs etc then I might wait around, but my Droid is on its last legs, I can't wait much longer.

^^^^^^^^^ key - significant. Plus, I'm not too big on phones that don't have ample battery power either. Thin phones have to sacrifice something somewhere to be so thin, and I need power that will last, not something that will fit in my pocket.

Agreed, I would much rather go with the Bionic which will be a solid phone with a good battery life than get a Vigor with 20% gain in CPU with a 50% drain in battery for said CPU...

Not to mention the heat of a 1.5 GHz processor, it just doesn't make it worth the increased 20% performance over the Bionic.

I don't think any of us are saying that the Bionic, with it's cool specs, isn't worth $299. I think it is, personally. It's just that with so many rumors floating around for great October releases, with Samsung having two huge announcements on August 29 in New York and then again on September 1 in Berlin, with reports of the Samsung Prime roaming the halls at Verizon, it just makes some of us lean towards waiting and not getting the Bionic on drop day.

It's like if I'm thinking of buying a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, run of the mill house for $150,000 but suddenly hear that there is a neighbor down the street that will most likely sell his house in October for the exact same price but he has 3,000 more square feet, with prettier and new floors, a bigger backyard, and nicer curb appeal, I'm not going to jump on the first house just because it's a nice-enough house. I'm going to wait and see, and if the second guy decides not to sell, I can always slink back and crawl into the crappy first house.

On the other hand, if I was homeless or 2 days from being evicted, like some of you OG droid users are, it might be a different story.

Yes, but what do we really know? Yoda said awesome 15 hours+, but I don't think anyone here seriously believes that. I've read rumors about the battery being between 1735 mAh to 1900 mAh, which is a pretty big difference in speculations. The picture that Yoda finally released of the phone on 4G showed an almost dead battery (not that it means anything; he could have taken it at the end of the day, but it still wasn't the best image he could've put on there).

And for some reason no one, not even Yoda, has agreed to post a picture of the battery size.

If the Bionic ends up lasting 2 hours longer than the Charge or Thunderbolt, then what?

Then we can do 2 more hours of fiddeling, DUH! :p

Sounds like a man who's running low on ammo. :-)

Well, I was just running low on time to stay on computer last night, not ammo;)

Of course, those are not official announcements, but they look more than likely to come within this year. My point is that other big guys were not holding back on developing dual core LTE while Bionic has been in the work.

There is absolutely no news of Vigor getting LTE.....

Celox is not even rumored to be released anytime soon, so i wouldnt hold my breadth. That only leaves LG Revolution 2 which i doubt will be released this year or will suffer significant battery problem. i honestly dont see how that phone is going to support 1.5 Ghz when single core is has the crappiest battery length unless they have done extensive R&D. That is why i think i dont think it will be released anytime soon.

The Bionic will be (is) in a family of new Android devices that will evolve, even some coming out later this year.

But the differences between those others coming out this year or even the first q of next year, or even further on, and the Bionic won't be a quantum leap if much at all.

The Bionic looks to me to be the one to have for this year and next, at least from Verizon.

I think that depends on what one's particular idea of improvement is.

In my case, for example, the Samsung Prime's rumored Super Amoled HD 720p, 4.5" screen would be a HUGE quantum leap from the Bionic's perhaps-pixelated-and-crappy quarter HD screen.

I don't really care about the extra 0.5 GHz in processor speed.

Your peepers are better than mine, even with my glasses on, probably. ;)

For example, I keep reading about my Droid 3's screen being inferior to Super Amoled, but I just came off a Fascinate and once I had my screen settings all done on my new phone I noticed no difference.

So, if it's about a screen that's better, well, that is not relevant to me, although I do like the increases in size we've been seeing, to a point; I have a Galaxy Tab for use when I want a nice big screen.

How much bigger should a Cell Phone screen be though? I mean, their already getting huge ... if people always want bigger screen we're soon gonna be carrying phones the size of a tablet on our hips.
