Rogers 911/Sense UI Update: Post your problems here

I think you answered your question in the last sentence :) That is exactly what it is all about.
oh yeah, I'm sure this is what the reasoning is and what gives me a bad taste in my mouth about the industry as a whole. This might be how they miss the little things such as a 911 bug.
However I still won't pay for VM as long as forwarding is broken as it's been for years. What I do is to give out my VoIP(s) number which will ring any of my VoIP phones as well as ring my cell number. Problem solved and I use my own VM. When I decide to drop Rogers I still have my VoIP number and will config to a new cell number if I even get one. A data only plan is getting closer to being the only service I need from cell companies. I went a long time without cell and I'll do it again if they continue down this path.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. So possible bug: call forwarding doesn't work fully (but never did).

i thought google voice doesn't allow forwarding to canadian numbers? or are you receiving the call thru voip on your cell?

I'm not using google voice, can't because of our 3rd world status here. :(
I'm using a standards based VoIP and my own PBX. Does everything that google voice does and probably more. Been using it for years and is still my primary number that happens to also ring my cell.

Got my replacement Dream today, that appeared to came with the 911 Fix pre-installed. Battery life is a little better it seems, but it still keeps dropping my 3g connection, and requires me to pull the battery everytime i want to get online when im away from a wifi connection.

Brand new Magic, already with the latest firmware. Setup with gmail etc, works fine. Voice and data confirmed. But nothing will download from the Market. Anything I select stays forever at "Starting download".
I want my 1.6 back.....

Folks listen to this. I am the geek in my group, so my friend who's updated her Dream called me today and her phone was simply not working. In other words bricked. She's had the phone for a few months with no problems other than a locked ROM (which she thought was fine). I told her to do a few things to check if the thing was just a small bug, but I can assure you, her phone is not working at all. I don't know if the hardware still works either. I haven't laid my hand on the phone, but I'll tell you all if I get a chance to see it myself.

As well, can you do us a favor? Record the call you make to Rogers if you need to get a replacement for her. I would really enjoy hearing whether or not they will back you, or say it's your own fault.

She said she's gonna go to a store. She lives a little bit far from from me now, so I can't assure you I'll be able to see her soon, but you will know how this ends up.

Thank you. As I have stated before, I have been unable to get a concrete answer as to whether we are doing this fix at our own risk. If we are, then it is a violation of the Terms Of Service. It's like telling a person who owns a Toyota Corolla that they need to install the accelerator fix by themselves, and if they break the accelerator during the fix, they will pay to repair the damage.

I love real world analogies!

I work at a Rogers Plus; don't go to the store. We can't help you. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to, but we can't do anything... we're not even allowed to do updates for people who don't have computers... thanks again HTC.

The update is obviously covered by warranty.

lol yup. BTW that's an epic FAIL too. I've always liked GM more though so this kinda levels my mood :)

She will only show them what happened to the phone. You guys should be able to help with that. Thanks for your feelings. I appreciate it. It's guys like you that I like in Rogers.

I can't tell if you're being facetious or not, so I'll just reiterate: tell her not to waste her time going to the store, we seriously can't do anything, her phone could be on fire and it wouldn't make a difference.

No one at the store can get her a replacement. It's all over the phone, tell her to grab a beer and chill in a lazyboy while she waits on speakerphone :P

Well if it were me, I would know nobody can help me more than customer care in this situation. She just likes to have a "person" in front of her. I did tell her it's better to call though. So this time, like always, the beer is mine :D:p She'll be waiting in line for 30 minutes getting red-mad, me havin' a beer reading some good posts.

Just call and if you keep calm all is well. Worse case is that level 2 calls you back at at time you give them and after going through a few steps they will pass you to the returns people and you'll have a new phone.

So instead of predicting what may or may not happen think positive and all is fixed if it isn't your fault. I dislike the industry more than anyone but when I need something done once every 10 years I get it done. My phone bricked as well during the update and two days later a brand new one was delivered and all is working again.

git 'er done.

:D Thanks for your optimistic experience. I'll forward it to my friend. That should get her into a better mood.

Can anyone confirm that after the update the incoming calls do work on bluetooth.
On mine if a place a call the bluetooth connects.
If I receive a call I hear the phone ring through headset, but as soon as I answer the bluetooth disconnects and must put phone on my ear.
tried this with two different headsets.
Rogers will send me new magic but are on back order.
Don't want to wait a few weeks just to find out it will do same thing.
TIA

Got a magic here and have updated some time back.

- Can confirm that MS Exchange is working fine
- Can also confirm that I've had a few reboots unexpectedly while navigating the main menu (Sense UI). Once while trying to flip photos on the HTC photo album widget, and the other when flipping from the main page over to the first page to the left

Now a new issue I've not yet seen mentionned:

My GPS is messed up and not able to get a proper possition...

I've left the unit on for a few hours now and have also taken it outside a few times to give it a clear view of the sky but at best I've been able to get 3 satellites and a location that puts me out in the Atlantic Ocean! ;-)

I've got an old Garmin GPS which has been able to get a location just fine. Weird thing is I've noticed that the Magic is tracking satellites that are not visible to the Garmin.

I have a feeling the GPS engine is remembering a previous location that is bad and it's stuck trying to resolve a new location based on this garbage location.

Physical location is 74 deg W, 45 deg N
GPS is reporting 58 deg W, 38 deg N

GPS was working a few days ago, but now is not. Have not travelled more than an 30 minutes from my house in the last few days.

I've rebooted and even pulled the battery and still in the same situation. I've tried all combinations of enabled and disabled network location and gps locations. I've tried multiple apps (Google Maps, GPS Test, GPS Status, etc) I've also tried disabling wifi and work of the network data. Switched wifi back on after. Still no dice.

Note that google maps is able to use the network location. Would think that it could feed that to the GPS engine to at least give it an approximate location to speed up the fix... It's locating me in the next town over (about 5km) so not too bad. Better than the GPS anyways.

I've seen this reported in other forums so not sure it's specificaly related to this update (especially since no one else has reported yet). Some report that a reboot fixes things, but that's not working for me unfortunately.

The only other solution that's been found to work was to do a RESET of the device! That's going to be my next move here as nothing else seems to work unless someone else has any ideas?

Dream user here, w/911 update. Installing the update was a nasty problem to begin with (linux, mac and win7x64 machines), but after 3 days of no data, I figured out how to do it. Rogers tech support promised to send me an email with the SD install instructions, but they never did.

Anyway, I'm also having problems with the update. Here's what I've noticed so far (these are all sporadic and follow no obvious pattern):

  • Data drops out, but wifi still works
  • SMS sending fails
  • SMS receiving fails (sometimes happens at the same time as sending fails)
  • Voice drops out completely, ie: no outgoing or incoming
  • For 2 days, people who called me weren't even getting my voicemail, just dead air
I found out about the voice problems after a week of my parents trying to call me to tell me about my grandpa's chemo therapy. I also lost out on a job interview because I didn't know I was having voice problems for a WHOLE FREAKING WEEK. For most of that time, SMS and data were working fine, so I didn't suspect anything was wrong (I rarely use the 'phone' aspect of this thing anyway, so going a week without calls isn't out of the ordinary).

Everything was working fine last night, checked when I woke up and everything was messed up again.

have the above bolded part.
plus screen freezing occasionally,
delayed reaction to a command whether it be by touch or pressing the button

thats about all i have seen so far

For the record again, here is the current list of reported issues.

REMEBER: Most of the problems seem to be because of Sense UI on the Magic, so it is likely you won't be experiencing most/any of these problems if you have a Dream.

PLEASE look at this list and help us by confirming if you have encountered any of the following, or found a fix. Thanks!

- VoiceDialer is GONE (you will need to DL a 3rd party app)
- Bluetooth activation of Voice Dialer (even using 3rd party) MIGHT not be working. We need to confirm.
- Fido Roaming: Fido customers report their phones now constantly say they are roaming (data I believe)
- Force close: Some people report various FCs and spontaneous reboots
- Photo gallery (some users report only photos in the 100MEDIA folder show in gallery, unlike in previous version which only required photos to be in any sub-folder of the DCIM folder) Can we please confirm?
- Possible problem with MS Exchange - Can we confirm please?
- Freezing, etc: Twitter user XBrav is having problems with freezing, buzzing, and calls not completing.
- Battery issues: possibly draining faster for some users.
- App availability: Some apps previously available in the marketplace are now not available. This appears to be an issue with Google needing to "approve" the Rogers/HTC update for the marketplace.
- Call forwarding: Some users report inability to get calls to forward properly. Has been reported to tech support.
- French Keyboard: User Valliant reports that his keyboard switched from QWERTY in "portrait" orientation to "AZERTY" (Euro keyboard) in "Landscape" mode. This has been confirmed! Landscape keyboard appears to be QWERTY, but actually acts as AZERTY. Only on Magic, and with language set to French.
- Weather: Some users report inability to delete or add cities in the weather widget. Is this a setting issue? Can anyone please confirm?
- Brightness: Users report inability to change screen brightness using widgets. Can only be changed from Settings screen.
- Brightness Cont: GBD reports: "The first time that I used quick settings app to adjust brightness my screen went completely black and i had to shine a light on it to get the brightness back up. Now tonight I was playing with the screens and the same thing happened. It was repeatable but not every time switching, only maybe 25% of the time." Can we please have someone else try to confirm?

NOTE: The task manager "Kill All" issue has a fix. You must add htc sense and com.htc.provider to the ignore list.

QUESTION: Can people who have updated please report the difference in available RAM & ROM space on your Dreams and Magics now compared to previously? I have seen some reports that there is now a lot less space on the internal memory for installing apps.

QUESTION 2: Can anyone please confirm whether or not Microsoft Exchange is working properly?

Voice Dialer:
RogersMary and HTC confirm native Voice Dialer will be returned in Android 2.1 for Magic. Status of BT activation of Voice Dialer still needs to be confirmed.

Bricking: Some users report their phones are "bricked" or otherwise inoperable after completing the Rogers Update. Can we please confirm?

I don't know if this was present before the 911 update, but on my magic and I have seen some other posts as well, that when waking up your screen while connected to WiFi you see the 3G or H symbol in the notification bar. It is because your WiFi went to sleep and disconnected.

Here is the solution:
You need to change the settings for your WiFi in the phone. Since the update the default is that the WiFi will disconnect when the screen goes off.

Do the following from the home screen: Press Menu\Settings\Wireless controls\Wi-Fi settings\Press the Menu Key again\Advanced\Wi-Fi sleep policy.
Once there you can choose between three options.
I have mine set to "never".
There is an app that will place a widget on your screen and you can toggle between "never" and "default". It is called "WiFi Lock". This is not the same toggle widget that turns your WiFi on or off and does not do the same thing.

This is a power saving feature. WiFI will wake up as soon as there is data. The cell data might accept a few inbound packets for things like gmail but that will wake up WiFI for the rest. It is just a few packets and won't eat your data plan much. The only time you might want WiFI on all the time is if you don't have a data plan.
And yes it did this before the update.

Yet if I want to be on MSN using the app "Hi-MSN" while in the house so I don't have to keep checking my computer, once the screen sleeps I get logged out of MSN because I disconnect even though it goes to 3G. With the sleep policy set to never I don't get signed out unless I actually sign out. So it seem some apps require it to be set to "Never"
