Hurricane Irene

I am going to be receiving a lot of rain and wind come Sunday. Current forecast through The Weather Channel is heavy rain with winds at 50mph. Thankfully, I don't live in Battery Park City.

I have plenty of bottles of diet iced tea (thank you Costco) but don't have a flashlight or batteries. I think I'll go get one tomorrow. I need to buy food but won't until Monday in the case of a power outage. I made the mistake before of buying a whole lot of food before an ice storm hit Indiana and power (including heat) was knocked out for days.

Note: I merged the two threads and decided to put it in The Lounge.

Long Island here, everybody ready for this?

My ark is almost done :p

You're going to be hardest hit in terms of NYC area from what I understand. Eastern Queens and LI have the greatest threat of being hit directly with everything west is just off to the side.

I hope you have 2 of every animal already because getting them all inside will take some time! You better find yourself a willing female to help repopulate the earth as well. :p

Best advice I can give (I live in FL and have been through a few hurricanes)...

PREPARE NOW. Don't wait until the last minute and expect food/water/etc to still be there and waiting. Have cash (no larger than $20 bills) to purchase any last minute/after the fact items when there isn't any power....

Almost everything is sold out at nearby stores, hoping to go to Costco and get everything before the flood of people. Was thinking of a generator too but its like $800

162qt marine cooler is filled with ice and beer. food supplies bought. i'll start putting stuff in the yard away tomorrow. generator ready to cut over to house breaker panel, 20 gal of gas on hand. just finished doing yearly maintainance on my chainsaw this past weekend.

now if i can only keep the gf calm, we should be able to ride this out nicely.

been through a couple of these hurricanes that ended up around this way. keeping the streets clear for emergency vehicle access to our neighborhood is my main concern.

This is soo typical. I haven't had a day off since I can't remember, and by some luck I'm actually off from all my jobs this weekend. So, of course, we're going to have a hurricane. Typical.

I'm in Myrtle Beach, SC. Been through a few of these, can't really say I'm worried. But hey, never know.

Dude, tell me about it. I think you said you were out east by Stony Brook or something like that. I'm in Nassau County, and I went to all the local Home Depot's, Walmart's, and a Lowe's - STORES DEPLETED!

I was like.. holy poop - weeeeeeeeeeee're f**ked!

^ for some reason, I always figured you were north of NYC

Brace yourselves gentlemen because its going to get windy! I think it'll be a tropical storm in Manhattan but LI will be a category 1. My brother is going to be bracing tonight and tomorrow because its hitting him in NC. He lives by the coast and its supposed to be a category 2 for him from what I've last seen. If he's not on emergency call at the animal hospital, then he's going to take his dog and cat up to a high school friend's place in Virginia.

Nope, I used to live in Manhattan. Decided to move out to the burbs on Long Island about 2 years ago now.

I have gallons upon gallons of iced tea, nonperishable food, flashlight and batteries, Nook fully charged, and... that's it. I'm ready in the case of a power outage!

Based on what I've seen of Trader Joe's in the UWS... Manhattanites aren't feeling the whole threat thing (other than perhaps the residents of Battery Park City). I was seeing a lot of people buy milk, eggs, frozen food, and so forth. I'm just being safe to do my big grocery shopping day until Monday so I don't waste money.

Apparently, Mayor Bloomberg is shutting down the MTA sometime Saturday afternoon until sometime Monday. I guess that's why Trader Joe's was so packed at this hour.

NJ here. Concerned. Just got a note on the door from the Red Cross.

I just got home from VA Beach, they're expecting to get hit hard. We saw preparations yesterday and this morning, boarding up window, reinforcing stuff, etc. Hope anyone in the path stays safe.

Im in Manhattan. Im ready but not sure how serious it will get. Hoping just for some hard rain and winds. Got a bottle of Vodka handy. :p

thanks, guys. Where I am in NJ, they are saying that it is almost sure to be a tropical storm. Our last tropical storm (floyd) created massive damage/flooding and some loss of life. Hoping for the best, though.

Governer Christie said that if you insist on staying home in the evacuated areas, at least tell the police so they can identify your remains. Gotta love that guy's style.

Central Virginia here, and not worried about it. I may volunteer after the flooding to help people, though. I'm not working, it's the least I can do.

All I really care about is not losing power. I need to finish my TV marathon and I will be quite unhappy if Irene interrupts it. I'm going to run out and throw things at it if the power goes out!

When I came home from work tonight, I was met with a text from my g/f showing our Bradford Pear tree broken and on the ground. That was taken earlier today. Storm's really supposed to really begin until 2am here.

Watching the storm strike @ Virginia Beach and NC. Our family's ready for it here in NJ. I'm watching The Weather Channel and seeing cars drive by the reporter. I'm wondering if this storm is not really that bad and the media is trying to sensationalize it or if those people who are out driving in it are really foolhardy.

I've been through a more hurricanes than I can remember. Some worse than others. And honestly this one doesn't seem THAT bad. But I really don't know. It's the flooding that's the problem, and it's been sunny here in Florida for 3 days straight with mild showers. Bullet dogded!
